I'm sorry man, but I can't find anything wrong in your config. I'm at a loss about what to do. Does someone else have any ideas?

One thing, though. When you type "mem" in dosbox, how much conventional memory does it report?

Hi, just made an account

mem gives me;

637 Kb free conventional memory
15296 Kb free extended memory
15296 Kb free expanded memory

Flop 11-04-2005 08:31 PM

637 KB is more than enough to run the game, so the problem must be something else. First of all you should ditch version 0.58 and stick with 0.63. What are your system specifications and what operating system do you use? Have you tried running the install.exe file and setting up the sound? The setup should match that of your DOSbox config.

yep tried the install/setup made the IRQ/DMA/IO the same as dosbox, also tried to turn off audio but this gives the same error

I can't get this game to work. Something with my EMS memory driver? It tells what commands to put in my System.cfg ... DOS=HIGH, UMB, Device=C\WINDOWS\Himen.sys, Device=C\WINDOWS\EMM386.exe RAM

So basically I'm worried about screwing something up.. do I just replace 'NOEMS' with RAM or do I remove the /Testmem:off /M:1 part from the Device=C\WINDOWS\Himen.sys part as well?

@barracuda_1: I'm really sorry, but I can't figure out what's wrong. I've spent a fair bit of time browsing the web for a solution, and I did find several other people with the exact same problem, but no solution. Sorry.

@XCOM_Squaddie: You need to be a little bit more specific. How are you running the game? In windows? Dos? Dosbox? And what error message do you get, excactly? Also, I'm fairly sure that the file you're talking about is called config.sys and not System.cfg. And no, you shouldn't change anything in that file before making a backup (unles you know what you're doing).

XCOM_Squaddie 12-04-2005 12:49 AM

Err, yeah that's what I meant config.sys .. sorry I'm a bit frustrated. I'm using DOS under Windows 98 and it just says "No EMS driver found.. and then tells me to change NOEMS to RAM, and I got DOS box too because some games that I have trouble with actually work with that program but this just says the same thing on that too.

Oh and I tried doing what it says and still get nothing. Got the same problem with Wing Commander: Privateer as well

You're gonna have problems running this game in windows, since it requires both ems and a lot of conventional memory (and DPMI, I suspect). Your best bet is DOSbox. In DOSbox' config there's a line that starts with "EMS=". If it says false, change it to true. And try typing "mem" in DOSbox, and let me know what it says.

Feel free to PM me about this, so we don't clutter up this thread too much.

Kudos to the person who put this game up... I was completely obsessed with it when I bought the originals (although my attention was taken away by Quest for Glory 2 before I could finish it) and I'm so glad to find it again.

For what it's worth, it works just fine on my machine... I use dosbox 0.63, gotten straight from this site, default install with no config changes, and I been wandering around the first floor with no lockups or anything.
