The game was great for it's epoch, however cannot match today's games (but all action games are like that.....they loose value too fast). I used to play it when i was a kid, it's a good game to spend a few hours before getting bored of the repetivity and it has the unique feature (for the time) to buy stuff and upgrade ur spaceship. Overall it's a nice game to have as a classic.
If i was about to rate it in 89 when it was released i would give it a 4.2 for good graphics and smoothness and those extra features that other games lacked not five though because it is not a unique idea....by my opinion it's an enhanced space invaders version. Today though if i would compare the overall value against other old games, especially adventure one's it cannot stand chance. However if i compare it with same genre kind of games it would still score high ;)
If you like flight fighting games go for Red Baron, which is also around the same age ;)
Xenon 2 is a great game for kids mostly.

Red baron fits more into a simulation genre. This is just plain shooting fun. which is great when you are not in the mood to play something more ..intellectual :)

Old flying space shooting arcade games were the best. =) Lots of great wasted time on those.

Great game! Just wanted to comment on the music. It was done by Bomb the Bbehind (Tim Simenon) who was know to the Amiga community for his early triphop tune, "Beat Diz". The gamemusic, Megablast, was first released on BTB's LP "Into the dragon". Bitmap Brothers heard it and asked him to do a remix for the game. The original song has rap lyrics that were cut out for the game remix. I'm sure the game music had alot to do with the success of the game, and that BTB's success had alot to do with the game being a smash hit! :)
Love the shop owner by the way...

Bomb the Bbehind read "Bomb the Bbehind" in my post when I added it. Something happened on the way to the forum. Scary hackers and ADB.

Why does the word "B A S S" turn into BBehind?

It doesn't anymore.

The game was actually innovative at its time of inception as it was the first game of its genre to allow backwards scrolling (if only a little). The music was actually by bomb the bass and is entitled "megablast" (surprisingly).
The bitmap brothers created a lot of games in the amiga heyday however this for me is the best. an absolute classic.
to answer a couple of the questions:
you cannot save the game, unless you emulate the platform and save the game state.
there was a known cheat, at some point in the game you were supposed to type in "russianair" for unlimited lives or energy (as i recall)

Fond memories of this game. I remember finishing this game on a single life :max:
Much to the disdain of my friend because we made a deal to play in turn till we died.
Great site, only just found this because I was playing around with DosBOX and my original Sierra adventures looking for a fix for KQ2.

Just thought I'd mention that the 'russianair' cheat was for one of the other versions - Atari ST, I think. The pc cheat was: when loading the game and confronted with the graphics mode menu, select your mode with the F7 key. Then, ingame press 'i' to become invincible. [just tested it, it definately works!]

id give it a five out of five. it was great fun and getting upgrades for the ship was fun aswell. great graphics and sound, and great gameplay. imaginative enemies, and customisable upgrades. towards the end, the upgrades on your ship became massive! and your weapons became massive. good fun it was.
only thing is, when i played it as a kid i could win it easily, most of the time. now i cant even get past level 1, and its not a speed problem, it plays exactly as i remember it. i mustve lost the knack i guess.

The graphics in this game were amazing for its time! They look like they're from 1994 atleast. Although the white coloured bullets did look a little simple, and the colour schemes were a little thesame throughout the levels if i remember correctly.

I can get it to run, and get in game sound - but cannot get the music!
Anyone got any ideas?

Yeah they are pretty cool - they follow the rounded/shaded Bitmap Brothers style that was also seen in Xenon, Speedball, Magic Pockets, Chaos Engine and Cadaver. I thought Xenon was a bit better game though
I remember me trying to find a non-existing disk 2 for this game. That was something very frustating. This game is really a jewell. Does anybody know if this version (i mean, the one posted here) is the full, with a real ending?
Thanks,

I can't say what this particular version is like, having not bothered to play it through. However, I bought it Xenon 2 when it came out back in 1989, and did clock it then - there wasn't much of an ending sequence, just Crispin the shopkeeper saying something like "that's it folks! Don't forget to turn off your set!", before giving you a white spot as though the screen had been switched off. Then the game restarted from level one, with you back to the basic ship, no money etc. Like I say, this is a copy of the game I bought, so that is probably as full as the ending gets. Like a lot of old games, I suppose being able to say "I did it!" was worth more than being given a flashy completion sequence.
the music was originally by john carpenter as heard on his film "assault on precinct 13"... the song is also known by that name.
so there.
..and xenon 2 is mega... and a blast.
never got past the 4th level though.... best give it another go...
Can't download ... pls fix the link. Thank you.

Errrm, are you all playing this with DosBox? If so how do you mount it and as what drive? Because everytime i start it up in dosbox i get to the start menu and when i select 1 player it asks me to insert other disk??
If someone knows how to get it working please let me know!
Thanx in advance!

I hope everyone here who's saying that this game is so great, is actaully referring to the Amiga origina - this version sux.
OK - the graphics are OK, but the sounds is some of the worst I've heard - the music in this (PC) version is aweful. The thing that made the Amiga version so great was the sound, without that, the game doesn't hold up I'm afraid. 2 out of 5 for this version....

Just for the sound?
The sounds aren't that important, if the gameplay is great you don't need sounds! And the gameplay is the greatest of it's kind. No other game is so fun and so hard.
Besides for PCspeaker these sounds aren't too bad. I remember the music so well... even from my childhood.

Hello all,
I remember when someone gave me this on two 5 1/4-inch floppy disks!! That's where the Disk 2 comes from...it'd stop the game halfway and you'd have to insert the second disk to continue!
I haven't tried the sound yet...
Does anyone know how to EXIT the game once it's started?? I was pressing the Esc key but it didn't seem to do anything. Finally in desperation I used Ctrl-Alt-Delete and it brought up Task Manager, minimised Xenon2, and then I was able to right-click and "Close". But obviously this is unsatisfactory...it may be easy for everyone else but I couldn't work it out...! :sos:
Thanks!!

What's the deal with the music? Bomb The Bass made it for the game, the Bitmap Brothers nicked it, or what?
It's my Text ringtone :P

Can anyone help me?

There is no "new XP version".
You can run the old DOS version of the game with the help of DosBox (http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/).

As soon as I've download the file my antivirus (Avast) has detected a virus threat.
The webmasters should take a check as soon as possible!
dosraider

Check YOUR avirus support site as soon as possible.
False positives are common with old dosgames, certainly if heuristic scan is enabled.

it's retarded Avast, adisiero, there is no virus
No virus found for me, I guess it's a false positive.
Negative from Avira, PC Tools and Kaspersky.
I don't know which is the particular file you got flagged, but you could upload it to http://www.virustotal.com/ and you'd get the result for each of several dozens more of AV programs.
I don't think there's any virus.

hi there, I have two issues:
first: Game sounds are not working correctly (its like emulated pc speaker in dosbox).
second: the F7 cheat is not working, pressing anything other than "space" and the directional keys will not work.
I'm using latest version of dosbox, please help me if you can
Luchsen
05-08-2009, 02:22 PM
It is emulated PC speaker. If it's too fast or slow, in-/decrease the cycles with Ctrl+F11/F12.
And the cheat works flawlessly.
thethingx
09-08-2009, 11:05 AM
@Luchsen: thank you for your reply, but about the cheat issue,
Can you please post a "fool-proof" step by step guide?
because I don't know why I can't get it working.
Luchsen
09-08-2009, 01:22 PM
1.) Start game
2.) Select video mode with Arrow Up/Down
3.) Press F7
4.) Wait for title screen
5.) Press Spacebar
6.) Press Arrow Down two times or Arrow Up one time, and MUSIC OFF should be selected
7.) Press Spacebar to turn on sound
9.) Press Arrow Up two times or Arrow Down one time, and 1 PLAYER GAME should be selected
10.) Press Spacebar
11.) Press Spacebar
12.) Press I
13.) Play invincibly
Now that should be fool-proof. ^_^ (Customising keys is not for fools, so I let that out. *hides his laziness*)

Hey,
sorry to bother you with this old game. But is anyone else having issues, when facing the final boss? When I', halway passed his ship, the screen goes completely grey, making it impossible to actually end the game properly. I do remember having this issue back then with the original game.

I'm still enjoying Xenon 2 Megablast
I can still remember which are the best upgrades to buy at each of the levels shops.
