I guess I didn't pay enough attention (edited it now).

Hmm, now if maybe we could attach some faces to the names as well?

kajjj 07-02-2006 08:13 PM

I'm already working on adding my photo...

Puffin 07-02-2006 08:18 PM

Seb, mine is Freyja, not Freya ;)

Stebbi is Stefn, Gorkur is Bragi.
And I guess Sean is Sean?

Go ahead add me.

Well I remembered Bragi from the Lemon 64 forum (that's where I got the idea for the real names).

I guess Sean is Magic's real name (that's why he changed it), will wait a bit before adding it.

Don Andy 07-02-2006 08:27 PM

Well, my name is pretty much the same as my nick: Andy, which is short for Andreas.

So: Andreas.

You want a photo with that, too? ^_^

True. But still many gave their real names- so it's a source of information, if nothing else. So I won't tell you my name again- it is unfitting for the 'ruler of the world' to repeat himself :D

I, like Tom, am called ... Tom, if anyone's interested (not quite the great sorcerer Tim, but fairly close :))

rlbell 07-02-2006 11:44 PM

According to my baptismal certificate, my name is Richard. Not that this surprises me, but my brother, whom everyone called Tom, was shocked to discover, when he looked at his birth certificate to apply for his drivers' license, that his first name was Bruce.

It amused me to learn that Richard is an old english word for tyrant, or harsh ruler.

More likely, it means brave/hard leader with reference to strength rather than brutality and it's Germanic, not English.

My name is Andrew. I won't add a picture because I don't have any!

Kon-Tiki 08-02-2006 02:01 AM

Don't EVER call me Raphael. I hate it when people do that. My name's Raf. Officially. It's even in my underpa... ahh, no. Got no name in there. Anyways, I don't like being called Raphael. Either use Raf, Kon, Tiki, Kon-Tiki, Rafbo, Straffe or a new nickname, but not Raphael. I don't respond to that one, anyways.

No, its old english. It may have a common root with a similar german word, but it is english.

English is like that. A friend of mine, James Nichols (not famous, but you might have heard of him), once commented:

People who go on about the purity of the english language amuse me. English has the purity of a cribhouse lady. It does not just borrow words, it lures weaker languages into back alleys, and then rolls them for any spare words in their pockets.

From Wikipedia:

Sine qua non or conditio sine qua non was originally a Latin legal term for "without which it could not be" ("but for"). It refers to an indispensable and essential action, condition, or ingredient. In recent times it has passed from a merely legal usage to a more general usage in many languages, including English, French, Italian, etc.

It amused me to learn that Richard is an old english word for tyrant, or harsh ruler.

More likely, it means brave/hard leader with reference to strength rather than brutality and it's Germanic, not English.

My name is Andrew. I won't add a picture because I don't have any!

[/b][/quote]
According to the two sources I've listed below (which admittedly may not be completely accurate, but I couldn't be bothered to dig any deeper!) the name is made up from the germanic elements 'ric' (meaning power, rule, leader, braveheart) and 'hard' (meaning brave, hardy, strong) and was introduced to the english language by norman settlers from europe. This would imply that the name was in use elsewhere prior to it's use in England.

http://www.behindthename.com/php/view.php?name=richard and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard.

There are plenty of names ending in '-ric' well before the conquest, though, and the word 'hard' (or something very similar-looking - I can't be bothered to check my OE-dictionary right now) is definitely pre-Norman. So the name's roots are most likely Anglo-Saxon, even if the actual name isn't. And since Anglo-Saxon is largely a Germanic language, that would mean you're both right.

Most of the communities are inhabited and contaminated by my fellow-age 'friends', but come'on, these communities really stink.

Define "lots" and "old", please.

While I will not suggest that we poll for people's ages, there are lots of young people here, with a sprinkling of people who are entering middle age. Although I am nearing the age of 39, I do not consider myself old, as it is never too late to have a happy childhood. From the photos presented, I would be surprised if more than ten percent of active posters to the fora are above twenty-five. I am bad at guessing ages, but most of the photos seem to be people in between sixteen and twenty.

Say Punch... Is that O RLY some version of Oh Really? OR is there any other meaning to it?

I'm asking because in Slavic (not Germanic) languages OREL/ORAO means an EAGLE, so ORLI (pronounced as ORLY) would be the plural - more eagles... And that is an eagle isn't it?

Havell 10-02-2006 04:50 PM

It means "Oh Really?" And I think that's an owl.

Anyway, I'm using Mozilla 1.7.12 and I have no problems seeing these pictures... port 1028 ???? why that? It's a port for remote access ... and 127.0.0.1 ist "local host" which means you are talking to yourself - somehow.

where are u using the internet? somehow remote? is java activated? maybe you surf in a very secure network environment ...

I use it from the UK, standard security, I think Java might be the problem, when I open the script console it shows me the string of errors, I'll try to do something about that

Hehe. I'l try and fool around with something too, desktops are fun...

And if Swiss is too busy I can do it.

In case it's not too late, my real name is Javier, and I seem to be the only Spaniard around here.

The initial 'J' should NOT be pronounced like in Joe, rather like the greek letter "chi" for instance. But if it's hard for you just use the Old Spanish version instead, Xavier which would be pronounced "Shavier". :ok: In any case, the accent should be placed on the last syllabe.

So if I add a photo of mine to my profile, would I get a chance to show on that poster? :D Or have I understood wrongly? I don't have any photo of mine in digital format but I'd manage to make one if necessary... (Wait, maybe I do have some digital photos, I'll check out my CD pile... But respond anyway pretty please.)

Do I see a Wollongong girl Miss Aeryn? Tell me that my eyes don't decieve me :)

Starflower 26-01-2007 12:56 AM

Close, but not quite. I live in Albion Park. :)

Lulu_Jane 26-01-2007 06:33 AM

I know Albion Park! Wow, small world - I grew up in Wollongong (moved around a couple of different suburbs.)

Anyways, the reason I ask is because I think I recognise you and your name ('though not the spelling of course ;)) I think that you might have gone to school at some point with my younger sister... Did you ever go to a montessori school by any chance?

A small world indeed :)

No, never went to a Montessori school - I'd have loved to, but my mother quashed the idea by saying I'd never get anything done XD I went to the Christian school here in town. That's seven wasted years I'll never get back...

Lulu_Jane 27-01-2007 02:50 AM

Heh, yep I know the pain :)

Hmmm, I gues that's not it then, but if it ever dawns on me I'll let you know!

Hadil - Same name as "the father" of Linux. (Linus.)

Full name: Linus van de Laarschot, born in the Netherlands, Eindhoven. Currently living in Eindhoven.
Age 21.

In case you want to know what Hadil is based upon, take Hades (god of greek mythological underground/hell) and Gabril (angel of wrath) Combine, add salt, wait 6 hours, done! This due to the way i look at things in life (good/evil) and when i say things i mean ALL things...

(hope i'm not INFlooding.... whahaaaa :))

Is this... thing still going on?

If so, my real name is Eduardo.
Now, to explain my user name, I'm afraid I can't! Especially since it has no real meaning.

And to wonder, I've been using it for ten years or so...

Anyway.

Glad to join this forum.

The 49th most common male name in the US

Sebatianos 26-11-2007 05:05 AM

Can somebody please remove this as a sticky.

I'm thinking we should open up a new topic like this instead (some names might have changed, and some members weren't really active and might not even come back here to the site), to be more up to date.
