View Full Version : I Need Help With Ufo - Enemy Unknown
When I play UFO, the game crashes almost after every mission ( When it should return to the world screen ). I remember playing it on my old PC - the game was also downloaded from abandonia - it was just fine. And that was a realy old win 95 configuration. The machine I've got now should be able to lift agame like that with it's tail. But it only should, and it doesn't. Maybe it's because of XP ? Tried to change the resolution, then I downloaded it again, but it's still the same. Now to play it I have to make saves realy very often 'cause no one can tell when some mission will end, and that's really annoying. Could anyone tell me how to fix this ? I tried to search for an answer in the games discussion, but it's such a long thread - the longest it is ... I will be very greatefull. X-Com is one of the best games ever !

You should find a DOS version and try to run it in DOSBox. It should work fine that way. :)
If this is a windows wersion of X-Com why doesn't it run fine on windows XP ?

It does. One of the .exes works perfectly. Bugs were just a huge pain in the arse from the start of UFO : Enemy Unknown.

I know I asked this question many times, but can our version on the site be replaced with DOS version???

Yeah, I run the DOS version on DOSBox and have no problems :)
Though I also don't get any problems with the Windows version, guess I'm just lucky :P
Hmm. One of txe executables ( UFO Defence ) loads but the graphcs are compleatly out of order - screen flickers, so it's quite useless and the other one is the one that I am running the game with and complaining that crashes. Yes, there is a bug somewere, I guess the problem is in the compatibility betweeen graphic/video aplications in the system and the game itself, not sure because I don't have the expertise about this so I dont know. Anyhow I've downloaded the dos version of X-Com from another site as you suggested me and it works fine in DOSbox ( thanks Eagle of Fire ).
And regarding the previous post

I agree but think that Abandonia should have both versions of X-Com and offer the win version first, but for those who can't run it properly there should be an alternative link for DOS-version
Thanks again fellows and sorry if I bothered you

Check the top right corner on the fornt page (Abandonia (http://www.abandonia.com))
You'll see that this web site is dedicated to old DOS games. :sneaky:  LOL
WindowZ is alternative here. LOL LOL
And you have a windows version of X-Com
Then perhaps you should make DOS version the first option and the present an alternative.
I don't know. Guess both of them are useful

What are the differences between the two? (apart from the obvious dos/windows) I thought that the windows has bugs fixed where the dos one still many more?

There is absolutly no difference except that the Windows version is already patched, thus a little less buggy. But there is the very same patch for the DOS version too.
I myself don't play patched because the latest patches for UFO scramble the sounds. I never found those "bugs" annoying enough to get over that.
