:help: QFG1VGA all of a sudden quit working on me! Whenever I start up the game, it gives me this funky error message saying, "You need [x] more bytes of free memory available to run this game. If you have any resident software loaded, please remove it and try again. Script #: 0, IP: 0". :cry: Please help!!

No, there is no such "rules"... Most likely, those who can help you didn't even log in and see your message in the first place. Waiting only a few hours is far from being a long wait.

What is your computer spec, do you use XP and if yes, did you try DOSBox?

Sorry, I didn't notice there's a time zone difference. Anyways, I'm using Win98 on an AMD K6 processor- I'm not sure how many MHz that is, all I know is that it has 512 megs of RAM. I tried using dosbox, but it runs retardedly slowly no matter how much faster or slower I make it.

qfg1vga should work fine through windows 98 - it was released around that era of windows OS.

You mentioned that the game suddenly stopped working for you - I take that to mean at one point it was working fine... Am also going to assume you have an up to date virus scanner running on your system - if not get one quick :D

Some things to try:

Reinstall the game over your existing installation - this will rule out any file corruption.

If that doesn't cure it, then try uninstalling anything that has added new TSR's to your windows installation - i.e. anything you've installed that has added an icon to your systray, anything that has added to your autoexec.bat and config.sys files, anything that has added something to your "startup" folder.

Could it be that it means Extended memory (or unextended or whatever)? - that was a common problem with DOS programs in Win 98, you might need to adjust settings in config.sys.

I have AVG free edition, but I don't scan regularly since it's SOOO slow. I should eventually actually pay money for a faster scanner, but anyways... About reinstalling these games: I think it's something more than just a corrupted file since it's happening with ALL my Sierra VGA games. I didn't mention, but this also happens with SQVGA and laura bow 2 (which I never got to play :cry: .) I guess it could be the memory thingy, but I'm not really sure what lines I need to edit in config.sys. About TSRs... What the crap are they?? Tasers? Anyways, this problem has been going on for a while, so I'm not quite sure what I've installed at the time of the problem.

I just tried running it by booting DOS only, and that seemed to work. the only problem is that I can't get my mouse or soundcard to work. Does anyone know how to load mouse and sound card drivers in DOS?

Since you are using WIN 98 i suggest you use abandonia boot disk and run the game from DOS screen. It should give you enough memory to start most games.

If not, you can edit the autoexec. bat file and config.sys file on the bootdisk and reduce even more unnecessar programes (like maybe keyboard setting, soundblaster driver, mouse - it all depends on what game you are trying to run).

That should solve it.

Unless the game has issue with FAT32 file sistem.

Then you can "play" with the memory lines. For example you can increase the setting for EMS mmeory size.

you can copy them into abandonia disk, but you can leave these lines out:
rem c:\mouse\mouse.exe

these are settings for my sound blaster. the rest of commands will be made by abandonia boot disk programme (they are commands for memory settings).
These commands define that you will tranfer you drivers into higher memorry and leave more space for starting up the porgramme.


no. abandonia bood disk will be (should be) created on your floppy disk and will boot your system in dos via floppy disk. you will be able to play most dos games there without problems.

also i suggest you make all changes in autoexec.bat and config.sys file on your floppy disk. that way if you mess up something you can simply format the floppy disk and make another boot disk like that. although i really dont' see what you can mess up. :)

to return back to WIN98 simply take out the flooppy out of the dirve and reboot your computer (press ctrl+alt+delete or use the button on your computer casing).

BTW i already have 3 boot disks each with various settings.
There is a way you can fit multiple settings on one disk (like having different config.sys files) but i can't remember exactly how you to it.
Something similar to the menu you get when you turn on your computer and continuously press F8. that will give you menu on how you want to start windows (normal mode, safe mode, no drivers mode...).

sometimes this is usefull to know because maybe you will need some game that is played with keyboard and uses beeper for sound and need lot of basic memorry (in this case no drivers setting might help). again to return to normaql WIN 98 just reboot your computer.

I hope this solves your problems. Some older DOS games really had difficult memory settings. there is only 640kB of basic memory (for starting up porgrammes) in compuers. hardly enough, and on the other hand it kind of breakes developement of computers. and we owe it all to Billy. he famous quote: " 640kB should be more than enough space for every computer". a few years alter RAM increased to 1MB and so on... today we have GB of ram in computers and still basic 640kB start up RAM. :Titan:

this depends on what sound card are you using? or what is the subtitute for it (compatibility of it)?

Usually DOS games have some soundsetup to set it up (like sndsetup.exe or just setup.exe ). and might you also have to insert a few line in that autoexec file. which ones? well if it's creative labs SB they have some programmes that will help you install them to work under DOS. same goes for some other cards.

but you have some new onboard card then you might have some difficulties getting it to work.

if it's soundblaster and not the newest "live" one then you can use my lines of autoexec.bat (without my comments offcourse). you can modify them:


SET BLASTER=A220 I7 D1 T2 <---this one configures SB (A=port, I=IRQ...)
SET SNDSCAPE=C:\WINDOWS <---deifnes where Soundsape is installed
SET CTSYN=C:\sbpci <--- this one i don't know exactly
c:\sbpci\apinit <--- This one initialises SB



Best way to install it is to run DOS with abandonia boot disk and then go to the folder where your SB is installed. there you should find some setup or something simmilar. run that and SB will install the propper lines into autoexec.bat on your abandonia disk.

Another option is to search for Autoexec.bat the windows is using (Start -> Run -> sysedit.exe or find it on the disk) and simply copy lines that set SB into autoexec.bat on your abandonia boot disk.

it can mean:

1. You don't have your card installed under DOS. Make sure you find the card's drivers for DOS and install them.

2. Your sound card is not supported by the game.

3. DOS doesn't support your soundcard.

EDIT: 4. your sound card is configured on another port. try changing the settings in autoexec.bat

Ports are kind of gates where your card is plugged in. it's lika a software address of the slot where the card is inputed.

Interrupt number (IRQ) and other adresses (DMA...) are to define more specifically where your card is. once you set them correct your basically tell computer where you souncard is.

windows 98 have this simplified as they do all the setting up for you (automatically detect). so do some games (if you use setup or soundsetup, sndsetup).

edit: for more info on how to find the correct ports and address see windows help (press F1 when in windows).
