Not too sure what the problem is, but I can offer a few suggestion. The first thing I would try is to open the file with a different program such as 7zip or Izarc. If that doesn’t work, try redownloading the file. Remember, all the file parts have to be in the sam directory in order for you program to unarchive it successfully. I’m afraid I can’t offer any more advise as I never really used winrar before. Hope this helps.

Thanks B-Wolf, opening it with 7-zip did it. I had tried to open it with winzip before but without luck. I got a little confused because of the lack of an extension.

I managed to install the game with DOSBox but I had the same problem B-Wolf had, I get a message when I'm about to start playing (after I click on Instant Action or the others) that the CD is not found/mounted. Also, I believe there are no audio tracks associated to the IMG file?

I tried burning and ripping but it didn't work.

.Cue File Needed?

To play the game in Dosbox, you have to use the “imgmount” command to mount the cd image. Also, I read somewhere on the internet, that Mechwarrior 2 mercenaries has a strange copy protection that it looks for the first audio track on the CD-ROM. That’s what I read at least, I don’t know if it’s true or not. If the administrators will let me, I’ll post a cue file to go along with the image file.

I do have it properly mounted, it's the game who fails to recognize it. I mounted the img and installed the game from within dosbox prior to playing. I never have problems with these kind of things, but the three mechwarrior games are giving me an unprecedented headache.

my autoexec from the conf file:

mount C "F:\ARCHIV~1\D-FEND~1\VIRTUA~1\"
imgmount D "F:\ARCHIV~1\D-FEND~1\VIRTUA~1\DOSBOX\MECHWR2M\MW2Mercs.img" -t iso -fs iso
C:
cd\
cd \DOSBOX\MECHWR2M
MERCS.EXE
exit

I did a little research, and from my understanding, the game crashes whenever it tries to play an audio track from the CD. The image file on Abandonia here does have the data for the audio tracks, but as you said earlier, there isn’t a supporting .cue or .ccd file to designate those audio tracks.

There are two solutions that I have tried that have actually worked in preventing the game from crashing. The first solution is to use a no-cd patch for the game. Don’t know why it exactly works, but I tried it and it does. The second solution is to somehow recreate the audio tracks on the disk. I am attaching a .cue file to this post that will be able to create the missing audio tracks for this game. For some reason, you can not use the .cue file I’m providing to mount the image file in a virtual CD drive. Instead, you have to first burn a CD using the .cue file along with the .img file. Then, you have to make a image file of the cd you just burned. I use Imgburn to burn the disc and Alcohol 52% FE to create the image file of the disc. After that, you should be able to mount the new image file in Dosbox and play the game successfully. I hope this helps you and anyone else having trouble with this game.

B-Wolf, excellent! Now the game is fully playable. If you want to mount the image directly from the cuesheet, you just need to edit the .cue with notepad or something similar and change the first line to pinpoint the .img you have.

Example:
change

FILE "MERCENARIES.IMG" BINARY

to

FILE "MW2Mercs.IMG" BINARY

Thanks a lot!

Glad it work. I’ll edit the first line of the .cue file later so it goes along with the MW2Mercs.img posted here. :max:
