Voted RAR. Don't think I need to say something about the subject, it already been discussed elsewhere.

I voted for zip.
Why? Because it's standard (I know abandonia is breaking every standard :bleh: )
I have 56k connection, but I don't mind.
If you haven't noticed WinRar has compression metods which vary from fastest (larger) to best (smaller file size).
So if you didn't use WinRar's best compression metod - GET TO WORK!!!
Just to mention this can be used to compress in zip format, so you don't have to change extension, to change size! :ok:

The two ZIP and RAR formats of WinRar are still different, so the ending has to be either .zip or .rar.
Well, of course I voted for RAR.
But as you probably almost all know, to convert all the archives on the site from ZIP to RAR would take heck of a time, so it was decided to not to convert them. In that case the vote is only interesting for seeing how many people would like the idea of converting... ;)

I voted zip. Rar is maybe better, but like Kosta said, zip is still standard for most people around. Especially for not so experienced one. I think dos emulation is complicated enough for them. Don't make any needless changes. It isn't worth it.

You are aware that this discussion is pointless, don't you? As Kosta mentioned: it has been discussed before and Abandonia won't change the format of the archive...
(I casted a null vote in this poll btw) :P

It seems that noone read my post?
I said that even without changing the extension of archive we can change size of the file! So why are we discussing and not get to work? <_<
(for more information see my previous post!)
I voted zip also. Mainly because I agree that it's standard. Not everyone is the most keen person with computers and utilities. Especially some people that may have stumbled onto this site that have no idea what winRAR or compression utilities are. People are used to winzip. RAR could be confusing to the poor souls who aren't very computer literate. I work in graphics design and computer setup/repair. People are stuborn. (very stuborn, it's quite annoying I regretfully admit. I'm sure some of you know how it is)
This site is providing a service for old dogs that, maybe, don't want to learn new tricks. Keep it simple, standard for them.
I personally don't even have winRAR. I have a very old, slow, computer with limited space at the moment, limited space in which I like to reserve as much as I can for resources, until I can get me a real computer again :P. This site put some fun back in my addiction.
duh me, didn't read all the posts first. Spank me
Something I forgot to mention the previous time we discussed this. Rarlabs (The creator of RAR and WINRAR) also has freeware un-rar packages which can be downloaded from here http://www.rarlabs.com/rar_add.htm
They are free and the windows one is something like 120kb which can be downloaded by any 56K modem

I voted for zip. I just haven't used other methods that much. I learnt to use zip on some old computer, old windows, so I used this little program, but now I have xp, so it's even simpler :bleh:

well kosta can unzip and rar them on the server. so no need to download and upload it.
i think it can be scripted. (only the links in the database should be changed.)
i would suggest bzip2 ;)
although rar is good as well but zip does the job as well.
there are some sites which use windows installers for the games. that is bad :)

You mean archives with integrated rar or zip executables. Yes, you're right, but you can still unpack them using you're favourite packer.

Well guess i'm the black sheep or somethin, because i voted for ace!

I also prefer Ace actually because of the winace program interface but rar gives better compression results in most cases...
I also like the advertising of Winace: "because sometimes size does matter..." LOL :)

What do you think how you can decrease the size of the .zip-archives? They're compressed with best compression already (at least the games' archives I upload). And if you mean that even if they're RAR archives with .zip extension, only WinRar could open and recognize them then. And WinRar is a program that you'll need to get and install first.
Well, maybe I just didn't get your point. In that case please explain it. :)

Rar get better compression than Zip. It's not a question of raring a .zip file, it's a question of unziping the game and raring it after.

I voted Rar.
I used to love zip. It did everything I wanted to do. I then discovered that there were better compression methods, so I found myself using ace. That served me well for a while, but then I decided to look into it more, and discovered that rar compression was much better... So it goes like this: rar > ace > zip. Although unfortunately the standard is inferior.
The rar program is also nice. Its easy to use, and can handle zip and rar, so it covers all my needs.

I voted for Ace.
As a program, is very versatile, its format is better than Zip and can also handle Rar extraction......plus I utilized it for a long time (http://www.abandonia.com/~thevoid/DOH!.bmp), and got used to it.....

Can someone explain me - What the hell on earth is going on?
I did some tests (with WinRar 2.90) and unzipped some games from abandonia. Then I rarred and zipped then (I made two archives) using best compression metod, and got results something like - a game that before ocupied 500kB, now zipped it ocupies 1MB, and rarred cca 900kB!
I tested around 10 games and everysingle game was with the same effect!
BTW Omuletzu, awesome avatar! :ok:

If you try to compress an archive into a new archive further, it'll become larger in the process. You cannot compress compressed files yet more. ;)
Unknown Hero

No, I didn't compressed already compressed archive, I unzipped and then zipped already unzipped files. Got it?

Does anybody remember arj? or pkzip?

ARJ was the compression I used to use on my old 486. A very nice tool to get large files on several floppies. No more need for those awful things anymore thankfully. Yeah for USB.
