well what comes to my mind is that you managed to get wrong ripped version or something. mine is for example 64 504 985 bytes in size. is your smaller?
also don't forget to use latest dosbox 0.72 (that one works for me and i have tried every core settings) and set proper sound card in install.exe, misconfigured sound can freeze a game as well

You can run the install program even after the initial installation to reconfigure the sound. (see page 4 of install guide). Run it from within DOSBox. It will allow you to test your settings from the config program. Make sure you select the same config that DOSBox is set to (typically standard Soundblaster settings IRQ=7 DMA=1 Base=220 ).

What video adapter card do you use? I know that DOSBox had a problem with VESA drivers in the earlier releases but I think that issue is solved in 7.1 and after. Just make sure your video card supports the VBE (VESA BIOS extensions) standards. This game requires it. As a long shot try running the UNIVBE program from the game directory before you start the game.
Also when you run the install program it lets you set the screen resolution you want to use. What did you select?
EDIT: Actually the more I check into it it looks like running the UNIVBE program may take care of your problem. It will load a VESA driver for you.
grievous
06-02-2008, 02:24 AM
i ran the univbe program and it didnt change anything. i can get though all the intro videos but when the game should start it just exits back to dosbox says something about halted cache\cache or flex read error static\shapes.

Well I'm stumped then. If your sure you have a good installation then I don't know what the problem could be. Did you run install from DOSBox or Windows?
The Fifth Horseman
06-02-2008, 05:53 PM
Try an older version of DOSBox.
If the same problems appear, it's possible your CD is damaged, or your optical drive is at the end of its lifespan.
Try and create an ISO image of the disc, using the lowest read-speed your drive offers. Then use IMGMOUNT command to mount that ISO as a drive in DOSBox and re-install the game from it.

i was starting to think my cd could be damaged because when i install the game it has alot of trouble getting past the shapes file and if thats the case where can i download the game? im no computer wiz so i dont know what an ISO image is or how to create one.
grievous
06-02-2008, 10:42 PM
well i think i figured out the ISO image thing and it says it cant copy the shapes file because of cyclic redundancy or something would it be possible for someone to e-mail the shapes file to me and would that work?
The Fifth Horseman
07-02-2008, 07:29 AM
Might do, might do not. It seems that I was right and the CD is broken - more files may have been damaged than just that one.
grievous
07-02-2008, 09:55 PM
it was just the shapes file. i found a place to download it. i replaced my shapes file with the one i downloaded and it works now.

However he now says that the game is too old to be run in my current system. It is Microsoft XP Service Pack 2. I also bought this game a long time ago when it was first brought out.
Does this mean it is too old and I will have to buy a new CD of this game so that it will be compatible to today's new systems?

Without checking the details, the game is not compatibile with Windows.

Not exactly. You can get it to work by using DOSBox to emulate a DOS enviroment.
We've got a DOSBox tutorial stickied in the Troubleshooting forum, and that would be the best place for you to start.

There is no download button because you can't download it.
The game is -(still)- protected.
So: no download for this one.
Can change in the future.

Yo people, maybe someone could help me, I installed the game from d-fend on XP but when i start a new game, the intro go fine the menu loads fine too but when i enter in the game i have a whole black screen with a repeating message "nullShape t189 f0!" and "nullShape t889 f0!" ... <?> The stranger thing is that i played 2 years ago this game on the same computer and everything was ok, the only difference was that I installed the game from dos in win 98 and made it run on d-fend on win XP. I tryed every option in D-fend, reinstall a lot of times, copied from the origanal cd missing folders if any was missing, and i'm out of ideas how to fix this.
P.S. the game is in a original CD bought on a shop 12 years ago and the Cd is not damaged. Like i said I'm out of ideas, Who can help ?

Don't know if D-Fend is the cullprit, but I have also the original CD and it installs/run fine DIRECTLY in dosbox 0.72.
So my advise: delete your crusader folder and do an install/run directly in dosbox.
If you still have problems:
Post ALL your mount lines and how you configured soundsettings.
BTW, the game runs better if you create an ISO from your CD and use imgmount in dosbox.

Btw. do you know maybe how to convert the films and sound extentions from the game cd to wmv mpeg or avi and sounds from amf to waw or mp3 ?
One thing is sure, the old games had a great musics in game.

You can find the music from both Crusader games at www.mirsoft.info. It's in MOD format, so you'll need a MOD player to listen to it (WinAmp does it quite well)

Hi,
I just dug my old gamecd and then found this website and downloaded dosbox. I think it is very cool that I can now play some of my old fav dos games.
anyways, my crusader runs fantastic until I get to the rebel base... whenever I talk to any of the characters in the bar, the game freezes during their particular video. I can't seem to get around this without missing vital parts of the story. Is there a way to fix this bug? Anybody else experiencing this?
Thanks,
Bon
[Edited]
So you're running it from your original CD? Chances are that you haven't mounted your CD unit in DOSBox, check the tutorials as how to do it.
If that's not it (but it probably is...), run the configuration program, or open the crusader.cfg file with a plain text editor (like Windows notepad), and check that the path to the clips is correct, _specially_ if your CD is not in the D: unit. (I'm talking from memory here.)

Has anybody had success in running this in pure DOS? My 700mhz machine isn't fast enough for DOSBOX to run this without too many frameskips and too few cycles. That wouldn't be so bad if my XP machine's HD hadn't bit the big one.
Unfortunately my machine doesn't seem to like crusader; even a boot to "safe mode command prompt" gets a general protection fault when I try to run the game.
Any ideas?
dosraider
07-05-2009, 08:08 PM
H... running this in pure DOS? ......
... even a boot to "safe mode command prompt"...
You hardly can say 'safe mode command prompt' is 'pure dos'.*sigh*
FYI: Crusader runs fine in MsDos6.22.
You could try a 6.22 bootdisk .... if you have a FAT16 partition.
Or a FreeDos bootdisk .....if you have a FAT32 partition.
If you will be able to get sound is another matter.
.... Or even more simply: give it a go in XP/VDMSound, the Crusader games work fine in combination XP/VDMSound.

Well thanks for the advice dosraider. Unfortunately, like I said my XP machine is dead at the moment, and will be until I can raise ~$90 for a decent SATA drive. I got it to work just dandy with dosbox on that machine, with sound and the hq3x filter to boot.
My soundcard is a SB Live! Value...there was one site I found with dos drivers, but the setup EXE refused to run.

I really doubt that the Crusader games will run in a XP DOS box. The games use a DOS extender that really dislikes Windows of any type. You can't even run it in a DOS box in Windows 9x.
DOSBOX runs them ok (very demanding though) otherwise you have to use pure DOS.
SBLive does have a DOS driver as you say and it ought to work with the game.

HI, I was looking around in the web, searching for a forum with an explanation, how to make run crusader no remorse and solve the issue with error:
"Unable to open file (null), in file FILE/FASTFLEX.C, line 38"
There was a lot questions about that in many different forums but no reliable answer in one place for that.
Finally I managed to remember the solution and solve the problem.
After the instalation of the game (Crusader no remorse v 1.01) from the original cd, we must find the install location and copy everything from the original cd to the install location in the hdd folder. everything but not the exe files.
The fastflex issue, appear too if we forgot to mount the game as well as the cd. (can be copied into a hdd location, and mounted from there as a CDROM)
This is the most important, this game or at least the original game, canot be played without a cd or a mounted folder with the copied cd files inside.
I like to return sometimes to this game and this is not the first time when i forget how to and why, so a little reminder for myself and maybe someone else, how to install and mount all this stuff using dosbox + d-fend.
We install dosbox first, then d-fend. doble click in d-fend icon, add with editor and step by step, we configure.
for the instalation we put in GAME EXE, the path from the cd or from the hdd folder of the crusader.exe ass well as for the setup
game need loadfix 64 kb and the capture folder can be anywhere.
In mounting options, click add,
mount type: drive
select drive: C:\CRUSADER (The folder must exist, so we create it "by hand" and is empty, for now.)
mounted drive letter: C
the same again, add,
mount type: CDROM
select drive: D:\CrusaderNoRemorse (the location where I copied everything from the original cd )
mounted drive letter: F (F is my CDROM drive)
Ok, Ok, and run setup. The system has installed the game in: C:\CRUSADER
After the instalation we change the path of the game exe to the installation root and should work.
If dosent work, use the method gived here:http://cyberionsystems.com/echosector/index.php?topic=6.0
the game need to work and install, enabled XMS, EMS and video card vga. The rest depend on what machine we use (at least i think).
The black screen issue is something strange, i have solved this by installing the game by dosbox without d-fend, using it only to configure options like full screen and cpu stuff.
I think, it apear when we forget to mount the cd as well as the game.
I had some problems with, how to patch the game using dosbox, and google has not gived me the answer, so some instructions if i will forget it again.
To patch the game with dosbox:
open dosbox (NO D-FEND !)
type:
mount c c:\crusader (directory of the installation)
mount d d:\crusadernoremorse (the directory where i copied the cd and used it instead of the game cd, for obvious reasons) (don't use space in the name of the folder, won't work in dos.)
c:
crupatch c:crusader\crusader.exe (i think this hasnt work)
crupatch c:\
the game was patched. Of course the patch must be extracted and copied in c:\crusader folder as well as in d:\crusadernoremorse folder. (Maybe just in the first one)
In Priority i use options: first higher, second normal
In Environment i use:
63 MB - amount of dos memory
enabled XMS and EMS
cycles 15000, up 500, down 20, with enabled option sync
CPU Core: dynamic
frame skip: 0
display: vga
In General:
fullscreen
doublebuffering
fullfixed
aspect correction
Render method: ddraw
Resoluion: default
scale: none
scaling: 1.00
Hope this will help someone or myself in the future.

type:
mount c c:\crusader (directory of the installation)
Aààààààànd that's the screw up.
Do NOT mount the folder directly.
Rule of mounting correctly:
First create a folder to use as virtual C (let say: C:\oldgames)
Mount that as virtual C:\
mount c c:\oldgames
Mount the CD as CDdrive D(or imgmount an image as D)
Install the game in dosbox in let say c:\crusader, that's your dosbox path, in windows it will look as: c:\oldgames\crusader.
Now to run crusader and avoid screw ups:
Mount \oldgames\ as virtual C
mount c c:\oldgames\
c:
Mount the CD as CDdrive D (or imgmount an image as D)
do a
cd crusader
Your prompt will change to c:\>crusader
now launch the game, the game will find the needed files.
No need to do all kinds of strange manips wilk7486, no need at all.
ALWAYS use a folder as virtual C in dosbox and work further from there .... if the game engine looks for files in a specific path/subdir you will avoid the 'Unable to open whatever file'.
Many dosgames will not run directly from the C prompt but need to be launched from their own directory.
Always use the same mounts, don't alter the mounts after you installed the game.
Specific for crusader run the game from "c:\>crusader" prompt, NOT FROM C:\>
For those on Vista or Win7: use your "personal user" folders or another partition then C to create an \oldgames\ folder, will avoid read/write restricions.
Read the tutos about the dosbox .

Yes, it's ripped.
If we find the full CD we can add an external download link to the ISO Cellar, but we can't host such a big archive ourselves.

In DOSBox you need to mount the CD or else the game won't have access to it, use the MOUNT command. See DOSBox's README.TXT for details but this should work if you CD drive letter is D:
mount d d:\ -t cdrom -label CRUSADER
As for the sound you can first try in-game accessing the options from the game menu. If that doesn't work, edit CRUSADER.CFG and make sure there are lines reading like this (for DOSBox's default sound card settings and if the CD is mounted in DOSBox as the D: drive):
sound=on
music=on
port=0x220
irq=7
dma=1
soundcard=3
...
cdletter=d
flicpath=\flics
Don't add these lines, just edit the existing ones changing the text after the "=" in each line.
This did it! Thank you!

Hello,I think what you are talking about is a blast pac.
Unlike other items, this can be used only near the target. For example in no remorse, In the first level you get it.It can be used only near the thermal coupler which you have to destroy.
You will also get another item known as the Fusion pac in the Nerve gas mission of No Remorse. :-)
