Hey, ok, recently I have been trying to find good movies that I haven't seen before, that are good, and not toally, "inapropriate". I failed. Evil Dead had a little bit of nudity (not ok with parents, though I'l probabally try renting the second one), Pulp Fiction had super language ("Royal with cheese..." Samuel Jackson was awesome tho, affro for life!) and Dawn of the Dead was just a tiny bit gorry for my taste (although I'l probly watch it at a friends house anyways). So, does anybody know of any good movies that aren't too "inapropriate" that I should watch? I've pretty much seen all the PG-13 ones...

Waking Life if you like Philosophy. Run Lola Run has a bit of language, but other than that, top notch plot and presentation. Donnie Darko also has some stronger language... jeez, your limitations don't exactly make it easy....

Dumbo? :P

That, and if you haven't seen Nightmare Before Christmas yet, well it may be the movie for you.

Maybe you'd like The Cup, but, judging from the tastes you demonstrated in what you like in BP's list, I doubt it.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, perhap.

or Yellow Submarine if you're feeling like some music. Same with The Wall, or Quadrophenia. ...or just Spinal Tap, if you like laughs with your rock and roll.

as for Run Lola Run being in German, I don't believe there's an alternative.

The Adventures Of Robin Hood (1938) (not too sure if I've seen it..)
That would be the one with Errol Flynn, I think. But any Robin Hood film will be better than that horrid Kevin Kostner version.

Some that weren't mentioned yet:
Richard Loncraine's Richard III (give it a try even if you hate Shakespeare. Ian McKellen plays the title role, by the way)
pretty much anything directed by Alfred Hitchcock (you might like Frenzy, I think)
Trainspotting
The Full Monty :D
anything directed by Kurosawa (Ran is on Piggy's list, but Rashumon is missing for some reason)
Smoke
The old version of Invasion of the Body Snatchers - it's hilarious
The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance
Battleship Potemkin - this one's a silent film, though, but Piggy's list also had a couple of silent films, so I assume it's OK
Das Kabinett des Dr Caligari - expressionist German silent film, but obviously the titles have been translated
any Buster Keaton film (again they're silent films, but they're well worth watching)
To Be Or Not To Be (the old Lubitsch version)
Smoke Signals - "this is a good day to be indigenous" :)

Can't think of any others at the moment.

- Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead - Gary Oldman is great in this one, as is the writing. Excellently confusing.

- Dead Man - the best Jim Jarmusch movie. Enough said.

- Amadeus - one of the few movies in which music is a main character. Brilliant.

- Christiane F. (or Wir Kinder vom Bahnhof Zoo) - excellent movie which should be seen by all. The scariest film I've ever seen, and it's not even horror.

Carnival Of Souls is one I heard about through the forum. It's available for free download...the whereabouts of which is in another thread. I enjoyed it hugely, although it's not exactly uplifting. Very haunting and challenges what you think reality to be.

Can't believe nobody mentioned Amelie (we can't handle titles longer than 3 words in English, apparently) until now, it's a wonderful piece of cinema. Sticking with the French theme, Belleville Rendez-vous is a similarly amazing animated piece, with practically no dialogue (and hence, no swearing) plus a Laughing Cow (La vache qui rire) joke - can't go wrong.
I've not actually gotten round to watching A Series of Unfortunate Events yet, but if it's anywhere near as good as the books it'll be great.

Well, having just watched it I reckon A Series of Unfortunate Events is pretty good. Not as great as the books but better than I expected - there's some weird pacing (some of the deleted scenes should probably have been left in) but it makes pretty good use of Jim Carrey - and I don't even like him that much (although I'm warming oto him since Eternal Sunshine). Nice to see Billy Connolly doing something well again too - his last standup DVD (well, the Dublin one, not seen the newest) was really disappointing.

I don't think Amelie was translated, but I've seen it with English subtitles, which is all you need, really. The French voices are really good, so it would be a shame to lose them.

I'll do as I always do in this kind of thread and recommend The Fearless Vampire Killers. There's just something about that movie that's absolutely great. It's the ultimate dark fairytale, and Polanski's best movie, IMO. :)

Also, if you're not sure that you've seen The Thing, you should definitely go do so right now. It's simply excellent (I'm talking about John Carpenters version here, although the 1951 version is also worth a watch). :)

Edit: If Raffles can recommend Battleship Potemkin, I have to recommend October (10 days that shook the world).

Have you seen the film?
It concentrates mostly on the relationship between him and Bella Lugosi. The film is not family oriented, but it's a good biographical film that would be apropreate for anyone over the age of 9 (so they'd be able to understand the point of it).

Well I don't really care about the ratings - so I don't even know them. The movies I wrote would all be apropreate for everybody aged 12 and older (regarthles the clasification) and I know of kids (8,9) that watch horror films like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre or Friday the 13th.

So no mater what they say about those films the ones I put on the list will not take any of your childhood inosence away (unless making you think falls into that cathegory). :sneaky:

It seems to me this turned out to be a bragging post of what DVD's you own, and not a recommendation for some really thrilling, inspiring movies.

Also: Police Academy? Retardness has a limit, which was widely passed when they made a third movie.

Unfortunately the only version I can find is directors cut...ya it does, I don't really care for ther language, but its better than gore and other stuff...

AI was ok I guess, kinda neat plot idea.

Police Academy doesn't rock - the first one was tolerable but the sequels are terrible.
If you like that sort of thing, have you ever seen the Naked Gun films? Pretty similar, not quite as bad. Airplane (and Airplane 2) are much better again, and Hot Shots is great - good use of Charlie Sheen.

AI was far too long - there was at least an extra half hour on the end that was completely pointless. Minority Report was similarly ruined - what is it with Dick's stories making mostly bad films (Blade Runner, of course, is wonderful)? Then again, I've never liked Spielberg as a director (Green Mile being the exception that proves the rule, mainly due to the screenplay really though).

Well, I sort of agree with that. It's a good film, but you shouldn't expect too much from it, as it's one of those films that don't really age well. But it was brilliant when it came out.

Then again, I've never liked Spielberg as a director (Green Mile being the exception that proves the rule, mainly due to the screenplay really though).

OK...
There are some very good Spielberg movies (like The Duel), but how did you even get to him???

Spielberg did NOT direct The Green Mile (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120689/)! It's based on a book by Stephen King - but that's about the only Steven-Steven conection there is...

D'oh sorry, that was me being incredibly dumb - Schindler's List was what I meant. I got to Spielberg through someone mentioning AI.

@Anubis: Never seen Terminal (not a fan of Robin Williams either - wasn't that the one with him in it?), Saving Private Ryan is annoyingly Americo-centric (and too long, again) and Indiana Jones is overrated - they're OK, but nothing special.

Yea... pretty great film... not a movie you can just jump into without thinking about it the plot though. Of course, it has nothing on "The Waking Life".

Simon West directed Tomb Raider and Jon de Bont directed the second.
Jurrasic Park was directed by Spielberg though.

I'd give Donnie Darko a 3/4, woulda been a 4/4 but it had a bit more language then I really could care for, and the plot was incredibly hard to follow, still a good, creative movie though. :ok:

@Beef I love Indian Jones...Harrison Ford rocks LOL
And its Tom Hanks in the terminal, not Robbin Williams, you really should try it sometime, its not half bad :) And about Steven Spielberg, ya hes a bit overated, but at least he doesn't try to make millions out of making 20 billion sequels like Lucas does.

@Amazoness Seen all the Tob Raiders, , and I've seen Jurrasic Park like 200 times, prettyt good movi though.

BB, as moogle already said, it was Tom Hanks in the Terminal. I disliked idea after I heard about the movie, but when I saw it it was very interesting and etnertaining.

More about Spielberg's work you can read here. (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000229/)

Some other movies that he produced/directed:

Poltergeist (Story, screenplay)

Minority Report (Director)

Minority Report was really annoying - it had these neat visual elements and a brilliant underlying idea, but he turned it into a naff action movie and dumped all the ethics and philosophy.

Did I mention Belleville Rendez-vous in here yet? If so, mentioning it again; genius film.

I'll tell you what was also annoying X-men 1

was it me or did it just completely miss a scene out or something?!

they talk about rogue and magneto's plan then, pfhhht!
they're all looking up at rogue on the statue of liberty while she's creating white light and smoked, scaring the heck out of the president and other weird ... rich people.

Minority Reports is based on great story. Effects were good (not the best), but great play by Tom.

Another movies I like with Tom is Last Samurai, MI 1 & 2. War of Worlds was good, but nothing special. (bed Ending IMHO)

Mr. and Mrs. Smith are worth watching, same as Bourne Indentity and Bourne Supremacy.
