Pfft, again, just Microsoft trying to be better than the rest (and as you said, they're all features other IMs already have).
And besides, orange? What's wrong with the current colour?

Well the only thing that I find interesting is the file sharing folder...

@Danny252: For some of your questions you could actually read the whole thing ;)

It's work on integrating Windows Messenger with the Adress Book, which allows for unified contact management across the system. This way contacts can be entirely cross-referenced and centralized.

It's also known as auto-complete, and it's useful to speed up typing names, etc.

Like a vCard. See "Unified Contacts" above.

Or you can rename contacts with nonsensical screenames to their actual name, which makes keeping track of who you're talking to much easier.

It's a pretty popular feature of ICQ, which has been around since, oh, 1996. I'd say it's a pretty popular feature (AIM doesn't have it because after the AOL buyout of Mirabilis the ICQ and AIM protocols were merged, so technically it does have it). It's a neat feature when you're trying to finish a conversation when someone drops offline, or if you want to leave someone a message to get in contact with you when they get online.

* !Conversations While Appearing Offline Which you'd do why?[/quote]
So that you can appear offline to everyone on your contact list and have a conversation with only a single person or two. Useful when you don't feel like having to deal with a bunch of other people messaging you or when you don't want people to know you're online (temporarily avoiding someone, etc).
No Jabber support :( I despise single protocol IM apps! I've got friends one multiple, so I need Trillian, Gaim, Miranda or any such thing. MSN sUxx0r.

Hmm, that reminds me, I hope Trillian doesn't take FOREVER to update to the new MSN protocol like when MSN6 was out :(

Hotmail does this already, and I often know my contacts emails anyway, I I want to email them. But I thought this was an alternative to email?

I tend not to type names. And I'd spent longer actually selecting the autocomplete word than it would to type it.

But see, it tells me their email too. Plus most people tend to keep a part of their name the same.

How about you get reliable contacts that don't do that? Plus, if I want offline messages, I dont want 60 different screens popping up as soon as I log on. i still like email.

Avoiding people, I block them. If I dont want people messaging me, I dont message them. If I dont want to talk to anyone at all, I don't log on.

Yeah, Hotmail does it. So what? Hotmail is not a professional tool and isn't really targetted at the Exchange crowd. People in corporate environments actually have to use tools like Outlook, and can't get away with that toy known as Hotmail. Same goes for GMail.

That's nice that you don't tend to type names. Some of us do and as any coder or *nix systems administrator (including myself on both counts) can tell you, autocomplete/intellisense speeds things up immeasurably. When you know people with non-generic names or actually have to keep in contact with a large number of people you might not actually know it's big time saver.

Again, because often people actually have to keep track of little things like mailing and office addresses; business, home, and mobile phone numbers; etc.

...and some people don't. Furthermore, what about contacts with similar names? This also goes back to the discussion of autocomplete. When you have to keep in contact with a large number of people it isn't always easy to remember everyone's full name. Aliases also allow you to shorten up otherwise enormous contact names.

Oh, I'm sorry that I know people that still use dialup or who have connection problems from time to time. I guess I'll just have to stick with the people who use those perfect internet connections that never have trouble. That was a really brain-dead comment.

Personally I'm not a big fan of blocking everyone on my contact list so that I can sign on to ask a friend to lunch without recieving two dozen random IMs. It's also nice in that it lets you have a longer discussion with someone without being interrupted by others. It's a privacy thing, not a restraining order thing.
Microsoft is attempting to improve a tool for use in professional enviroments and is happening to provide a bunch of features along the way for more power users. You're obviously a person who has never had to use a similar tool in a large environment or manage contact with people who don't live down the street from you. Just because you have all your buddies' e-mail addresses memorized doesn't mean that I have the 700+ contacts (including addresses, phone numbers, and business affiliations) in my address book memorized. You're entire post read "I don't need this" and "you should do that instead" which is not only selfish, it smacks of the delusion that Microsoft has the least bit of concern over what a non-corporate user thinks.

More likely than not you'll be forced to update or not use MSN at all.
