...but since I had Windows 98 before XP, I didn't even do anything with those files. I only knew of Autoexec.bat, and used it to initialize my DOS mouse driver. That was all.

if your computer can handle it, use some kind of virtualisation prgram to simulate windows 98 on your computer (VMWare/MS Virtual PC 2004/Bochs)
thats what i do.

I managed to run Interstate in windows 98 in a virtual PC with MS Virtual PC, but it freezes in the salvage area... :(

I recommend losing the Windows and plumping for Linux/BSD. Windows XP is a pig. You can run Dosbox very comfortably on Linux. It's no problem at all. :ok:
