Lets talk about one of the greatest game consoles of all time: Nintendo Entertaiment System.
There was an article about Nintendo in local newspaper. When i read it, i had huge urge to plug the cords and play some of the classic games (Does Super Mario say anything to you?).
The Nintendo was my first console ever. Little Samson was my first game ever. I even beated Super Mario when i was 3 years old.
Some of the classic NES games that il never forget:
Super Mario Series: The basic 2D jumping adventures of the worlds famous video game hero: Mario
Duck Hunt: I loved this game because of the lightgun. Shoot ducks.
Shadowgate: An adventure game on NES.
Track & Field: Sports game. Push buttons very fast and rabidly.
Faxanadu: And RPG & Platform jumping mixture. Great music.
Tetris: Do i really have to say something about this?? Okay then: Im pro in this one!
Nintendo World Cup: A very violent soccer game.
Metal Gear: Spy-game. Infiltrate and Destroy Metal Gear.
Bionic Commando: Save the world from soldiers (also called "baddies" and "Nazis") by using a bionic hand.
Star Wars: Forget those new crappy Episode 1-3 games! This is the true king of Star Wars games!
Of course, i should also list Mike Tyson's Punch Out, Cobra, Legend of Zelda and many others, but i never had a change to play any of these classics..
What about you? Do you have any sweet memories of NES?
Thats all, now im off to download some ROM's.

Word, the NES was the greatest console ever.. (I've said this before on these forums, but I still have my NES set up in my room.. good times.. nothing like an impromptu 2 player game of DD or Track And Field)
My Top 5 NES games:-
Legend Of Zelda
Bubble Bobble
Isolated Warrior
Rad Gravity
Kid Icarus >> These two both make my top 10 games of all time list
Others that need to be mentioned:
Dragons Lair, Maniac Mansion, Double Dragon, Californian Games, Metroid, Excite Bike, Little Nemo ..oh...and to a lesser extent... Dark Wing Duck =p

Lots of sweet memories... I still have that old shoebox plugged on tv ready for thumb killing action. Good ol' days, you had to be a really good player if you wished to complete even a single game.

Oh man, I still love the old Nintendo. It was my first console ever. :ok:
Some games I really liked:
- Paperboy
- Adventure Island series
- Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series :w00t:
- Excite Bike
- Contra : I still remember the 30 lives cheat :D

Contra...
Contra...
Me and my friend spent hours on Contra, it's just one of the best sidescrolling games ever.
And the multiplayer was AWESOME!
Sad thing is, they never really released the Mother games in the US, they did release the first one under the name "Earthbound" bad sadly, it didn't get enough attention to warrant the release of the second.
Metal Gear was also real damn awesome, emergence of the stealth genre. (Although Snake's Revenge sucked.)
I also see Tulac's fanboyism has entered this topic, please ignore. :P

We are not talking about handheld here, you were talking about SSBM. Did you ever tryied that game? Yes, it's aimed rightfully at children since it's the big majority of those who actually play those games. But if you want to go deeper, SMBM have one of the deepest difficulty in moves, combo and fight patterns. There is actually strategy, you need to learn to dodge and block attacks. All the attacks actually have a purpose, and with so much characters it's almost impossible not to find one you don't like.
IMHO, Nintendo is #1 because their games is aimed at the old and proven theory of fun and gameplay over anything else, not because they aim at childs.

Aces Of The Deep = OMFG GOODNESS
I don't see what the problem is with Nintendo being consider "childish" I mean, they're certainly not.
And cmon' my favorite gaming franchise is one of the ones that's aimed exclusively at older audiences, Metal Gear Solid, so I should be able to compare and say "Wtf is this?"
But I can't, seriously, Nintendo has had plenty of exclusives and titles aimed at older audiences.
One example could be one of their best games, "Eternal Darkness".
Personally I think Tulac just considers anyone who disagrees with his "Baby Nintendo" theory as a fanboy.
Tulac.

Let's start from beggining. Nintendo (NES) was not the greatest console, but it was one of the first, with largest game collection to support it.
That's part that Sega did not understand, so later they become history in console market. Sega Master System (SMS) was technicaly much better then NES.
But still, what made Nintendo great are the games, which some can say are childish, but I would not agree. None of the consoles of that time did include much of 'adult' or 'mature' titles except computers (Amiga, Atari ST and PC, or in early time C64, ZX Spectrum, BBC, ...). Most of the games were actually the same titles, and those titles support my saying that SMS was more advanced and better consoles, as all of them looked and played better on SMS then on NES. But some exclusive titles made Nintendo famouse, including Mario, Zelda, Metroid and later F-Zero and StarFox.
I still play NES and SNES games, as well SMS and Sega Megadrive games, and all of them bring some nice memories back from the 80s-90s.a
And to mention some Nintendo titles:
* Adventure Island (Hudson's version of WonderBoy - made by some programers who actually were working on WonderBoy)
* Adventure of LOLo
* Castelvania - Finished it rescently, it took a lot of tries. Wholse series was nice, with my favorite being N64 version.
* Dr. Mario - nice tetris alike puzzle game
* Final Fantasy - this is were it all started
* Ice Climbers - great game with simple idea
* Metroid - Samus first adventure...
* Megaman - famouse series, but IMO first couple of titles were a bit hard
* Snow Bros - mario on the ice?
* Super Turrican - NES port of the famouse game, that game at the end if its life
* Xevious - nice top view shooter

Waht.. I mean is.. what is a Nintendo C64?
Back on topic.. Yes.. when I was a kid Nintendo was great, but as I've grown older.. well I moved on, I can totally acknowledge that the games are childish, but that's what Nintendo do and it's what they do best. I regard the NES as my favourite console of all time (Amiga still beats it, but it's not a console so..) just because of all the good memories I have of early Nintendo games.
Nowdays I'm still a console fan, but I've gone the way of the Sony.. I never have had two same generation consoles due to money restrictions, but if I was going to buy a second console I would definetly buy a Nintendo over an XBox. Just because XBox is too similar to the Playstation, whilst Nintendo offers more original content

Amiga CD32 was a console with all great Amiga titles. (Also to mention that CD32 was first 32 bit console :))
Simillar to you, I went Sony's way, but my second console is Nintendo GC, and I do own GBA.
I remember when N64 came out with Cruis'n USA/World and HidroThunder. I played those game in arcade in Germany, and loved it. Never seen those titles as childish....

There are exceptions to the whole Nintendo for kids thing, like Perfect Dark.. and Goldeneye

Meh, just because Nintendo makes games for the sake of fun and not for the sake of "MORE BLOOD" they're childish? Yeah, whatever. Ever thought of Nintendo making games for all audiences instead just for the average CS-kiddie?
I dunno if I ever had a NES, but I can remember some games that only were avaiable on the NES, so I think I had one.
However, since this console rocks, I got one from Ebay recently, with a few good games. I must've been a 10 times better gamer as a kid, just realized how friggin hard these games were ^_^
Of the recent consoles, the DS is definitly the most fun. It's sad that most of the good games are pretty short though.

There's AoE II for the DS? Cool.
I dunno, the first Gameboy indeed was cool, but now that our eyes are permanently damaged by fluent 3D-graphics I somehow can't see a thing on the old GBs. Everything is so blurry. It is way easier to play the old games on a Gameboy Pocket or Gameboy Color.
What really sucks about the DS is the inability of playing these old games. But what I've heard they made the GBA-Slot incompatible for GB-Games intentionally, so that nobody starts making emulators for the DS and stuff.

GB games are unplayable because they would require additional processors and different power (which on the other end require more components). GB games had different power from GBA games. GBA cards work fine on DS.

My favourites were:
- Mario Bros. 3 (tons of riddles and secrets)
- MM (great on any system)
- Tetris (always been addicted to that)

- Super spike V-ball

Market at the beggining was slow, as parents mostly purchased consoles for kids. Today those kids are much older and have more money to spend on consoles.
Also having 3 major console players is different then having only tow in beggining. But still, PS - PS2 and PS3 spread over a decade.

Halo 1 and 2 are two really great games.
The whole M$-typical thing about it, is the ending of Halo 2.
It's like they made Halo 2, then had the idea for the Xbox 360 and cut Halo 2 in half. The other half is then released for XBox 360, so they can make sure every Halo-Fan who wants to see the story finished gets the 360.
That's what I meant.
Oh, and I have a argument about the SSBM pic. You've seen Mr. Game and Watch at the upper right? I bet no kid younger than 12 does even know what a Game and Watch is ;)
Oh, before I get dissed again: Of course back then Game and Watch was made for the kids. But I guess the kids of yesterday are still playing their favourite Nintendo game today.

Very intelligent argument.
Like I said I still have a NES and I still use it.
But another thing is that yesterdays' kids know games that are simple but enjoyable for hours, even days. Todays games are all about fancy graphics but when you play through the whole game once it's no fun anymore. They stopped programming games you can play over and over again four, five years ago.
The only exeption personally I think there is would be ProEvolutionSoccer.
Probably it's a thing of personal taste.
What do the others think?

I've got a PSP and I'm loving it, but there's just that extra level of enjoyability missing that you can only get with Nintendo.
Tony Hawk games have great replayability.
And the best soccer game ever is Fever Pitch Soccer on the Mega Drive 2.

Answering to your question:
"Does playing Super Mario Bros. for the NES make any of you a small child?"
No. Mainly cause I played it only when I was little and it wouldn't make me a child if I played it now - it's just a simple game, a classic to be exact. Tetris could be called for mentally disabled, but everyone enjoys this - it's FUN.
I actually have played more childish games than Mario (not long ago, last year - "Porky Pig's Haunted Holiday" for SNES.) It's the WB character which I liked all of my life, funny and well has a neat voice. I aced it, but it is really in my book's content for FUN. I mean, compare it to the other stuff I play on PC. :D

Nintendo games aren't childish, although they seem so. They're just fun. Sadly, in todays "gamer-soceity" fun is declared by the amount of blood and in how many different ways you can kill your enemie. Simple fun gameplay is rare nowadays.
I know, the "gamer-soceity" I described above is very generalized here. Of course there's much more than just the two categories "blood" and "fun". But you get the idea.

NES / SNES rock, by far the best counsels eve. But, after GC I pretty much gave up on Nintendo, I have no urge to play 12 dozen editions of Mario Party, yes, GC has its good games, Super Smash was fun for a bit, Metroid Prime was OK, Resident Evil 4 ROCKED, but for the majority of them I hated it. I don't do platformers, so no Zelda or Mario, so no Nintendo.
