Boats can make you piles of cash if you know how to use them as they can carry lots and they don't require roads or tracks to run on.

Fell free to prove me wrong, but I don't think boats can even be profitable at the beginning... ;)
Even if they were, it would really be a lot of trouble for not much rewards, and you would completely allow the competition to let loose on land by the very beginning and then it's hard to grab land back... |
I use Boats only for goog looking. They produce very less money. The only Alternative would be a Chain System between Oil Tanker and Train. Otherwise Boats are very useless.

At the beginning they're of course not profitable, they'll just ruin you. But if you have 4-5 trains driving on a good, profitable route, they'll bring you the money. Then you can try the boots, and with good planning and enough distance between the stations you'll get good money. ;)

I played the "Scotland" map and I had four oil tankers making ?25,000 per year by taking oil from the offshore rigs to the mainland. I do agree though, trains are the best but don't discount boats as a way of making money.

I never said boats were not profitable, I said boats were not profitable by the beginning of the game... ;)
Boats is very profitable as soon as oil rigs appear on the map. But it take age, and you have plenty of time to build a railroad and even a plane empire before they boot. |
Boats???
What is this thing... Boat... strange word.... |
Boats are those kind of things which are open up in the middle, float on water and is usually used to transport something or someone across a large mass of water... ;)
But I guess I should have used "ship" instead. :D |
Ships?
