THIS is OLD
I have played some text based games before, and they can actually be fun. You'll need a little patiance though, so you can get into the plot. :)

I have never played an all text adventure but I can imagine it can be difficult to play through. All the things you need to remember.

They aren't too hard once you learn the basic commands. The biggest difference is having to picture each location in your mind instead of having it animated for you on the screen. This is actually one of the things I like about this type of game; it's similar to the difference between reading a book and watching the movie version. With the book you are free to use your imagination and see things how you think they should look, and it's also more realistic because you can picture it as a real life location rather than a cartoon style drawing.
Other than that it's pretty much like any other adventure game. You can view your inventory at any time or type the look command to get a description of where you are. Some people prefer to make a map as they go along so they don't get lost so easily, but I always found that too distracting. Aside from being on the Enterprise in the beginning this game takes place in a single location so it's not too difficult to learn it. Some text adventure games will drive you crazy though, especially when they have mazes in them. I don't even like mazes in graphical adventures.
In the review I mentioned that there were two games in this series, but I just found out that there were actually three. A year after The Kobayashi Alternative came the third and final in the series, First Contact. I've never played it but the reviews all seem to agree that it's the best of the trio. So if you liked this game you may want to check it out as well. :)

It's like playing a MUD.

I proposed an interesting text game some time ago, but people said they wanted graphics in games <_<
Hope this opens a new way.

commands in text games aren't too tough. There are the basics:
LOOK
EXAMINE
GET
TAKE
WEAR
To move around is easy too.
NORTH
SOUTH
WEST
EAST
UP
DOWN
IN
OUT
ENTER
EXIT
I played this game when I was a kid - if I remember it's a unique game as far as interacting with people.
For example, most text games have you say "tell Scotty beam me up"
If I remember this one had you say "Scotty, beam me up."
So in the beginning (I'm really stretchin' the memory here) you'll be on the bridge.
WAIT a few turns, you'll get attacked.
When Spock gets on the bridge, tell him to ANALYZE the sensor readings.
They'll figure out there's a ghost image of a klingon ship. FIRE AT (whatever they call the ghost image)
and so forth.

The standard adventure game commands I know. Those are easy. The hard bit is the Star Trek-specific commands. The only ones I've figured out so far are "Sulu, raise shields" and "Berryman, analyze attacker". And I only know the first one because I looked closely at the screenshot. And the second one doesn't work, because Berryman is a scared little retard. I THINK I need to get Uhura to call Spock and tell him to get his Vulcan arse to the bridge, but Uhura, talk to Spock, Uhura, call spock, uhura, tell spock, and uhura, for God's sake get Spock on the line before we all die doesn't work.

Totally seconding this request for help, here. 'Sulu, for god's sake do something' doesn't help me very much. Gamefaqs doesn't even have a walkthrough from which I could draw the appropriate Trekkie commands, either.

Well, whaddya know. I make a post, spend two seconds on Google, and BAM, walkthrough. Turns out the appropriate response is 'Kirk to Spock'. Praise be unto the Information Age!

game walkthrough
(will register soon as gallefray)
text based games are my favorite games as
they are just like books , being home schooled i want to
keep my imagination in excellent order not boxed up
and thrown down a canyon !
(they are good for spelling lessons!)
i will release a text based game soon, i will premier it on abandonia first , then i will publish it officialy. and make a whole seiries (< oops spelling mistake ! )
it is called amnesia adventure and will first be released on
inform 7. But as i get adept at the different sytems I will put it on other sytems after that.
