Thank you, again. =)
I am shocked nobody addressed this:

1. Open the folder containing all the game files.
2. Right-click on crime.sav
3. Left-click on properties
4. At the bottom where it says attributes, remove the check from "read-only"

Ridiculous....

Tommyboy Hi,

with the help of mobygames I've found out about a German version of the game.

The big question follows immediately

Does anyone of you perhaps have the german version of "Crime City" and could share it with me?

Thanks.

Thanks!

Then I played this game the first time, I thought all those questions would get answered and that I had many more hours of game time.

It was a huge anticlimax then I went to the police with the gun, and suddenly the game was completed.

Another thing that irritates me about Crime city is all the choices you can make, that don’t change anything.

One of those things is your skills. Lock picking and surveillance is needed during the game. But no matter if your skills are 1 or 9, your changes of success seems to be the same. As a matter of fact it’s not even relevant if you do fail. Just try to pick the lock again.

Also it doesn't make any difference if you follow someone for 2 hours or 4 or 6 or 8. So why even give the player the choice?

You can also improve your first aid, fighting and crime rate. But there is absolutely no place in the game where you can even use those skills.

Also your intelligence, charm, energy, moral etc is changing during the game. Firstly, they seem to change randomly without any connection to what you are doing. Secondly, this makes absolutely no difference.

The game is full of things like this. You can break up with your girlfriend, confess a murder, vandalize the church. And nothing of it will affect anything. Your moral doesn't change, not your intelligence. And the game won’t take a new dicertion.

If you break up with your girlfriend, you can just walk outside her house and then go back in. And everything will be just like before. You can make plans with her for a time at the pub, but she will not be there, and none of you will ever say anything about it.

Whenever you follow a person, he or she will always do the same thing. Phil always get a phone call and drive away in his car in big hast. Even then his dead, he keeps doing this if you decide to follow him around. If someone catches you following him or her, it has absolutely no effect. Just follow them again until they don't see you.

What's the point in giving the player a lot of options and ways to develop the character, if is has nothing to do with the game?

One other thing...

The game is really, really easy. Whenever you get stucked, you can just visit any of the 11 screens, and talk to everybody in them. Then dial all the numbers. If that doesn't give you a new path, just click "next day" and you will get a letter.

The only reason the game might take some time is because of silly things like how you find Gordon’s house. You must go back and look at a document that you have already looked at. Things like that can get you stucked, but not in a funny way like if there was a hard puzzle to solve. Just in a ridiculous, buggy kind of way.

Besides all that, the game really entertained me then I first played it as a kid. One reason is that it's very easy to control. After only five minutes you know exactly how to play.

Another reason is actually the limited numbers of screens. Since they are so few, you don't get bored of clicking at everything. For example, then I played Sherlock Holmes. There was a new place all the time. And after a while I wasn't excited then I found a new room to investigate. It felt more like a "job" to go through all the clicking and reading in every new place.

Crime city keeps up the excitement every time you find a new screen, and you are happy to search it through.

In Crime city you don't even have to chose "open" or "use" or "look" etc. The game does what’s needed with the object you click at. This also makes the clicking and reading part less boring.

Crime city also got a really nice graphic and sound. All the places are interesting to visit. The church, pub, police station etc. There's something in the atmosphere that got me hooked.

I have really god memories of this game, but it is one of those that didn't stand the time very well.
(Sorry for the spell and grammars. I’m from Sweden).

Beg for your life to the robber, and he will often feel pity and give you HIS money (100 dollar).

Then enter Jeff’s house again with the robber’s money and buy more skills.

Keep repeating this procedure.

Sometimes, the robber might actually rob you. But that doesn't matter, because you don't have anything to steal then you are leaving Jeff’s house. (The money is already spend on skills).

This takes half an hour of mouse-clicking.

Still, the very same officers aren’t even satisfied then you give then the murder weapon you found inside Phil’s house. Oh no... That’s not enough evidence against the convicted hitman... Henry is the murderer... he was the one who had an argument...

SPOILER:

For you folks who have problems at the police station.

The officer needs one, and ONLY one suspect. He also needs to see the murder-weapon and the computer disk.

Sometimes you have all this, but the officer still keeps saying that you can't have two or three suspects. This is a bug in the game, that for some reason doesn't remove the other suspects from the list. Even after you have found out that they are innocent.

To avoid this. Do not tell the officer that you can prove your fathers innocence during the game. Wait until you have all evidence above.

The game has a few glitches. For example, Patricia (your mother) tells you about David’s affair with an "unknown girl". But then you ask Dave at the pub about this, your question is: "Do you know anything about David’s affair with Debbie". (How are you supposed to know her name?)

SPOILER ABOUT THE STORY:

This game has some really huge gaps in the plot.

Henrys friend David was murdered because he had a photograph of Jason (who is working at Stancrow) and Bill (who is working at TechnoLogique).

The photograph shows Bill giving Jason a secret document that he had stolen from his own work.

Gordon (who owns Stancrow) had hired the hitman Phil to murder David and destroy the photograph.

Why is David having this photograph? And how does he know that he is about to die, and tells Henry about the safe-code?

And why did the hitman Phil got murdered after he murdered David. By who?

Gordon is then hiring another hitman (Nick) to murder Bill. Why? Why did Bill suddenly have to die? And why wasn't Gordon happy with the hitman Phil? Why did he have to murder him, and find another one, named Nick?

And why is Nick standing outside Bills room at the hospital for a whole day before he enters and murder the poor guy? Why do they send Bill to a hospital first, and THEN murder him?

As someone have already stated, there is also completely ridiculous how Henry could be arrested in the first place. There was no evidence against him at all, besides the fact that he and David had an argument.

Still, the very same officers aren’t even satisfied then you give then the murder weapon you found inside Phil’s house. Oh no... That’s not enough evidence against the convicted hitman... Henry is the murderer... he was the one who had an argument...

I have played this game to the point where I got the diskette, removed the virus from it, and presented it to the cops. However, they tell me I have three suspects.

Phil Wilkinson
George Evans
Simon Hews

For some reason, George isn't removed from the list even though the girlfriend of the detective in the game says his alibi checks out. Also, Simon isn't removed even though David's wife said he was at the church in a carrot suit at the time it happened. So it mainly leaves Phil, whom is dead, but I know it isn't him since it has to be Gordon Chambers but I can't link him to anything other than the fact that his name is on the piece of paper at Phils, and he has a key to the Stancrowe safe. The gun at Phils was found. I guess that's the murder weapon, but now I can't figure out how to proceed since. The walkthrough is no help since it says to look at the floppy disk, talk to Jeff about the weapon, which I did and found, and to present the evidence to the police. The final part says to talk to the girlfriend of the detective to get the last bit of evidence to clear up things. Yet, after that I still have those three people as suspects.

I got the VirusClean from the BBS owner even though the walkthrough fails to mention that you should do this in order to view the plans from the Techno Logique on the diskette.

I am running this game in DosBox. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

I actually BOUGHT this game in the early 90s - it was part of a 6-CD Value Pack that included Ultima I-VI on CD - I couldn't believe I could actually buy all 6 Ultimas for $20!!!! I installed Crime City and didn't get very far - it wasn't until I found the hints on the net that I was able to solve it.

The game was actually pretty good. I like games that you don't have to spend 10 years learning how to play before you play it, and this was a reasonably simple and immersive world. I liked the music actually - I felt it added to the experience.

Anyway, one of my major complaints, unless I'm missing something, is what was the connection between Gordon Chambers and David Walker? I figured out that Gordon hired Phil to kill David, and I guess the insinuation was that it was Gordon who stole the files from Techno Logique. I SUPPOSE we're to assume that David Walker was investigating the crime and was getting too close. But there were so many unanswered questions:

Who the bleep was Bill Warschlock?
Who were the two guys in the photo?
What were they doing?
Why was David Walker taking that picture?
How did Gordon Chambers know to frame Henry White for the murder?
What was the evidence against Henry White other than the argument? How could they even ARREST him, let alone CONVICT him, without a MURDER WEAPON?
Did they ever even SAY what exactly the date and time of the murder was? I guess you're to assume it was July 3rd (since the game starts July 4th) sometime after 6pm.
Bill Warshlock - just a name out of nowhere, he works for TechnoLogique and Gordon Chambers has Nick Hobson kill him. Following Nick led to Gordon Chambers's office.

Again, I guess the assumption is David was investigate the TechnoLogique theft and got too close so Gordon had someone take care of him, but I wish they'd connected the dots a bit better.

The "red herring" about the affair with Debbie was a little dumb too. HENRY pretended he had the affair, but Patricia (his wife) only knew about a rumor that DAVID was having the affair? I guess there's just the assumption that David had the affair because he was upset about the botched bank job.

All in all I think they could have done a better job with the story and still fit under the technology constraint they had.

I also hated the tedium of having to play the stock market every day (unless you knew the cheat), and how *(@#(*$@# long it can take to finally break into Stancrowe ---- TWICE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and how long it can take to break into Gordon Chambers's house.

Overall I'm glad I finished it but I can't say I'd actually recommend this game to anyone. There are better mystery games out there.
