I recently downloaded a warcraft 2 ripped version that actually works. i run it form win 98, works just fine. it's an interesting game, played it once before. the most i like about it is sounds.
but the biggest downside is (only now i discovered) the high cost of units (even peasants) and (this one i knew before) very limited resources. To me it seems basically like upgraded Dune 2.
Still what i do find a bit annoying is that despite nice graphics the movement of screen (map scroll) is too fast on todays computers. anyone knows how to reduce it? i tried reducing the speed in the menu, but it didn't help much. what about resolution? was there anyway to change it to a higher one? i can't seem to remember it because it's been a while since i played the original version.

Well, to reduce the map scroll you can either use SlowDown - download here (http://www.pctipp.ch/downloads/dl/16960.asp) - or you can use DosBox which you can download through a link here, if your PC is fast enough for it.
As this is a game from 1995, you can't change the resolution in it yet. It's always 640x480.

Man... this thread is warez talk.
Warcraft 2 is still sold - and quite cheap - in something called "Battle.net edition, which is supposedly somewhat better and runs under XP with no problems.

Only warez thing is that he mention he downloaded riped version.
If I was you, I still would consider to buy this game, as new version is optimized for a new computers, and it comes with additional expension pack and all cool videos.
I paid 10 bucks me think for it, and I already had old battle chest. It is very worth it!
And it is funny to compare Dune and Warcraft...

Rips are still warez though.

yah, well... some sites offer them as abandonware. :O
anyway i doubt new version would help, because i don't have XP. and i already played it once (the original), i just want to replay it a bit nothing else. probabyl not even the whole game, because i am sure i will get tired of it somewhere in the middle.
I also heard that there is a remake available. Or should i say half remake, something like Zdoom, where you need some original files to make the game work...

Or Warcraft 1, 2 and 3, in fact. Each was a very different game in terms of how it played (personal preference goes to Warcraft 1).

@ velik_m - AOE offered some stuff that Warcraft 2 did not have, and improved animation, different kind of story with ability to replay same missions. Both games have their ups and downs.
@ gregor - never heard of remake of WC2. Are you sure you did not mean Total Annihilation? There is a remake of that game, which is converted into 3D world.

I have the old version, and what I do is use the cursor on the mini-map, and that works just fine.

I've bought every game in the series for 50 bucks when they first came out (except for Warcraft 1, I doubt a 6 year old kid can walk into a store and buy that :P).
I'm a big fanzor, WC2 is still the best in the whole series.
Always loved its smaller, smarter battles.

WC3 had nice story and offered nice gameplay. But IMHO it is short.

well i don't know. i have to look it up and see if i can come up with the remake...
and in my opinion all these games are not that much different.
let's say war 2 and AOE 2
1. they both have farms (sure Aoe has better graphics and farm funcions more specified - food separated from housing). more farms = more units
2. they both have town halls where you create peasants
3. they both have baracs, sort of lumbermill and smth. to create siege units and soemthing to create horse riding units (AOE can stock their production in lines).
4. they both have similar warships, but instead of drilling for oil AOE has fishing ships
5. they can both group units but neither can make companies (warcraft can only group 9 units and AOE has formations which dont' work too good)
6. they both have trees that need to be cut down (although there are much more of them in AOE 2)
7. they both have godl mines that need to be mined to produce the units
8. the both have some form of magic (war2= magician, AOE 2 = priest). AOE 2 has less powerfull spells.
9. they both have similar tactics in battle. you can do either a lot of damage if you can control your units and just prevent them from going berserk and scater arround you only need 2 siege units and a group to protect them.
...
I know there are also some differences but basically gameplay is same.
Differences:
1. story
2. AOE has hills
3. AOE has strong castles
4. AOE has stones to be mines
5. AOE has trading
6. Units in AOE dont' have magic to be used (except for the priest)
7. "Magic" in AOE is more "down to earth"
8. Better graphics in AOE
9 Aoe is from Microsoft

I totally love Warcraft 3 and Frozen Throne. The graphics and story grabbed me.

^True, the 3D effects work realy well for this kind of game.
I never played War 2 online but I could tear the comp a new A#$!

War 2 online = worse hacking than Open Battle.net on Diablo 2, and that's saying ALOT.

That's why I rarely play online strategy games.
Once I installed Total Anihillation multiplayer, and then after long updates, finally I was able to connect to net. First battle against some guy with agreement not to attack for 20 minutes. And then he came with huge army (I mean HUGE) in 10 minutes.
Warcraft 3 had best video sequence IMHO.
@ gregor – Warcraft 2 and AOE 2 are from two different times. More correct would be to compare AOE 2/3 with Warcraft 3. IMHO Blizzard games are superior to M$ games.

I'd agree.
There's rarely a lack of balancing issues in Microfeces' games, Age III for example had a massively unbalanced Russian/German civ.
Never really have to worry about that in Bliz, the best things about their games is that they get them perfect from the start and better with the patches.

Sadly, playing older games, oftentimes you will run into MANY people hacking the game. Tis sad, really.

Yar.
Somehow Starcraft avoided it.
You hardly ever meet hackers on there.

i know. all i am trying to show is that they are quite similar and that in fact microsoft didn't basically make any huge inovations with AOE (at lest not the first ones).
