Sorry my english im spanish. Hope is useful for someone

In real DOS

I tested Jim Power in 3 different PCs

386DX40 - 2GB HDD FAT16 - DOS6.22
5x86 133mhz - 38GB HDD FAT32 - 2GB FAT16 - DOS6.22
Pentium 2 333mhz - 80GB HDD FAT32 - DOS7

In all computers, the game freeze, and hangs

After many test, I realize, the game dont freeze in the 386 if I play from floppy disk, but have random freeze from hard disk

I change the 1GB hard disk, with other smaller, a seagate 160mb, FAT16, and works OK

I think, the game have a problem with partitions FAT16 more than 512mb (cluster size?). Works Ok in FAT12 and FAT16 512mb or less

In the 5x86 without turbo (40mhz) and Pentium 2 without cache, from floppy the game run OK too

It seems this game is very sensitive to two things

1 - Speed of CPU (40mhz max?¿)
2 - disk drive

To successfully play Jim Power without any freeze in DOSbox, do this

1 - Download the game with installer, and the trainer

2 - Extract Jim Power file in to a temporary folder, for example "c:\games\jiminst" and mount in dosbox

3 - Inside dosbox, install Jim Power to disc C (install c, the game always install in a folder called "JimPower"

4 - mount Jim Power game folder to A: like a floppy

mount a c:\games\jimpower

Is important to mount JimPower folder, to have all files in root of virtual A floppy

5 - Copy trainer to A

6 - Before play game, set cycles to 3500, no more!

4 - Start game from drive A: with trainer (cf-jim)

5 - In start screen, press F11 to unlock keys

Is important to play game from A drive. From C drive, is cycles are 3500 or lower, the game look like is working OK, but have random crashes...

From A drive, and cycles 3500, I finishes the game yesterday without any trouble. From disc C and and cycles 3500, the game work Ok until second stage, when have a crash

NOTE: With the installer, the crack is not necessary. Using crack is easy. But if want to use game without crack, just configure the keys and joystick before mount to A

theelf Sorry the double post, but after a lot of trial and error... I found the problem!!!

The game is made to be played from floppy disk, the game expect the files in root of drive

Just in DOSBOX mount jimpower folder to drive A, and in DOS use a floppy

The game work like a charm

For sure back on the day, i played from floppy

If the game is installed, not need to use crack to play, at least for me, is working well, but of course, game is difficult trainer is a must jeje

Thanks

theelf Hi!!

Thanks for the reply

Yes, i see post 8, and download the trainer

But in fact, the trainer is not necessary, the keyboard is not working, because you need to install the game. It seems that when you install the game, the copy protection is not anymore

The download in abandonia dont have the install file, thats why you need to crack, because is not installed

Here is the game with installer, i upload to my server

Jim power download with installer

Just install, and not need to use any crack/trainer to use the keys

But sadly still hangs... dosbox, real dos, whatever

I tested in a 386, 486 and Pentium 2

DOS 6.22 with FAT16 for 386 and 486, DOS7 FAT32 for P2

Same problem... maybe a bad dump from original floppy??

I think the only hope is to find someone with the original disks. I tried to buy in ebay, but no luck to find them

Thanks!

Mighty Midget Hey there. Have you looked at post #8 in this topic? Seems someone found a solution to a similar if not identical problem. Please post again if that does not work.

Michael Ellis Thinking of trying it out just to see if the controls are bette then the PC engine version.

Which is the worst game on the system I have yet had to play through. The jump controls were horrid and you could get killed by spikes that you had a distance from that was almost the entiere sprite length of your character.

brett-anderson Did you know:

there is also a pc engine cd rom version of this game. Very rare.

The Sega version, if you'd ask me personally, plays best. The backgrounds are alll different and static, they don't give you sore eyes. Loads of things are different, most remarkably the top down levels all have been deleted and been replaced with platform and shooting levels. Also, the music, sound effects (have I heard these before in Turrican??) and power-up for your gun are different so go check this one out.

The SNES version is less difficult than the Sega version, but it is still frustratingly hard.
