The city is part of the urban sprawl of Northern New Jersey in the US, and was named after the town you mention. It was settled by the Dutch, and it's approximately 30 minutes away from New York City--which of course, they settled first, as New Amsterdam. :D "Hoboken" was deliberately chosen because it's so prosaic, so unheroic and ordinary: a dull, grey, ugly industrial place.

Come to think of it, it sounds like the Dutch and US versions have a lot in common. ;)

Great game, by the way. One of Meretzky's late attempts to find a new form for his wild humor as the PC market was changing. I found it a bit too topical at times (you had to know a good deal about American baseball to solve one major puzzle, for instance), but a lot had me laughing out loud.

Just a note, when I load the game, it says it can't find the restart.dat. I'm not sure if that has anything to do with it, but I felt I should note it.
Please help, this game seems really cool, but I hate playing games with no sound.

I had the same problem, but I found a way to fix it. The problem is that all the data files are write-protected. You have to go to My Computer, find the file you put the game in and check the properties of the game files. Uncheck the "Read Only" box on any .dat or .ed files or anything else that looks like you should be able to write to it, then run the install program. Change the settings to use Adlib or Soundblaster. Use the default IRQ and other settings. This should also solve the restart.dat problem.

I bought this game when it came out, but lost it a few years ago. There is lots of sound in the game. Each character and monster has at least one sound. Also there is sound on the intro and the adventure part of the game. There is more than 5 MB worth of sound. There's something wrong with this copy. Maybe some sound and music was on the audio track?

Actually, there's about 180MB of audio data (probably uncompressed) on the CD, which is mostly filled with cheesy(but actually not really that bad) voice acting.
Also, the best part of this game is the MASSIVE, and I truly mean MASSIVE, amount of puns for humor. Most of the jokes are true forehead-slappers. It's absolutely beautiful, and one of my favorite games of alltime. :)

sorry for the double post, I don't have an account here so I can't edit my last one. I just noticed the download for this game is only about 6MB, which would include all the files for the game except the voices. If any site admin can reasonably prove to me that this game truly is abandonware, I'll supply them with the voice data file, and instructions on how to modify the game to use the voice data files off the HD instead of the CD (back in that day, no one had 180MB of hard drive space to spare for all that voice data, so they didn't even make it an option). The file would probably compress fairly well, as I imagine it's totally uncompressed voice data.

I do truly want to provide this file for the small community of fans of this game... the voice samples make all the world of difference for this game; in fact I won't even play it without them. :D

The guy you need to find is in an area you can access through the tube under the empire state building. He's up in the hills, so you need some power pills.

If you can't get there (out of pills, like I was) then remember, the only way you're going to get into Carnegie hall is if you practice!

Hi, got a little problem with the sound (and you know mute games arent the same): I've got a SoundBlaster Audigy 2, and I configured the game with the default sound settings (removed read-only from everything, and then "Soundblaster" to sound and music, I/O:220, IRQ:5). Then, when I run it, I've got a message: "Can't find Soundblaster I/O: 220 IRQ:5", and the game crashes. I've tried several configurations (Soundblaster only for music, nothing for sound, Adlib for music, other I/Os and IRQs... Of course, I havent tried EVERY configuration of I/O-IRQ, there's a ton of them) and nothing seems to work. When I disable sound i get no message but a crash anyway... :wall:

VDMSound doesnt work either...

Oh, and something curious: If I've got eMule running, the game shows a "not enough memory for sound" message, but it lets me continue and then... The game runs! (no sound, thats the problem). If eMule is running cant run VDMSound, the game says "not enough memory" and this time doesnt let me continue...
Any ideas? Someone with the same problem? Is my computer really THAT special?

This game is just freakin' hilarious. This is about the only game I have ever, EVER seen that has enemies who TELEMARKET as an attack. Freakin' brilliance.

However, I too wish I could experience this game's voice acting. A game this campy can only be improved by additional campiness, and cheesy voiceovers would be just the ticket. I really wish I'd have been smart enough to pick this one up a few years back, when I saw it in stores. D'oh! :wallbash:

When ever I go into a battle, the screen where the bad guys are is glitched and the mouse moves very choppy like.

Try increasing your DOSbox cycles. 6000-7000 works for me.

I used to play this game with a trainer and it is very welcome to say the least!!! It boosts your funds and stats to skyheights and it changes the battles into walkovers.. so very unfortunately the trainer work not even in dosbox. that Slhtrptg.exe thingy?? Anyone here who get it to work?

I love this silly little game... not for it's content, but because of it being one of the only super hero role playing games.

I really need some help with this game. I'm in my fifth mission and I'm trying to restore the economy of Freehold. All was going well and I was looking for ways to keep an Ecuadorian warm, I obviously gave her the scarf, but she needed something warmer - a fur coat. Here's the problem: The scarf is the fur coat!
When Midas joined me I had him turn the fur coat into a scarf and now I can't finish the game.

1. Can I somehow overcome this problem without restoring a previous game (by cheating, etc.)?

2. If there is no way around it, and I'm forced to restore two chapters back, what items Midas can safely transform and what will I need?

Yes, that's the problem since a few official builds back. They blocked it because it was causing problems with some games. I think 0.63 or 0.65 still had support for multiple floppy images.

You can have several versions of DOSBox set up at the same time.
It might come in handy if you really have to use a feature that was disabled in a later version (like in this case). :p
