crwydryny I used to play this all the time great for killing time when bored. my best battle was me in a lone tug against as many orion craft as could be deployed. I actually ended with a score in the thousands.
though it was a pyrrhic victory caused by me detonating my self destruct and takeing out all but about 3-4 enemy craft.
it was worth it for the look on my friend's face after setting up the battle my friend was "there see if you can win that one"
I took one look and was "humm... no problem"
friend: no shields, no weapons, no support just you
me: I can do this
*30 secconds later*
friend: what the f**k!!! you....
me: I killed more of them than they did of me
friend: but...
me: look at the score

dracolisc yes i am using the newest version of dosbox .. when i load it c/dos/begin2/begin2.. i get the the first part of the manual .. the copyright .. donation and address info .. after that nothing.. tried just clicking on the exe but got the error "doesnt support full screen" .. [ that told me it needed dosbox ]

_r.u.s.s. there is only one exe file, and it runs pretty well

if you read description of the files in the original guide it says that all the other files are only text files with manual, new features for this version, adverts and a file that contains all of it packed. so the game itself is only one exe file

do you use dosbox to run it?

edit: nvm, horseman typed this along with me

The Fifth Horseman Five files. Begin.arc is an archive that contained the others.
Whats.new is a changelog, BeginAd.txt and BeginAd2.txt are BBS text ads - all three are superfluous to the game's operation.
That leaves Begin.man... which is the manual and exactly the same thing that you downloaded labeled as the "guide" (I changed the name to proper one now).

Obviously, neither of these could have had any effect on the game's operation.

Are you running it in DOSBox?

No, I think I have it understand it now.

Thanks for your help runescope. The text command is exactly what I needed.

Hehe, 1 dreadnought vs. 8 eh? I will have to try that just to see how much I get stomped. Definately doesn't sound like a good tutorial battle.

It's been a decade or so since I played it, but the trick is to run away while zigzagging, but not running away fast enough for them to give up the chase. That way, they're running into your torpedoes, while you are running away from theirs (and can dodge them).

I used to play this game all the time. I got so good that I could send one StarFleet Dreadnaught up against 8 Klingon Dreadnaughts ans survive with little or even somtimes (very rarely) no damage. k:

Oh, and to se the rest of the text on the screen, type in "text", and for most of the commands you don't ahve to type in the full command, just using the first three letters is usually enough. like when you're targeting a particular ship.

I think i remember using the same glitch, perhaps using a negative warp beyond the posted limits... i remember the original, dont know if they fixed it in this version. but you could evade a ship at warp -100 and its effectively pursuing them at warp 100, no heat to engines.. used effectively, could warp in, fire phasers, and be far out of their reach, while charging phasers, go in and swoop again... i didnt see mention of the little weapons called probes, i used them extensively while warping in and out since they delivered lots of damage and could be prematurely detonated with a wide beam phaser... oh yea... i sent like the smallest federation ship against 8 klingon dreadnaughts, would come out battle scars, but came out alive
