Anyone up for a game while we await updates in the UFO thread?

Someone from the UK can probably provide a more detailed explanation (BeefontheBone, where are you?), but it's quite an interesting game involving London tube stations. The rules are admittedly complex, so the best way for a novice to learn how the game is played is to watch a game in progress. It's surprisingly intuitive, despite the large number of ruleset variations. Hopefully someone who knows the basic rules (I'm no expert myself) will want to play, and the rest of you should pick it up in no time.
I'm doing a search on the MC, here's something amusing I found (no, I'm not BSin gyou):
The Basic Rules:
1. Each player takes it in turn to name a street in London.
2. The winner is the first person to say Mornington Crescent.
sure reminds me of a game we used to play at 3 in the morning called color or country
(evryone names a color or country in turn, whoever names a country loses)

Close, except that you're actually naming London Underground stations rather than streets.
as far as I understood so far there is about as many rule sets as there are people who know how to play :D

King's Cross right out of the gate, and you claim you don't know how to play! Very well, then: Marble Arch.

Euston!
BeefontheBone
30-08-2005, 09:44 PM
Euston? Euston? Always a bad move - I'm going to let you off this once because you're clearly a beginner, but ever since the introduction of the Aberford East ruling into the official rulebook, Euston's almost always a no-go. You should probably have gone for Piccadilly Circus. I'm glad you didn't though, 'cause I'm going to try and collect a set of circuses - they pay 10x the dice throw when you've got them all. Unless I'm thinking of a different game.
Oxford Circus!
Incidentally, AFAIK the game was created for the long running Radio 4 programme I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue (which I'm actually listening to right now) - billed as the "antidote to panel games" when panel games were still played, but lasting for many years, it's extremely popular, and Mornington Crescent is one of a number of running in-jokes - also under this heading could be Humpf's introductions involving local history and slagging off the panel, the entirely fictional scorer Samantha who is the behind of some incredibly filthy double entendres and singing rounds like One Song to the Tune of Another and Pick Up Song.

Charing-Cross (which, incidentally, is too short for the trains so people on the last couple of carriages have to go to one of the carriages further forward to get off).
EDIT: Euston is right next to Mornington Cresent (If my tube knowledge serves me well).

I should have been more specific about the ruleset initially, but I didn't want to throw off any novices who might otherwise be interested in the game. I wasn't intending to utilize Hammerford's Circle of Circuses, but since it wasn't explicitly declared, I'll let it pass.

Oh, I guess it's me, isn't it? Hampstead for the double-pass.

Ah, that old chestnut. I find it's easily countered with the rarely-seen Pimlico block. Pimlico.

West Hampstead is still open, though, so I'll just pop over there.
Tom Henrik

And I'll pop over to Kilburn.

You seem to have stumped everybody with that one, Tom. I fear we're getting a bit close to the dreaded DHL (the full name of which I dare not speak so early in the game), so I call shooters and play Embankment.
Tom Henrik

Kilburn is the next station from West Hampstead ;)
But ok, as you call shooters, I'll go an hide in Swiss Cottage :ok:
Edit:
And in case people wonder, I don't have any clue about the rules, so I am trying different approaches to crack the code. This game will be mine... oh yes.

Earl's Court. I'll remind everyone that Circle Line stations are now twice as costly with the Hindrance Rule in effect. (That's the new Hindrance Rule, of course.)

Marylebone?

Hah! That means I can rush over to Earls Court! Try to beat that!
EDIT:Oh, almost forgot that I'm really a choir boy... Gotta run to the practice! Cya!

Hey hey hey, I'm in Earl's Court! This entitles me to set a block, which I'll do at Green Park (of course) before sliding over to St. Paul's. Let's see what you can do with that.

Ooops... My eyes deceived me... Couldn't see you there... And EC seemed like such a great spot!. Well, Covenant Garden, then!

Seven Sisters - everyone's favourite dirty-sounding classic. After the introduction of the Seven Brides rule I'm never quite sure if I'm entitled to move there, but I'm pretty sure it's OK here. Humpf?
Loial

Hmm... I'm totally lost... I don't know if we're moving about as one, or we're all travelling our different ways, don't have the slightest idea of what makes a move illegal (well, I learned about no two ppl taking the same place the hard way...) or legal ways, as I could just as easily played darts on the map... And I do not know how the game is won... Even tried to look up some games, but it totally confused... The one thing I think I know is we're eventually going for MC, so why not... I go for Mornington Crescent
If that makes me win, great! If that ruins the game, then sorry, but you really should given me more directions of how this game should be played... Hopefully I won't get any permanent damage with this move...

Damn, I'm never sure about that Seven Brides rule, but I still decided to go for it anyway, and look where it got me. Congratulations Loial (also, good choice of nick - everyone loves sitting around writing about other peoples' adventures and accidentally getting caught up in them. As revenge for beating me, since I'm a sore loser, I'm gonna tell the Elders where you've got to :P)

Well, that's mostly how I enter these games... Trying to passively read up on the action, and suddenly I'm in the middle of it...
WOW, I won? :w00t: Well, I couldn't see why not, but on the other hand, I'm not exactly sure why either...
Maybe I'll try to set off a new one? Hmm... How about Mansion House since I'm a fan of Maniac Mansion... :ok: Let's see if I can understand more of this game's dynamics...

I believe the rules for the game is "wing it" ;)
BeefontheBone

That, and throw in the occasional made up comedy rule. You can play on the BBC Mornington Crescent message board, and listen to the show on the website, but it's not on at the minute.

Wapping seems as good an opening move as any. Good job on the last game, BTW, Loial.
I'm gonig to play it simple and say Skadwell. (which I would offcourse be unable to say were we playing by the east-scottish rules, but I believe those to be absurd)

I'd be careful about even mentioning the East Scottish Rules in certain settings, after the incident during the 2003 European finals, but I think you're OK in here. Sudbury Hill.
we should start a new session. is anyone familiar with rules of "mornington crescent in space" (one of the most popluar alternative settings as far as I know...)

Is that the version where every time you take a turn you have to say "over" at the end and the first person to say "Houston, we have a problem" wins, over?
