The reason their eyes are so wide is because one of them is infected with the Thing, and they don't know who to trust.
Once a certain one of them because a fleshly blob of flailing, absorbing, flesh-colored, tentacles and spewing liquid with organs and body parts growing out of all it's sides, I doubt they'll be so adorable.
