If this is the same Amulets and Armor a friend and I played years back(The screenies tell me it IS).... then your neglecting to take note of the multiplayer option. It is playable over IPX protocol. The multiplayer option was the only feature that kept us coming back for more. After all, isnt an adventure best in the company of friends?

Enjoy multiplaying!

Multiplayer? I didn't notice there's a multiplayer.

Now that I'm reading the review again, I can see there's much I can change there to make it better. Oh well, it was my first review. I'll learn from the mistakes.

Hey, its a great first review, :ok: so dont think i was harping on you :D Its easy to overlook a feature such as multiplayer with an interface that seems so dated and clunky, its a shame such a good game comes with a terrible interface.

What kind of character is everyone using?

hey yall i figured out the first part of the first quest. I killed all the creatures in the allowable game area for the section and picked up anything i figured was of any use (no pots or bowls). I been into the area with the flames of doom room and pulled the lever. Doing so killed me so i went back and got most of my stuff back (I think i only lost 4 copper and 1 silver pieces). Then i went to the area with the exit markers and went inside. The game then locked up on me while it tried to upload the next part of the first quest. Is this like an occasional glitch that comes with the game? Or is it a problem caused by my computer?

@SixApes,
Never thought you were harping me ^^ I just had the thought of what could've been written better in the review.

@Marquis Celt Dragon,
I can't help you on this one, as I didn't manage to complete the first quest. Got stuck at a part a bit earlier. This game might look easy, but it's not :P

@Marquis Celt Dragon.

You probably died on the first level ‘cause you walked in the flames. Why the game locked up –don’t know it works fine for me through WIN XP. I’m currently on the last map of the 1st quest playing as a knight. Thinking of restarting as a magic user.

Do any of you fellow Abandonia-nuts happen to have a walkthrough or strategy guide for this game? Completely stuck on the first level. Can get all the way through it, but no dice on actually completing it.

Hi!

This game says it has Windows XP, but I can't figure out how to make it work.
My computer is too old to run it with DosBox...

The first level is always one of the hardest. Anyone care post a link of their character login page? A llittle show and tell always gets the ball rolling.

I've included links to two of my highest level characters.

Newbie tips:
-Do not use those green and grey experience scrolls. Instead, sell them for 5 gold apiece.

-Search every nook and cranny. There is a very valuable Amethyst gemstone that sells for 2 platinum 5 gold hidden in an almost inaccessable area of the first level.

-To 'run' when using the keyboard, press and hold shift. Ctrl uses your current weapon, alt is to strafe. X is to jump. Space is to open doors/interact with objects. ESC is to abort mission at no expense to you. (You are returned to the state you were in just before entering the level).

-To quickly pop things into your inventory, hold shift and click on the item.

-Rogues can jump pretty high naturally.

-Food stacks to 3, potions to 3, (most) scrolls stack to 5.

-Secret doors and passages are EVERYWHERE.

-Enemies that cast homing spells are sometimes succeptable to their own tricks.

-Have fun! You rarely ever discover something new when you are frustrated as you tend to overlook key points.

Grynn: I've ran it on windows 95/98/ME, and there is no reason why it shouldn't run on XP. Perhaps it is an internal error, and not a compatability issue.

But these windows are all DOS based that's why it worked I think.
XP is not DOS based, so I suppose there must be another way to make it work...

If you are one of those people who like to lvl up and gain more money faster, there is a way to do so..........
the way is as follows......

Edit the files that are in the MPADESC directory....each of the files are named by quest###.ini. Edit those where it says gold and experience, then save it. For example, The first quest i have it give me 100000 gold and 1000000000 exp when i finished it.

When you do that, it will trick the game into giving you all that, but you will not get all that gold, but instead it gives you the max amount available, normally around 3000 to 6000 gold, which can be traded in for tons of platinum. You can either download these files and replace them, or tinker with it yourselves. Your choice.

My OrbitFiles (http://www.orbitfiles.com/download/Kingofhearts2199)

So far, i only have the quest files on there, but soon there will be the actual game there, so stay tuned.......

Also I'm pretty sure I've seen obsidian and pirynium breast plates before. Where are they?

I completed the WHOLE game, except the last 2 levels of the hardest questsaga.

Elmore's Retreat sounds familiar, but it's like 7 years ago i played this game.
I finally found it here, to redownload it, but now I got a Can't-play-DOS-games-on-windows-XP-problem :'(

Anybody knows a solution for this?:(

From what I understand you must be in the Pit Room. If you're stuck (because of closed door) then walk down into the center of the pit (this triggers the door-open sequence) and the walk the stairs up (be careful not to exit the wall-surrounded pit by front "exit" because it will close the door) and jump on the small wall that surrounds the pit. No walk right through the open door while still on the small wall. That's it.

Please, calm down, were the good guys :hypocrite: . here's what steps you need to do to run this game
1. download DosBox 0.65 (not 0.63 or else it will lag in third step), and, i'm not sure, but i think you need windows XP (at least i had those...)
2. run this game through DosBox ([mount c c:\AA enter] [c: enter] [AA enter], etc....)
3. turn CPU cycles on 14000 (ctrl F12 to increace by 500, ctrl F11 to decreace (differently, for example: if you have 100 cpu cycles, it may decreace 26, if you have 14000 cpu cycles, it may decreace by 1436...)) and run the game. a-simple ^_^ .

Or you can try setting cycles=auto and core=dynamic. Runs excellent on my CPU.

EDIT: During the first quest, just before the main exit from the second map, you find a parchment in which someone (probably the poor member of nearby body) mentions not to enter the grove at night because you may encounter a banshee. Well, you are a brave adventurer and a curious one, so you would probably want to ignore his warnings. Just wait until the game time reaches night hours and start the first quest. What's that? Wolves? Banshee? Ahhh...! :titan:

Hi guys I just started playing this game. Finished the Visions of Jugurtha Quest (the last druid was f***ing hard to beat, he got very strong poison). Currently I am slowly moving through the second quest (final map already, the one with 5 statues of knights in the water).

I hope somebody will be able to help me in the future if I get stuck - there's simply NOT A SINGLE ONE walkthrough for this game on the internet.

Falconis - nice screens! Did you hex edited your saves or was it through a normal gameplay?

EDIT:

Finally found the goddamn necklace. There were 3 doors in the labyrinth in the big room with teleporter fountain that I simply couldn't open. Just after beating this level it hit me that I could use the Knock spell. Was there anything worth behind them?

Oh well, on to Elmore's Retreat (6 maps ! WTF?!?)

BTW Zaru did you beat A&A?

EDIT 2:

Whoa, I am in the almost final quest (with Priam's soldiers) and how the hell do you kill the god at the end? I can't even run up to him and swing my sword at him - he is flying away from me, shooting deadly stone missiles that deal around 25 damage each.

Uh... anybody killed him? Help.

Borys

Phew, I beat the whole game. I did The Orb of Destruction quest before taking on the final map of The Lost City. The two dragons at the very end were a PITA to deal with but I managed to kill them fairly quickly using DiamondEdge, lots of Rejuvenation spells and one Scroll of Gain Mana (+100).

Here are my final stats. Note that I have beaten The Lost City quest after taking this screen - the damned wand was just lying next to the exit !!!

DOSBox under W2000.
Once it crashed right after I took a sack of gold, turned around and saw druids, that appeared after I took the gold. The other time when I was about to take some mace. So nothing much really. I was able to beat first 3 maps of the 1st quest. But the 4th is where this is happening. Maybe if I finish it quickly [i found the exit I think] it won't happen again in the future maps?

Also I experience some wierd holes in map design [sometimes I'm able to see through the walls]

I tried all connection types in dosbox but they still doesn't see each other.
I tried with F29 Retaliator, with same result.
I think my router block the communication or something...i tried to forward a port but it isn't helped.

Anyway who knows how can i kill Elmore in his quest in the 5th map?And how can i use his marks?
I finished the quest without killing him, but it's seems like i can't damage him, with any type of weapon, so how can i defeat him?

DOSShell is only one of several frontends for DOSBox.
Outdated one, at that - I sincerely doubt it would work well with the current version of DOSBox.

It's not difficult to learn how to operate DOSBox without frontends - if multi-purpose is your thing, you can set up a copy of Norton Commander within DOSBox itself, with 100% compatibility for every DOSBox version (the GUI was meant for the original DOS, but works perfectly fine with DOSBox).
Otherwise, you can create customized shortcuts and config files to start specific games or programs just by double-clicking on the shortcut. Been there, done that - it sounds more difficult than it is, and becomes quite easy after you set up five or so games that way (did it for over 70 myself).

Frontends provide a fool-proof user interface, but don't automagically make DOSBox better.
Everything a frontend can do with DOSBox configuration, you can do yourself with a little effort. To speed up DOSBox you first set the Core to Dynamic and Cycles to Max. Then you can change the output mode, set a lower fullscreen resolution (640x480 recommended), increase frameskip (frameskip=1 gives no practical difference, frameskip=2 or 3 might result in a slight choppiness of the graphics but will speed them up even more), disable scalers (for games that use a lower native resolution than 640x400 or 640x480, a Normal2x scaler is still neccesary) and disable some of the emulated sound devices (GUS, Tandy, Disney, MPU-401 and PC Speaker all can be disabled to save some CPU power).

Does anyone know how to finish last map of the wand quest? There's teleporter at the end, but where is the wand?

Also I'm pretty sure I've seen obsidian and pirynium breast plates before. Where are they?

I wouldn't be able to recall that, but I do recall the location of the even better Adamantium Armourset, it has 80% protection... Since I have no reason to spoil it's location, I'll give a hint. It's on the Orb of Destruction, level 4.

Hey, guys

I seem to have run into a snag with the game. I have unpacked the .rar file that it came in to a new directory on the computer but DOSbox is unable to start the game (I can still enter setup). The readme file also says to install from disc, as the game will not work otherwise.

Any help? Anyone got a no cd patch? How did you get the game to run after downloading it from Abandonia/any other site?

Thanks.

It works for me. Now, don't say that you didn't execute the AA.BAT.

An error message would be helpful.

What the hell, last time I tried executing aa.bat, it have me an error message, something like 0x30 blah blah... and now it works just fine. Thanks for the quick reply regardless, I wasn't even hoping for an answer in an hour on a game this obscure :)

I'll be back.

The second level of Elmore's Retreat has the area with all the stone towers in the sort of pond, but the only doors I have found are: 1) a dead end, 2) locked, I tried knock, didn't work, and 3) across a bridge I can't raise. So what do I do? I've been sitting around shooting Earth Smites at the mages but I'm still stuck.

If anyone knows how to launch it in multiplayer mode and has actually connected to another PC, please let me know. I'll be glad to play with someone in this great, overlooked game.

Found that if you're fast, it's possible to finish the last quest of the game at level 1 (Note it helps to play as a faster-moving class with more health, and you'll need to have played the level before to know what you're doing):

First level: Exit the starting room, go right and into the warp door that leads you to near where you can get Vindicator. From here, go left (you'll cross a staircase and throne room in the process) and open the door near the water. To your direct right, go through the door, run past the death knight, through the next door into the open area with the end-of-level orbs, and open the door and run past the warlock.

Second level: Use the secret door on the opposite site of the room with the four elf archers and run along the long corridor (you'll need to push past an elf near the middle point), then cross across the U-shaped room and open the secret door. In the large slippery area, look around on the left side of the wall until you find the level exit.

Third level: Run forward, past the room with the four elf archers, turn right, navigate through the black octagonal pillars and take the elevator up to the room with the giant yellow archer. Walk on the raised platform in the center of the room, then run back to the area where the four elf archers were - the door opposite of the room they're in will be open. Press the switch on the left side of the room (you will likely need to heal a few times here) and then run back to where the yellow archer is and exit.

Fourth level: Enter the big area where the gryphons and a large central water area is; cross to the left side at the bottom of the balcony area with the warlocks. Go through a series of unlocked doors until you find a room with sea monsters in lava in the corner; jump over the monsters, take the giant key, go back the way you came and open the locked door.

Fifth level: This one takes a few tries over and is pretty frustrating. In the area with the sea monsters, edge along the right and left sides and use the elevators to activate the switches, then go into the huge open lava-like area and take the elevator up. Equip the regeneration ring, flight amulet, and take the healing potion. Lure the two dragons away from the cave that's opened up (you will need to zigzag a lot and make sure they don't get close as they move faster than you can at this point if they're trying to melee you), then go left inside the cave.

Hug the right wall until you reach an area with a lava waterfall (drink one of the red potions and take the two white potions on the right side alcove), then take the cave on the other side of the room to reach the treasure room that contains the orb. You'll need to take both the orb and the green key, but there's two dragons in the room so you'll need to fly in circles around the bottom of the room until the dragons are far away enough that you can get the time to pick up the orb and the key. You'll likely burn several potions here.

Now return to where the other two dragons were (you'll likely need to push past one, or both, of them) and quickly activate the grey block wall on the right side of the cave mouth which will open up. Use the switch to lower the diamonds and amulets, heal up, 'hold' the green amulet (which makes you take only small amounts of damage from the dragon fireballs), then push past the dragons again and enter the central path then step on the purple teleporter to finish the game.

This can be somewhat useful to test out other character types quickly as they'll instantly level to level 6, get the arguably most useful amulet and sword in the game (that I know of) and get around 100 platinum in gold from selling items assuming you collect the bare minimum equipment.

Also, can anyone list the various secret items that are easily missed? I found a "small bouncy ball" on one level and a pair of Pyrinium platemail legs in secretish places, for example.

The code is pretty simple but vague - the t-like shape stands for any vowel, the ] is a space and the colon-like shape stands for "E then a space" or in one case, apparently "A then a space".

After a test-run or F1 contemplation to know control, it was fun. This included dosbox commands (if config tool -writeconf does not work on a Linux) like cycles=14500, scaler=hq3x, memsize=128, fullscreen=true, fulldouble=true and using xgamma to make all my Linux brighter... the textures are a bit tricky indeed. Ouch, its an eye-killer! Great characters and level-ups though... I really sold my wand before trying knights of Saint Andrew... citizens. ;-)

I am mostly in LOVE with First person RPG's. Now while I did play fallout 1 and 2 first, Fallout 3 Set me straight on what was the best perspectives to see from in an RPG. (though I did like the good 3rd person camera as well) Many of the RPG's I love are in this perspective, and I am constantly searching for old ones that can run on Windows or DOSBOX. So far I have found 2, which is System Shock 2 (it may be part FPS but it still is awesome) for windows and for DOSBOX was this one (I tried out Elder Scrolls Arena, and I hated it... it ran so slow I couldn't get past the cell area). My only problems with it are that you must equip an item before using it, and that when I do auto-select in the setup to allow the sound to work, I can't hear a thing. Can someone help me with my sound problems?

Hey, nice! :) A&A deserves a lot more attention that it got, and a forum is a nice place to bring the community together. BTW, do you know about leileilol's Unofficial Amulets & Armor Shrine (http://leileilol.mancubus.net/amulets/)?

[Edit] Ahh, seeing how you link to the site in the downloads section, you do ;)

Well. Started playing this game (Nov 2011). The first confusing thing when starting is the fact that I get overburdened carrying things in the first 10 minutes. Can you go back to the shop at any time? Or only when you finish a quest? Then I went into a room with lots of barrels. Jumped over a counter and found a sword, but I am stuck behind the counter and cannot get out!!!

Aaarggh. I fell into the river on the first level, got washed downstream. Found an area with a couple of elves and some great treasure, but can't find a way to get back or out???? Are there any walkthroughs anywhere?

I took a quick install and a peek, so some info:
- you can't save or go to town while questing
- I think you can go back after the river smashed you if you RUN (hold shift).
- the way out is marked with 2 crystal balls (hidden by trees, but they are there). The door is closed until you finish the quest objective (aquiring the Book of Visions) I guess.

Some tips:
magic system is annoying. You won't be a battlemage, so either go some kind of priest (they have some healing spells and an "open door" spell), or just use the Knight for melee damage. Ranged weapons sound nice, but they use ammunition, what I'd not trust.
The food-system seems silly as I've found plenty of food (but no water).
Identify items is a built-in ability what incrises by leveling up. I don't know what other results levellin has.
To know wether a piece of armor worth it or not just try to wear it and watch the statistics.
I have no idea how to tell which weapon is better.

Aaarggh. I fell into the river on the first level, got washed downstream. Found an area with a couple of elves and some great treasure, but can't find a way to get back or out????

Here is the solution:
Before starting the quest buy a Potion of Waterwalking (costs 2 Gold in the Store, too bad you can't afford the Ring of Waterwalking from the Bank). Let the river wash you down, get the items (there is a note, a crossbow, a scroll what gives 1500 exp and more, so it worth the 2 Gold), shoot down the elf on the other side (he is on an unreachable platform, but worth exp), then drink the potion you bought, and walk back.
The potion's duration is ca. 1 minute.

I can't offer a walkthrough (not even a guide exist anywhere), but here are some tip about character-creation:
- you can only choose the class. You can't even change the portrait. The class determines the starting equipment (food, scrolls, potions, weapon, armor) and inventory of shops.
- all class has the same amount of statpoints (what you can't modify), except the Citizen, who has 20 more points.
- stealth is a useless stat, and magic is difficult to use.
- only the Knight has special ability (higher melee damage). The Knight also starts with chain equipment instead of leather (and he also has helm). The archer starts with a bow and lots of arrows (still limited resource and weak damage) along a melee weapon. The rogue, the mercenary and the magician starts with "thieving tools" (no idea what it does, looks like lockpick).
- health seems to regenerate.
- food and water can't be sold in shop.
- you wear gloves on both of your hands!
- you can check your stats, equipment etc. during pause.

From sheer curiosity I finished the first level of this game. So some final tips (if I'll have other things to report, I'll open a topic in the Gaming Zone):

- You can go to town (shop) / save at every level's (called "map" by the game) end. The first quest has 5 maps.
- Time is not running while you are in town.
- Whatever you do in town is automatically saved.
- If you hit Esc twice you quit from the current part of the mission. This equalls with a reload. A good trick is to keep the "identify all" scroll from the starting equipment, kill all opponent on the level, go back for all items, finish the level, start a new level, use the identify scroll, check all your new belongings, then abort mission, and sell all things you don't need.
- The consequence of death is loosing all the money you have on you.
- During the first map it is random from the elves to drop either a copper or a quiver. For each quiver you get 1 silver(!) in the shop.
- Corpses decay, items do not.
- Poison is not that big of a problem. But at the final switch beware, the pedestal of fire is dangerous.

Awesome. Thanks for the tips and advice.

Incidentally, after I shot the elf on the other side, I managed to jump across at the point where the river comes out of the gorge!!!

Found anything good? Healing potions, scrolls and armor / weapon pieces worth good, so I'd be interrested (I'd prefer to buy the two movement-enchancing rings as soon as possible).

I haven't been able to finish the first quest completely yet, But I have learned a few things.

-apparently food meter affects health regen, and water affects mana.

-the rouge jumps exceptionally high, and runs faster. As a result the effect of overburdening is less noticable

-For some reason you can't sell runes, so if you can't use them pitch em.

-As far as I can tell there is no reason not to store all your money in the bank.

-It is easier to hit with swiping weapons, (Swords and axes) than with stabbing ones like the knife or staff.

-The thieves tools let you steal things from enemies that don't know your there, sneak up behind and attack with it. You might get money.

-You can sell mushrooms, Hoard the useless things and cash in.

Mushrooms are far from useless, although an oddity. Each gives 5 mana on the cost of 5 health.

Btw, thx for the tip on the rogue. Now we know 2 class' special ability!

Also thx for clearing the issue of sneak and thieving tools.
