Is they're engine free?

Course then again I would need something to make the 3D graphics, the animations (hopefully could be done with the same program) and then learn to code

I wonder, are Java Scripters free? Cause me and my friends are planning on learning Java Script, we just need to find tutorial and programs and crap.

I've also thought about making a Text-Based MUD (So has SixApes, wherever he got to) About a meteorite hitting the earth, and for the first 10 game days or so (IRL Days compared to Game Days will be like 1:5 or 1:7) and then like on the 7th day, someone spots a MeTeOr headed for earth!

Boom. Then it becomes an epic quest for SURVIVAL :D And so on.

If mods and/or total conversions are counted, then Dungeon Siege offers a nice modding opportunity. Lazarus (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ultima_V:_Lazarus) is an example of a game made with Dungeon Siege engine. It is a remake of Ultima V.

There are also a few open source RPG engines out there, but their names escape me for the moment.

Okay, I started making a Magnum PI game :). I'll make it a rather easy adventure game - maybe I'll expand on the idea but I think I should start small.
