wendymaree If you're recently having problems with enough memory to run The Incredible Machine2, is it possible that your Config.sys file has been overwritten or changed? (Keeping in mind that I can only speak from a Windows 98 point of view as I've never used Win XP.)

Do you have some reference to HIMEM.SYS and EMM386.EXE in your config file? It's important that there's no NOEMS command after EMM386.EXE - unless this is a game that doesn't use expanded memory. Also some old Dos games need a minimum amount of conventional memory - about 560k. You need to load all devices high in the Autoexec.bat to ensure you've got enough.
e.g. LH D:\MOUSE\MOUSE.EXE

My Config.sys:

rem DOS=SINGLE
DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS
DOS=HIGH,UMB
DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\EMM386.EXE RAM
devicehigh=C:\BTCCDROM.SYS /D:OEMCD001

My Autoexec.bat:

SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1 H5 P330 T6
SET CTSYN=C:\WINDOWS
C:\PROGRA~1\CREATIVE\SBLIVE\DOSDRV\SBEINIT.COM
LH D:\MOUSE\MOUSE.EXE

wendymaree Yamcha565656, I'm quoting the tech help post of a girl called Deb for installing instructions of The Horde. (Hope this helps)

Create an empty temporary directory. Let's call it \Tmphorde. Unzip the download into it. There are 6 .zips inside the download (Horde-1.zip through Horde-6.zip). Unzip these 6 .zips into the \Tmphorde directory too.

Go to the DOS prompt (MS-DOS prompt in Windows is fine) and type:

cd\Tmphorde
subst B: C:\Tmphorde
install C:
The installation will begin. Whenever it asks you to insert disks, just hit Enter. The game creates and installs the game into a directory called Horde.
When the installation is finished be sure to remove the drive substitution with:

subst b: /d

After the installation is complete, put a copy of the Hordecrk.com file that is in the Tmphorde directory into the \Horde directory with the game files. Then run Hordecrk.com to crack the game. You only have to do this once.

Run the HORDE.EXE file that's in the \Horde directory to start the game.

The game ran fine for me in DOS, but I should note that the music files in the game didn't work well with my sound card. There does not seem to be any configuration program or command line perimeters to change sound card settings. So if you have the same annoying noise do this: Once you're past the title screens and the game starts, you can hit F3 to access the Game options. Toggle through them with the arrow keys and turn the Music off.

NOTE that if you've made previous attempts to install the game and they failed, check to see if the directory called Horde was created You'll need to delete the Horde directory and start over using one of the methods above.

FreeFreddy Well, I don't know what your problem with DosBox is, but it's one of the best suitable programs for the old games.
