Just come a little closer... I'm ready! :butcher: :hammer: :whip:

But seriously, I'm glad you like the games - hope it was worth the wait (I know people get really worried if they don't get their daily update :D ).

Oh and the Journals are in the extras (for every game). Just make sure you count the words carefully (the title of the section also countrs) - example:
#3 / 6 / page 27
How to fight
You choose the icon...

The would be the security code

Roffle, I thought that too. I saw the picture and was all "Oh...reallly..? Sure :D " And then rememberd I was at my computer, grinning at pixels...Anyways, excellent update. Heh, Honestly I didn't even think the servers were having problems or anything. I was thinking "Hm, long wait, no updates..Heeee!! Must be something big coming. *excited*. then I saw these updates and thought I was right! .....Until I read the servers were down...

And it seems that Sebatianos has missed an important feature of goldbox games (I read the champions of krynn and deathknights of krynn reviews as well and it seemed to have been overlooked); that when you make your characters and then at the menu that you add them together to create a party, you have to option to modify their attributes. No need to keep "rerolling" the stats when creating a character. There are limitations though, you can only modify them at this point at the very beginning before you start to actually play the game, and you can only do it once.

This goes for pretty much every game in the gold box series of SSI games.

As for what I always play in the this series, (champions, deathknights, dark queen), I make the following party of five (all human, no premature level restrictions):

Knight
Knight
Cleric
Thief
Mage

The look and feel of this game (according to what I saw on the reviews and screenshots) is Great!
But I wonder if it is possible to look up the codes in the journal..
With my Mozilla Browser, I didn't see page-breaks or page numbers in the document itself.
I'd very like to play this game, but wanna know "for sure" not to get stuck on that codes at the moment I'm really involved!
Anybody a clue?
Thanks in advance!

Unfortunately there aren't any page breaks, but you need to refer to the Journal Entries. Here's an example:
Word #6, journal entry 66, page 28:
Journal Entry 66
The Grathanich

You quickly retrieve the small oblong box from behind the mirror.* The
box contains an oddly-shaped piece of gray stone, plain and unadorned,
yet seeming to pulsate with hidden power.

The word would be THE.

Stuff you don't want to do: Use the fire touch spell on this guy, it negates his dragonlance status. Don't remove curse on him, you can't put his miracle gear back on. Don't equip the eyes of petrification (duh).

Silver shields have the chance of reflecting back gaze attacks (like bassilicks and medusas use to turn to stone). Fun things to have equipped when fighting those types of monsters. I forget if they're in this game, but they sure are in pools of darkness.

In order to make your stats as good as his (http://s13.invisionfree.com/Blast14works2/index.php?act=Attach&type=post&id=108113) you need to find the editor. For some reason or another I can't put it on my forum, so you will have to go out and find it for yourself. If you make your own editor I would like to know :woot:

I used to own this game back in the day and LOVED it! When I found it on an abandonware site, I was thrilled. But since I don't have the manual anymore, I was constantly searching through the text files to find the answers to the security questions (ex. "On page 13, what is the fifth word after the heading CHARACTER CLASSES"). Looking up that kind of stuff in a text editor takes forever because the page numbers in the text file don't correspond to the page numbers of the original manual. I got sick of it so I wrote a simple program to instantly display any page number. You type in 10, it instantly jumps to page 10 in the manual. As a second though, I added another option to instantly look up any journal entry. I include the source code if anyone cares.

The other way to fix that (and for all chapters of Krynn) is to change the directory in .config file. Using notepad then add the directory C:\ will help you start this game easier by draging START.exe to dosbox directry and will fix any problem occuring from wrong location...

No need to type "mount" any more :OK:

I just downloaded this game, but it doesn't seem to be working. There doesn't seem to be much activity on the board right now, so I'll keep muddling by myself meanwhile.

The game is installed in D:\Program Files\Games\Dark Queen of Krynn. Whenever I try to change any settings, I can't. I wanted to set it to anything other than PC speaker, but it's a no-go. Apparently, it needs to reinstall itself for that. So...

I put the files from the DISK folders from the zip file onto a trio of floppy disks, mounted both d: and a: in DOSBOX and tried it again, but it said the disk wasn't the right one...

I have no doubt that someone will correct me by pointing out something obvious that I missed, and as embarassing as that is, I will still be very greatful for it! This game looks good and I want to play it, but so far no luck...

blastradius14

This is what you should do with Dos-box

Ok, make a folder and copy both floppies to it. Now, mount this as your A: drive.

Install it to someplace with a really short name, like C:/oldgames/DQK.

Now, just run it in dos-box. Should work just fine.

To be more specific, when the planet mirror is "downloading in progress" the error comes up during the transfer.

I downloaded the other .PDFs to the other "gold box" games with no issues.

Any help with this would be appreciated, though I understand people only hit up this forum every 2 years or so... ;)

I had DQoK on my old mac. All the sound instalation choices sound different from my PC than the Mac. I can understand hardware differences, but is there a way so that sounds and music can be played like my mac played them? Of all the choices, none of them sound nearly as good as my old macintosh did

Am I screwed or might there be a chance? I'm using DOS Box to play (I get no sound regardless if I just open it through windows).

I also tried to get the cluebook. After installing the new adobe reader and trying to download the cluebook, I got the message that the file is damaged and that adobe couldn't repair the file.

I have searched all over the net and I can't find the cluebook anywhere for free except planet mirror.

I am hung up in the Luminari Tower and I can't find the true entrance to the top. I have made it to the false door, but I can't find the true entrance.

If anybody has any ideas, please help a lost ranger!

Well, I had to dig around the net for a clue to the Luminari Tower.

That is a dirty trick those programmers used to get to the final door. If I hadn't gotten the clue from the net, I would still be stomping around on level 9 thinking that it was there.

From the review: "Oddly enough, you can only add characters from Death Knights of Krynn (the second game) and not from the first game Champions of Krynn."

The beauty of the Gold Box AD&D games is that they encourage you to play them in order. Together, they tell a story. It is very advantageous to start from the beginning of the series and play through to the end with the same set of characters, rather than generating a new set for each scenario.

The game treats the party of characters as if it were progressing in real time. Therefore, it would not make sense for them to somehow jump from episode 1 to episode 3.

I hope that explains the logic behind this method.

I seem to remember certain classes having level limitations but I can't seem to find information on this in any of the manuals.

From what I recall elves have a fighter cap at 14 and kender has one around 10. But i know they are not restricted on advancements as thieves but do they as clerics?

I want to try and avoic hitting the caps so my characters can continue to grow.

I was thinking of a knight or two and keeping my cleric/thief kender if the kender doesn't hit a level cap.

anyone know the restrictions on level advancement for the elves, kender and dwarf?

thanks

kmonster
01-02-2007, 01:06 AM
The level caps are in the manual.

IIRC:

Qualinesti can get 14 fighter levels while Silvanesti only 10, but ranger, cleric and mage progression is uncapped for both them.
Kender clerics are capped at level 12 but since pure thieves are crap multiclassing with cleric is still better. (better armor, free spells)
Dwarves are capped quite early in all classes but fighters, so better take only human knights with stats high enough to become knights of the rose.

Guest
01-02-2007, 08:56 PM
i hate all these level caps. :wallbash:

But still its worth it to play the game. So hmmm, i'll take 2 human knights, a Q-elf white mage, that leaves 3 more. The two knights should provide decent healing when they are high enough level and of the Rose.
But another cleric. I can go with a Q-elf cleric/ranger or a Q -elf Cleric/mage or the kender cleric/thief.
I'd like a kender I think but I think the only good way to go with one in this game may be a cleric/thief.

Of course I could skip the kender and go with a Q-elf Mage/thief.

decisions :(

This game is megga tuff guys!
In high school me and my buddy finished Champs then Death knights and worked our way finally into Dark Queen, where I must add that neither one of us finished it.

Dark Queen doesn't have many areas where they're are maps, which is one of the frustrations!

I carried over my guys from Death Knights and brought over two Mace +4, two long sword +3, one long sword +4, dragonlance, shield +4, some scrolls and a plate mail +4
a few others to which helps.

I'm in the caves now and I hate those auraks.
For dark wizards can you outlast there spell protections by waiting around a corner and passing on your turn?

Hi cremz glad to meet you!

Well I just finished the caves actually and I entered nauldis, the underwater place is what i mean if i spelt that wrong.

I both like/hate this place. I get frustrated with places that dont give maps. I always end up finding the safe hall by accident. This time I havnt even found it by accident I stumbling around and i'm trying with the compass to go in the right direction. So I started wondering off and all I can say is that it tells me i'm in "Lyzian's Great Hall" I could really use a map since its probably not i the adandonia's journal.

Or good directions :w00t:

THANKS! :ok:

Although it's probably too late for you this game, there is no point in going from Sword Knight to Rose Knight. Exact same spell progression with much less xp to reach if you are a Knight of the Sword. There is a *small* reduction in the number of times you can personally control npcs (rather than the computer), but it's not worth the fact that you'll get much higher level much quicker.

Also, ranger/clerics ROCK. Great fighting, great spells.

Killing Dark Wizards: best way by far is Cone of Cold (or Power Word-Kill once you get high enough). For any spellcaster, just remember that if you manage to damage them, they can't cast a spell that round. So rather than necessarily killing all the Auraks just make sure you damage them each round so they don't start tossing lightning bolts at you.

And underwater, fireball doesn't work, but lightning bolt changes to become a smaller fireball (same radius as ice storm). If you get a chance to rest, drop all your fire spells and replace them for the duration of the underwater portion.

I love this game, beaten it like 10 times since high school.

And for any other long-time players out there - know of any mods that can allow us to play black-robe mages, or access to the reversible cleric spells the game tosses at us (poison, slay living, harm, destruction)?

I thought I found one a couple of years ago, but before I tried it I accidently deleted it and can't find it again.

I don't consider it too late in the game cause they havnt gone up a level yet, at least not my knights. When they went up they went from level 11 to level 9.

So I think I will remake them, it will be better in the long run and transfer over the items they have.

As for Cleric/Rangers i love them to! great blend! I got a half-elf cleric/ranger in my party and a dwarf fighter thats level 13 now.

Years ago I took a single class red mage to level 40 just for the fun of it. Never could finish Aurim i think it was with the damn bells. I couldn't find my way around inside there.

Thanks for the tips. Four of my characters have composite long bow +2 with +2 arrows

i dont know of any mods for evil characters, that would be fun. But i'm pretty sure any cleric can get slay living.

THANKS! :ok:

[/b]

Ok, have you already fetched a new hinge for the broken door at one of the safe halls? If you did all you need to do now is to retrieve the sea dragon eggs to stop the attacks. I'm not that good in giving directions but here goes:

- From any of the great hall, you just have to find a way to get to the East, to the outer defense. Then move South and you will reach a double fort door. Move all the way South to another double fort door. Past this fort door will leads to the passageway. Save your game here cause if I'm not mistaken you can't rest anywhere after that. A good idea will be to make sure the passageway as encounter free. If not, reload.

- The passageway leads all to the way the old Celanost ruins. Once you are in Celanost ruins, move South pass the archway, sticking to the walls on the west. Enters the archway by moving west. From here, you have to move W, N, N, E(pass the door), N, N, N, W, W, N, N and enters through the door at your left side. Enters through the air pocket and use the Crylokon.

- Then follows the hallway until you see a large hall. Head south and you will see a door on your left and prepare to ambush the sahuagin. So instead they ambush you, you ambush them haha..sweet, right?

- After the battle, move West and you will enters the chambers of the rogue mages. Search the room to reveals a wand, conspiracy notes. Head North, enters the hallway and you will come true another door. You will see a door on your North. I remember this is a one heck of a major battle. Lets ambush them again! by making a slight detour to East and to the North. Smash through the window and ambush them! After the battle, you will have to search the well the fire creatures are guarding and haul up all the dragon eggs.

-Retrace your steps and an army of sea dragons will stop you. Pass them the eggs and OMG, finally we can relax now.

Hope it helps and this all you need to complete the stage. I find this part the hardest as wandering is extremely hazardous to the health, thanks to the wonderful sea dragons. And the fact there is really no place to rest. Prince Lyzian will award you with a footman's dragonlance. You can spawn this by exporting/importing your char. I kind of forgotten how to do it but spawning an additional one is highly recommended. Two warriors with dragonlance and 3 attacks/round will make any future dragon mob a swift and easy one...heh.

I need your help again cremz

In the lighthouse, i've been looking over 2 walkthroughs for the game, i cant seem to find another thats helpful.

It says to ascent to the 8th floor and turn off the teleporter system then fall down the pit and climb up. When its off I'm able to find another hidden transporter system on the 1st floor.

Here's the problem. I can find the hidden portal after coming up from the garbage shoot. And I can climb all the way up to the 9th floor where i cant go any further. I excepted that so no biggy.

But when i move around in level 8 i always go in circles. I find no thingy to turn off at all and the pits in the damn way.

Also there seems to be something on the floor that drops me down to where the vortex is on the 5th floor without any warning given at all.

HELP! :sos: :tai: :wallbash: :sos:
thanks

since you are going in circles, I am assuming the teleporter is still on LOL...

ok from lvl 8 stairs down to lvl 7...move E,S,S,E,E,S,E,E,E,N,W all the way and open up the door to lvl 9

on lvl 9, move E,south all the way, west all the way, go north all the way until you see 2 doors, go in the south door and climb up to lvl 10.

on lvl 10, move E, S S W N W W W N E N E E TO THE STAIRS..attempt the false door at lvl 11...go back to lvl 10 and move W S W S and you will meet a woman...after that find a pit and go suicide :P

if you jump down still alive and kicking, run W UNTIL YOU see an archway on your left, follow the hallway until you see another arch on your right, get into the archway. Remember to check your compass as you progress along here as you will be given a 180 degrees turn. you should stay W, pass the archway, go south, then east, then south and enters through the secret door on your right or W. The teleporter will teleports you to lvl 11.

btw, the directions are a bit complicated on the E E style LOL but its really needed to avoid some teleporters.

yeap theres a long sword +4 and bracers +4 on lvl 10 who appears only after you attempt the false door at lvl 11..well d'oh! ain't that a good way of forcing you to go all the way up only to jump all the way down...

okay i'm getting there *whew*

now i've turned the teleporter off that turned out to be on level 7
i've gone up and hit on the False Door on level 11
then went back down and foudn the elf girl and took her stuff

i fell down the pit, cant find anything down there so i climb up. Now i'm up in an enclosed space and a secret door is near that takes me back to level 1. I look around on the whole floor before going in the portal but i find nothing. I go in the portal, I go back to level one and i look around aimlessly for secret doors

i cant find the way to this dumb wizard AHHHH

what floor is this teleporter on? If i foudn the false door and the elf chick and fall down the pit do i then climb up, use the first teleporter and look around on the 1st floor for a second teleporter?

i can't find the hidden teleporter
i'm trying directions but...
:(

18-02-2007, 01:43 AM
When you fall off the pit, you should be at 1st deep at basement lvl 1. My directions are at first deep. I don't think you can turn off that teleporter cause its the only access to lvl 11. You should just keep falling, falling, falling until they said something you landed on a large pile of dirt.

Guest
18-02-2007, 08:26 PM
weird, i thought i turned it off before getting to level 11 but i guess it must have been on

anyway its off now
i wonder if thats why i cant find the teleporter

Guest
18-02-2007, 10:40 PM
Yeah the teleporter must have been on.

I redid the False door thing and went down to level 10 or 9 and went suicide down to the garbage pit that you can't go anywhere in. The square place where all the garbage and offal is where you land at.

Since I find nothing there I climb up. I get the messages of the mysterious elf chick "Under the porch...."

so as soon as i climb myself up i see the archway. One step in the wrong direction and i'm back down the pit. So I turn around to face West. If I turn north i think it is the secret door is there to take me back to ground level, maybe level 1? where the way I came into the lighthouse is. If I keep heading west its all the archways and what not which I went aimlessly around over and over and over trying to walk through walls and find secret doors to teleporters.

Since I find nothing I go through the secret door that that has the teleporter bringing me to ground level where another walkthrough said the teleporter was supposed to be near the entrance. I can't find it and when I headed west from climbing up I quickly reach a dead end.

I tried west at the VERY buttom through the dirt pile but since there is no hallways this must not be the place. So I tried climbing up and doing it that way and I noticed my map changed directions on me once but I still cant get it. I feel like a dolt and that its hopeless for me. Maybe there is some glitch, the same kinda one that made the saughlin not appear in the hamlet of hizden... :tai:

silz
20-02-2007, 01:21 AM
I must really suck in giving directions. I think its corridor heh. Anyway from the pit with the garbage, it should goes like this W W W S E E E S W W W W S E S W and enter the teleporter.

Guest
20-02-2007, 01:46 PM
I don't think its your directions cause when I followed them I came perfectly lined up with a corner in the wall that should have put me through the a fake door.

i'm getting the message from the elf repeating so i should have done everything leading up to what i have to do. But because the game screwed up with the Sahoaglin creatures in hizden i think it screwed up here.

The directions work well, I take them where all the garbage is, which makes sense cause the woman says "under the porch" so I can figure under level 1 now.

Now I've saved it right at level 7.

And I have tried it with the portal on and with the portal off and I've tried it with search on and with search off. I figure the teleporter has to be on anyway so I can teleport up there........

its looking like i may have to start a new game, what do you think?

silz
21-02-2007, 09:00 AM
Ok, I'm sorry I completely screwed up. The pile of garbage where you first landed was actually 2nd deep. Main reason why a fake door is not present in the first place. I forgot that the pits goes all the way down to 2nd deep but I've presume that it stops at 1st deep. You have to climb up the pit that will leads you to 1st deep. Then from 1st deep (right after you climb out of the pit), it should goes like this. W W W S S E E E S W W W W S E S W.

Rob

thanks again cremz! I owe ya one. I'm making a little headway now just restarted the game yesterday but with my old party. I just finished the lighthouse 5 mins ago.

I got 2 level 12 knights of the sword
a level 18 dwarf fighter
a level 12/11 half-elf ranger/cleric
lvl 12/12 Q-elf cleric/white mage
and a level 17 Q-elf red mage :)

I will soon have 4 characters with powerful healing magic and some of offensive magic and muscle to
lack of thief but when i need one i will bring one in for that spot.

I may need your help again. When I played this 12 years ago it was either hawkbuff or new aurium i got really messed up in. I think the place with bells going off all the time i couldnt find my way around in there.
The online walkthroughs are so great. I'd re-write my own but this game is so old now t I don't know if it'd be so worth while

thanks

This is what you should do with Dos-box

Ok, make a folder and copy both floppies to it. Now, mount this as your A: drive.

Install it to someplace with a really short name, like C:/oldgames/DQK.

Now, just run it in dos-box. Should work just fine.

I tried that and got a bad checksum error message. What am I doing wrong here?

I assume you have already mounted your D:\Dosgames directory as the C drive in DosBox. If not:
mount C D:\Dosgames

Put stuff from all floppies into a single directory.
Then mount that directory in DosBox as the A drive using MOUNT command:
mount a (insert the path to that directory here)

Enter A: to change to that directory and install the game to the virtual "C drive" (which in reality is your D:\Dosgames directory)

Does anyone here know how with this file to get Sound Blaster sound?

I feel dumb but i just realised all the sound was coming out of the pc, i just figured it was old and not as good.

I looked at the install file after the zip file unpacked itself of DQK and its defaulted to PC sound. Can I reinstall?

Maybe i could try that

I followed the directions and it give me an error "could not write C:\DQK\disk1\dqk.cfg(-9)"

what I did was mount c d:/oldgames followed by mount a d:/oldgames/dqok

First unrar your game in your d:\oldgames directory, then create folder like dqk. Now put all your darkqueen folder stuff in that dqk folder (just copy paste)

Then do this in dosbox: mount c d:\oldgames (enter) mount a d:\oldgames\dqk (enter) then go to station A aka a: (enter) and write install.

I hope i gave you right instructions

I can't remember whether this game had SB sound..
Where's your Soundblaster? It's usually at 220h or 388h. Are you using Dosbox? If not, it's just a matter of configuring your autoexec.bat to include a SET BLASTER line and also a SET SOUND if you're using a card that needs special drivers.

Oh I figured it out. I went to the dqk install file and it was defaulted to PC sound, miracously it let me do a reinstall even though it wanted to look for the install files on a floppy drive. I reselected Sb sound for music and effects and saved it and reinstalled. Now its a lot better.

Yes, that works finally! Thanks.

WooHooo!

alright then Cremz were both in the game now with sound blaster sound!

I'm sure it won't be long before you catch up to where I am at. I accidently saved over my game so I have to start New Aurim over i think.

I will probably start playing again Monday night cause thats when my weekend starts.

well i'm in New Aurim. The walkthrough tells me to go to the dungeons, which I assume is below...

I'm walking around, navigating seems to be quite a bit easier than I remembered but so far I've only found stairs that go up.

I'm assuming i have to go down to get the 'recruits' and to destroy that gong that keeps going off.

Haha sure. Can you pass me the footman's dragonlance that was awarded from Prince Lyzian? I am gonna duplicate it for both my knight and warrior. It will help make my game easier LOL.

Cremz, your cluebook there what does it say about New Aurim?

I was told in a walkthrough to go down to the dungeon after getting told by thenols to get recruits in the dungeon. When I go down the draconians tell me i have to head straight down to my destination no pit stops.

I turned around i dunno why and they flipped out and after that i had to head back

now they want to attack me so i guess i have to start new aurium over again

Is there anyone else that gets seriously peeved at certain things in this game ?

New Aurim when your transporting the recruits

Take a step forward, "draconians trample behind you" press enter, step forward, "draconians trample behind you" press enter, step forward, "draconians trample behind you" press enter, step forward, "draconians trample behind you" press enter,

OK I GET IT, I GET IT ALRIGHT!?!? there behind me stop telling me and slowing me down! #$^&$# you!

and the gong step, step "the gong goes off somewhere below," press enter, every 3 steps

Yeah it gets pretty frustrated at times. Which level are you in now? The bad guys are doing a ritual where there are corrupting the good dragon eggs into evil smelly draconians. So each time they did the trample action, you are bound to hear it because there are gazilions of draconians gathering at that spot.

Rob

i hope that dont screw things up much.

so now i'm in Hawkbuff, farthest i've been. Played around in there years ago just to look around. Its a mapping nightmare!

I don't map things out on paper but i got the clue book to work.

Its still a nightmare! Its a friggen Architechtural nightmare

i think i'm going to make it to the end this time, Hawkbuff turned out to be a lot easier than expected. Just grab Davik and tell him to take you the Senate and all of a sudden your fighting a few battles and its done. So i just got B'ior and Blackwater glade and then the towers

I am at the Draconian caves. I've played through this game numerous time already because I discovered a cheat factor in the gnome area. I replayed many times at lvl 40 since this is the only high level AD&D games back then. I realized their spells are a little limited compared with BGII heh. Anyway turn-based games has their pluses. Have you played Temple of Elemental Evil yet? That is a great game too.

Rob

Good to hear from you again Cremz. Years ago i pushed a red mage to level 40 by repetetious battles.

This time around though was just a straight push to the end.
I got my 2 knights up to level 18 and my red mage ended up level 24.
Several characters are ready to level up but they can't because i'm in the Tower of Flame.

Finally there, could have won by now but been playing a day or two then a day or two off. I tell you, that draconian battle on level 3 of the tower is VERY HARD. I'm not cheating this time around but i have a boat load of goodies.

Did you guys know that you can get your AC up to 20
My knight has an dex of 17 so maybe 21 is even possible
put on the helm +3, solamic plate, shield +4, ring +4 and you'll get it! =)

Anyway that draconian battle I found 9 enchanted draconians on one side and at least 8 more on the other. They just love delay blast fireball and exploded and zapping you when you hit them and closing in on you so you have to hit them. Then when your doing well and think you've won....WAIT disinegrate one or two of yoru best characters so that your really forced to start over. Cause thats what that does really, i mean who wants to make a new characters with starter gear?

Rob
08-03-2007, 02:15 AM
well I finally beat this crazy game guys

Tiamat the five headed dragon was crazy

oh walkthroughs saying "oh if you cast head before you should beat him no problem" ahhh never once i get first attack and nothing to protect me from his many assaults.

I have to say that fight is extremely unfair. No matter how many times i do the fight one or two of my elves are always killed, as in dead and no more firin arrows and casting pretty spells. So i had to live with it.

i moved on and during the celebration and a completley unrealistic battle occurs where i fight somewhere between 22-25 adult dragons.
pust have been at least 5 of each color except only 2 or 3 white, the weakest color at that

i survived only because i had cast haste beforehand.
Who in the world can take on over 20 dragons? oh so i got a few pidley gnomes helping me

one dragon is supposed to be very hard to fight, ONE!! :) 22 would rip us to pieces

anyway :)
will stick around here long enough to hear your tale going through the game again Cremz

You don't have footman's dragonlance at all? Ok I cheat a bit so my tanks ended up to have 2 of it and boy killing the dragons were a breeze for me. I mean, with boots of speed and all, I think both my warriors kill 6-8 dragons per delayed blast fireball ftw.

Btw, since we are such a great Dragonlance fan have you read the War of The Souls trilogy yet? Its a very good read though I need to find the time to read the other new trilogies based on the Dragonlance world. I am a fan of the series since the chronicles. It was dead for a while but looks like its alive back now.

So what do you think? The Forgotten Realms world better or the Dragonlance world better? Personally I feel the Forgotten Realms lore is too vast and too hard to grasp (at the time I was a kid) but its ok now and interesting.

Heya everyone,

Played DQK a lot when I was younger. I'm getting back into it but appear to have gotten myself stuck. I went across the straits and into the Kryptophan tombs before doing the lighthouse. Now I'm at a spot where I need the key from Fastillion in the lighthouse... but no way to get back out! Am I screwed? Is there any way to leave, go to the lighthouse, and come back?

Alternatively is there a way I can get into the save file and pop my party to the lighthouse, do that, then pop myself back to where I'm at now?

Thanks

Polare

First tip: always make sure to make backup saves. Saves where your in the area before you were in the area that you are in now in caser of being stuck or going back for something you missed.

Kristophen: the place where you go into the tombs, is not a mandatory place to visit but does provide important clues to places you will need to visit and plot elements.

You should be able to do a backtrack as you can't get all of what you need in Kristohpen without the necessary keys provided at the lighthouse by Fastillion.

He will give you the gold key and the rusted key.

If you find you need to start over, you can do so by removing all characters from your party and then re-adding them to your party. When you get the two keys from Fastillion in the lighthouse make sure to use the Gold Key first on the door, it will then melt and below somewhere is a hidden door I believe that you will get a girlde of giant strength. If you use the rusted key first on the door that leads to the lower crypts you won't be able to get the girdle.

Vamcoy

Are the characters you are creating being saved to file? Are they in the list of characters made? If not, and I'm assuming there not and thats why you can't play cause you can't add them to your party list then check through just a couple pages back I had a similar problem and the Fifth Horseman helped me correct this problem.

Cremz

Are you still out there man? How far are you in the game now?

Reload your latest save where your hero wasn't dead. Remove him and save character. Next go back to your latest safe where he's super dead, remove him but do not save the dude. Finally add back your dead pc and you are done. All this must be done in a training hall.

Only lvl 18? I remember the one time I played it, back when it was released. It was maybe on the Amiga? As I recall all my characters got to lvl 40 and I had no repetitive fighting at all. Because of this you have to only play human characters. All other races are totally useless as they just don't level more than a few pitiful levels.

Imo it's a must to start multiple characters as fighters and change class with them when they reach lvl 12 or 13. A lvl 13 fighter, lvl 13-40 mage is superb. Fighter 13/Priest13+ Fighter 13/Thief 13+ is also great. Another option is to level up a thief and switch him over to fighter in order to get a higher thaco as you increase your fighter level. Fighter attack skill, gauntlets of strenght if starting as thief, backstab...Fun!

I guess the problem people have with the difficulty is because they chose multiclass characters?! If not I don't understand the problem with difficulty. Surely people play on the hardest level? You get more exp that way. Loads more fun. Didn't manage the extra challenge after the game was won though. That was rather insane. (Also no cheating! It takes away all the challenge and without the challenge it's no fun. Well I did give myself veeery good stats and that might be called cheating.)

Dark Queen of Krynn must be one of the best games I've ever played if you disregard the crappy graphics(which weren't crappy back then). I guess Bard's Tale and Dungeon Master Strikes Back(or was it DM 2?) are the only ones that was as enjoyable. Why has DQK gotten so crappy reviews?

I used to play the Krynn games a long time ago and incidentally still have my saved games from some previous games.

Here's a rapidshare (also attached) of a save located at the Citadel (end game) for anyone that wants to farm the items or run through the game with a max party.

http://rapidshare.com/files/48366416/SAVGAMA.zip.html

They were created in Champions and played through DKK as well so some of the items might not be available in DQK. No cheats other than maybe a few item dupes using character swapping. At the very least each character is using a different weapon (even though you can get 2 dragonlances at this point).

Great game. Used to play the series when i was a teen and remember the countless hours playing. Back then completed dqk so many times that i could run the entire game without the cluebook maps, was very fun. Good to be able to relive the memories now.

Anyway, I have a problem with importing characters from dkk to dqk. I have completed dkk and when i try to import characters from dqk from inside the game, i get a "no characters found". Both dkk folder and dqk folder are subfolders saved in a single folder called "krynn" in my pc. How do i solve this?

Anyway, I discovered an in-game bug in Dkk. In Ceberus, after you saved the town cleric and he gives you permission to take stuff from the armoury, if you leave some money or items unclaimed (after taking what you want), and do not leave the room, just by walking around in the room back to the entrance you will be able to keep getting a fresh batch of the same items as well as the 800xp. Good way to get gauntlets of ogre strength and mace of disruption for your entire party. The maces are extremely useful against the spectres if you take on Dave's challenge after completing the game.

Try if there's an install file for configuration, you might be able to set the death knights path there when executing it. Maybe there's also a configuration file where you can correct the dkk location with a text editor.
Another option worth trying is copying the dkk folder to the default location, C:\dkk.

Hey guys, I just played through the first two games, neither of them required an installation procedure, just downloaded the files and started playing. The files I downloaded from this site for DQOK don't seem to work that way, and when I mount them in DOS-BOX as the A drive and go through the install procedure, it tells me I have the wrong disk in; but none of the files I dl'ed refer to any disks...It sounds to me from reading this forum that there are three disks but all I have is the one group of files from the download. The files I have are:

DQK (app) 440kb
Install (app) 110kb
SAVGAMA.qsv 8kb
Start (batch) 8kb
vaulta.dat 0kb

Am I missing files, or do I need to break these down somehow? Thanks for any help/advice!

I found the files they didn't initially unpack for some reason, not sure why. Got it now though!

One option is not to run the install at all. Just run the DQK via dosbox. The game runs, altough you'l now only have PC peeper sounds.

Perhaps someone else knows?

Chris

during the installation you have to change two option:

(2) must be set to Soundblaster
(3) must be set to the folder where the game is mounted in DOSBox (e.g. C:\DARK)

after that the \DISK1\DQK.CFG can be written and soundblaster support is enabled

I did also erase the write protection (ATTRIB *.* -r) before running the installation.
EDIT: you will probably have to do this in windows, if needed - the command is disabled in DOSBox

Hi:hello:

Does anybody know how to use the "Haste" spell(doubles attacks/round and lets party age 1 year/use) without dying from old age? Are the Elven races immune to death by old age?

But on the other hand I'd need at least 1 Human Knight for the Dragonlance, I guess. How can I prevent him from dying? Compared to the powerful spells melee combat seems quite pointless to me with only two attacks, when not hasted.

Thanks you.

Haste is a useful spell, because it can also alter you initiative order, IIRC. But no, there is no way to prevent the aging, so you must not abuse it. And elves are susceptible to old age, but their lifespan is a lot longer. IIRC, the elves reached middle age at 175, old at 263 and venerable at 350, dying between 354 and 950... so the best tactic is not abuse the haste spell too much.

I don't remember if this game have longevity potions or youth potions... if that's the case, give them all to the human, half elves and kenders!

And yes, old AD&D gets very unbalanced towards magic users at high levels... but it still pays to have a couple of meatshields in your party :D Although I think that knights are more useful than vanilla fighters...

kmonster
05-12-2009, 11:17 PM
You can get through the trilogy without using haste spells or potions, so just avoid them unless you really need to. You can find a few potions which rejuvenate in the game, but not many IIRC.
For some characters the starting age is random, so it's worth rerolling until you get the youngest possible roll.

Knights are quite useful because of their high hitpoints and the ability to cast heal and resurrection. You can do quite some damage with two attacks per round, they are especially useful versus enemies immune to magic. You don't need more than 2-3 characters able to cast delayed blast fireball in your party of 6. If a knight dies, don't bother. Since they are no elves you can simply cast resurrection.

Don't Characters loose one point of constitution permanently when resurrected?

My current party is 2 Knights 3 Cleric/Rangers 1 Cleric/Red Mage. I thought Rangers are the best warriors since they have that bonus against "giant-class creatures". Does anybody know what giant-class creatures are and how big that damage bonus for the Ranger is?

If I am not mistaken, giant-class creatuers are all the giants (hill, mountain, fire, etc), firbolgs, ogres and ettins. Can't remember if there were other giants. And I think the bonus is an attack bonus. But that game goes by first edition rules, and I can't remember them very well right now. But still, I think knights are better overall warriors, they are basically a mix of paladins, fighters and clerics

Rangers seem to get their level added to damage when fighting their special enemies. But those are very few of the DQoK monsters (mainly the ettins you can get as outside random encounter and the fire giants) and there are no hard battles with them.
Their spells are quite useful, they get mirror image and protection from fire which can be cast before combat.

The level 7 resurrection spell doesn't lower constitution IIRC, only the level 5 spell "raise dead" does.

An annoying thing about cleric/ranger is that the game often confuses the two classes and sets the XP back after training so you level up more slowly.

Although it's probably too late for you this game, there is no point in going from Sword Knight to Rose Knight. Exact same spell progression with much less xp to reach if you are a Knight of the Sword.

Except that sword knights can't advance past level 18. It takes a lot of xp, but if you get that far you should switch.

For the life of me, I can't get this thing to install so I can use something other than PC speaker.

I unzipped the .rar file into a subfolder in my C:\oldgames folder called DQK. I mount C:\oldgames as C in DOSBox

I have all of the floppy folders in a single separate folder. I mount that folder as A in DOSBox.

When I go to install, I get a "wrong disk!" error. I just want to get this thing installed and running. What am I doing wrong?

Idem. :smile2:

First: delete what you have done till now, it's worthless anyway. Start over from scratch.
The game folder in the archive from AB is named DQOK.

***WHY someone thought it was needed to rename the original install dir to DQOK in stead of DQK is a mystery, one of the many here on AB, seems some peeps think they are creative .... and in their creative process they of course screw up things....***

Unzip the whole folder -(with the subfolders)- on your \oldgames\
Now rename DQOK to DQK

Run dosbox, mount your \oldgames\ as C:
do a
cd dqk

Run install now, it will work, you can choose something else then that horrific PC speaker sound, and the config will be correctly saved.

They're broken it seems. Probably part of the ones uploaded in Kosta times. :mhh:

I think they may have pointed to replacementdocs. That is what the Death Knights of Krynn links do.

Not sure if anyone checks this or not, but this game is different from CoK and DKK in getting characters / save games imported. Any suggestions? I have all three games in C:\Oldgames and mount C:\oldgames then cd DQK to run Dark Queen (ends up reading C:\DQK). I ran the install each time I loaded Dark Queen and set the Death Knights directory as C:\DKK\SAVE. I've tried copying over the character files in Windows from DKK to DQK and DQK\Save folders but they still don't read.

This was probably asked before, but I can't seem to find it. Your help is appreciated!

Can you dual class, or Human Change Class as it's sometimes called? I remember doing it in the PoR-CotAB-SotSB-PoD series, and I'm pretty sure it was in the Savage Frontier series, but I can't find the option anywhere in this game.

You cannot dualclass in the Krynn series.

The game can be unprotected with Neverlock. After that, any text will be accepted by the document check.

You're confusing dualclassing and multiclassing.

It is the same thing as far as 2nd edition is concerned. :p

There was no way to do what you yourself are referring to because it simply didn't exist. But I clearly remember multiclassing my spellcasters when I played when I was young. And it's exactly the same thing for almost all extent and purposes.

I don't remember if you can dual class in the Krynn games, but dual classing and multiclassing are different. Multiclassing is what non-humans can do to level different classes at the same time. Dual classing is only for humans, I think. That's when you start one class and then change to another class. Doing so makes you stop leveling up in your previous class and you lose all benefits from that class until you exceed its level with your new class. You could make ridiculously powerful characters with it, because you could make a lvl 39 fighter and dual class to a magic user and once you reach level 40 magic user, you're a lvl 39 fighter with lvl 40 magic user spells.

So they're different and have different advantages and disadvantages. I think dual classing is more powerful than multiclassing if you're willing to put the time and effort to basically level up twice.

Can you actually get to level 40 with 2nd edition?

At least in 3rd edition, once you reach level 20 you're pretty much a God.

I'm in Hulderfolk Wood and I've collected all 5 words from Elea. I have no problem making the Banquet appear, but can't seem to get any further. Saying Gebene reveals the table, but says the elves don't invite us to join them. Any other word just seems to rile them up.

What am I missing here?

Depends on what you're playing, a spellcaster or a non-spellcaster character? Because a level 17 wizard can stop time and do whatever the hell he wants, a level 17 cleric can ressurect an entire army in 6 seconds, but a level 17 fighter celebrates if he could kill a single demon, a level 17 rogue is overjoyed if he could steal some treasure from the king's castle and so on. :p

That's why you're supposed to work in a team in 3rd edition. ;)

The Mage always look like a God, but he would never have gotten there if the tank would not have been there 10 levels earlier.

So, the fact that there's such a ginormous gap between the relative power of equal level characters is totally ok? I lost count of how many times wizards made my fighters obsolete. :dislike:

Mages should rather make stronger magic items so you don't get obsolete.

Also, mages who use spells to "break the game" (and it is easily possible) is usually heavily frowned by DMs.

Alsox2... RP is supposed to balance everything out in the game. If you don't play a RP heavy game then of course you're going to feel like you're dragging the team down because you're not doing what you are supposed to do. The mechanics of 3rd edition were never built without RP in mind.

Maybe, but once you switch classes, you must not use the previous class' special abilities, because you won't get any XP for the new class. You cannot just switch from one class to another when you feel like it. Not to mention that normal class restrictions apply.

I tried to login as myself (blastradius14) but I could not. That said, here's my compilation of files, stored on my server.

The base folder can be found at
http://robertsnet.homenet.org/krynn

Each of the games has its own folder, and there is also the Gold Box Companion (link to their website for credit, and readme found in folder) Also, is d-fend.zip, which is a front end for Dos-Box. Some of you may remember this. A Shortcut is WAY more awesome then typing it all up yourself!

Specifically for DQK, you can find all the files in one place at
http://robertsnet.homenet.org/krynn/DQK/

I hope this helps.
