Dosbox seems to claim full compatibility for this game, and obviously others have gotten it to work. Could anyone help me figure out how to get this to work properly? I've tried running the game with all the soundblaster options, and with gravis ultrasound. Same result each time, and the same thing also happens when I choose manual configuration and match it up to the dosbox settings instead of auto-detect. Nothing is set as read-only. My actual OS is windows 7 x64, if it matters. The specs of my machine is: Processor: i7 4790k Graphics card: Asus gtx 980 Motherboard: Asus Z97-A RAM: Kingston hyperx fury 16GB Storage: Samsung 840 EVO |

Saving/Restoring problem - possible solution Hi, For anyone else who is trying to save the game and nothing happens: I found someone posting somewhere who suggested this, and it worked (for me): bring up the menu; position the mouse over the save icon (or the restore icon, if you're trying to restore); move the mouse pointer to the middle of the screen; click. That brings up the save (or the restore) list. - FrP |

BranjoHello |
Well, I'm in quite a shity situation. I played the game yesterday and everything worked fine, today I can't load yesterday's save and I passed 30% of the game and don't feel like playing from the beginning. This is what pop up when I try to load: Any ideas if this is repairable? :wondering: EDIT: The solution is to start "Vic32" instead of "Gene", beats me if there is any logic in this, but important thing is that it works. Now if anyone would have this problem would know the solution form here. |

Solutions and failures. Quote:
Disabling the sound completely solves the intro crash (occurs when getting of the train) Saving without sound and then loading with sound after this scene solves it temporarily (until the next speech from our protagonist occurs...) Tried soundblaster compatable, soundblaster 16 and more. Same error. Disabling any writing protection to the folder and files solves the saving bug In windows - right click the folder - properties - and uncheck writing protection. Any suggestions on how to run this properly with sound? I'm at a loss here. It seems, without a "real" "old" computer either you play it without sound or not at all. Kind Regards /Nick |

I know this thread is old, really old, but I'm having a major problem running this game. It worked fine the first time I ran it. I got tired, saved, quit playing, and now I can't run it again. Well, I can run the game, but if I try to talk to anyone or look at anything the game just shuts down. Any ideas? I've tried all sorts of things but nothing helped. I'm running it in DosBox, by the way. I adjusted CPU cycles, configured sound several ways, ran under replay, etc. If I try to run it in XP I don't get any graphics, just sound. Blah! I'm so irritated! I looked but I didn't see anyone else had this problem. If anyone is out there, PLEASE HELP! +++MERGED+++ Okay, so I looked at an earlier post and figured out, much to my dismay, why it wasn't working. It seems I tried to get the speech to work by enabling the digital sound in setup. Unfortunately, I had another problem with the game. I couldn't see any of the movies. I had to guess what happened. When a "movie" would come up, the screen would get all weird looking and I just had to press the "Esc" button. All in all, I'd say the game was pretty dull. I wished there were more times that I could press the "Esc" button and skip all of it. The game just seemed like a lot of busy work. I didn't like it much. I don't think all of the "movies" I missed could possible have made up for it. Well, onto better things. |

Well, I'm among the lucky people who are trying out the new DOSBox 0.64 and I can tell you that the game runs at a normal speed! You still need to wind it up to 20.000 cycles, but it works perfectly then (and the new DOSBox uses less CPU power even at such high cycles). k: |

T.Hi |
I don't know that I can help with not being able to save, but you can check to make sure the appropriate files do NOT have "Read Only" checked; sometimes that's the problem for me. As for being booted out at the part when you get off the train after the intro, the same thing happened to me. Then I read in the "Read Me" file that you can use the "Replay" file to pick up where you left off should you get booted off. So, I (1) restarted a game, then just before the point where I get booted off, saved and quit, (2) then used the 'Replay' file to continue from that point. Once I got to the point where I could play, I saved again, (3) then I - finally - went back to the 'Gene' file, loaded my game and went from there... Now, I have a different problem. While the game saves all of my options (Audio, Speed, Text, etc), it won't save that I want to play via mouse. I pick mouse and it always reverts back to the joystick, so of course I can't actually play - so frustrating since I fixed my other problem after a half-hour or so of thought! So, does anyone have any advice for me? Please don't tell me to use DosBox; I always get mixed up trying to use it and never get anywhere. Also, I can't play games from straight DOS on our computer (don't know why, just can't). My comp is a Win '98 that I got free from our local Rescue Mission so it has no paperwork or start disks. Still, I would think a game this old would work on it and it has so far... |
