Mousazz Now, I didn't play this game much, actually very little (the VUX rebellion), but what I liked is the game's approach. Sure, it sux compared to sc2, but by cutting out the story aspect and leaving only gameplay, It's almost good. Just a fix here and there, some debugging, maybe a change in ai behavior, more use out of colonies... But the developers had a good idea with the gameplay, they tried to make something different, and they did, just not good enough.

As for the story, sure, they messed up, I can't blame you, I mean, copying same old dialogues, cutting out a few races, completely changing a few races... But then again, who would want to make a game out of every bit of cash made from the last game? hmm...

In an overall summary, it had good expectations, but firing paulie and Freddie , and rushing the game had a lot of foreseen consequences

Very much so. Just like those who set up a shrine to Elvis in Nashville. They're right, and the rest of us are, well, an unenlightened minority.

Borodin The dialog writing for SC3 is far inferior to that of SC2. Nearly all the efforts at humor--and there are many--fall flat, in my opinion. Gameplay isn't as interesting, either. It's not a bad game, just a dull one.

Doink Starcon2 was such a great game i've never played 3 cause of all the bad reviews.

I might try it now and try not to compare it.

Vilo OK, I feel compelled to write a review that isn't "OMG LOLZ THIS GAME SUX COMPARED TO SC2 HAHAHA".

This game is good, it just has a different style than SC2. (You can easily see this because the old ships all had colors, but the new ships do not. The colored ships look awkward, since the feel of this game was meant for a realistic view).

The storyline is good. Hyperspace collapses, why not? You have an antagonistic, who is a conniving, manipulative $%&# (the Ploxis).

The story is written well, but the thing is, this game is simply almost a different genre from the predecessor, but not entirely. That's why people can't help but compare.

This game IS good.

On a side note, I know this game has speech files and videos, I dont have the Cd, anyone know where i can get those files?

dhaas I'm having an odd problem with the game: I can play melees just fine, but when I play the actual game, all battles are automatically controlled by the computer (which loses lots of ships because it sucks). Is there anywhere that I should be setting an option that I just don't know about? Someone help please.

While I understand that any sequel (and not just in computer games) that dumps something from previous parts and/or introduces something new can disappoint devoted series fan, but come on people! SC3 as standalone game deserves solid 4!

And by the way as somebody who started with SC3 back then and just recently tried to play SC2 I'd give SC3 more points than SC2.

Yeah, intra-starsystem navigation in SC2 is kinda cool as well as resource hunt... but just for the first hour. Then it becomes just plain boring. Another thing I didn't get in SC2 is why the hell HyperSpace has friction?!

So after several hours of resource hunt/random encounters/not much else happening I just gave up. Maybe later I'll give SC2 another try.

Oh, and to somebody in this thread: you can't say "it's rip off [of previous game in series]" and then judge the game as being part of series. It's either part of series and then there can't be any rip off (it's a series for christ sake) or it is separate game and then you have to understand that it doesn't have to follow predecessors.

All above is strictly IMO and is not intended to start any holy wars. It's just an attempt to provide another point of view on the subject. I was just really disapponted to see such a dismissive review (and bashing in this thread) of a game I've had great experience with.
Okay this post is a bit old but I want to respond anyway:

1. Starcontrol 3 wasn't as bad as people made it sound but it was still rather poor.

2. The biggest issue with the game is how they ruined the story. The Precursors were the ultimate "cool guys". They were a legend! Remember in Stargate when the Ancients were still unknown? They lost part of their coolness when they became "human" - especially Atlantis ruined the legendary image of the Ancients. Well Star Control 3 does just that with the story of the second game by making the legendary Precusors ... the equivalent of a cow. Talk about a big anti climax.

3. Combat looks better but the slightly tilted view can be annoying at times

4. The humor is lacking in this version which made the original so great

5. it just misses the "epic"ness of SC2. The way the Ur Quan music kicked in when they started a conversation, the way as time passed, you could see entire civilizations getting whiped out, discovering rainbow planets, forging aliances, discovering new civilizations, puzzling the pieces together, all the mysteries, etc.
