I decided to put together all my future posts into a single thread here. Begins with reposting the previous stuff, though.

Well that took me a long time to read.

Very well done though, wish I could comment more but I'm still trying to get rid of a stigmatism.

As for the minatures, did you paint them? They're very well done.

Aye, I have painted all these minis myself.

Now, behold... Iron Angel!

The Iron Angel (http://photobucket.com/albums/v13/the_fifth_horseman/CMON/Iron%20Angel%20I/)

PS. I have a fair amount of unfinished WIP fiction. I'll add it tomorrow.

The pixel art is very basic but it's so well put together that it looks fantastic, I love the symbol by the way.

You're not a bad writer, and I major in it at my so called "prestigous" school.
So I think I would know.

You is teh good.

Is there any other way to write a story?

The Fifth Horseman

Well, some people apparently do work on collective fiction projects, and others call for aid of more experienced writers.

I, however, did not have to resort to any of these while writing these stories.

I think you have a very good brain to wrote the stories that you have created.Keep up the good work. :Titan:

As for the pixel, I am most existed over the wings. Really well done! My hat off to you :kosta:

The pixel graphic of the Iron Angel is not fully my work, Tom. There was something called "make your own Index Astartes", from which I have taken the base image of the Marine armour and proceeded to alter it to match the converted model. The sword-and-wings insignia, however, is completely mine, and was originally created as a better variant of Dark Angels Chapter symbol for use in Dawn of War game.

OK. Here are four unfinished pieces of fiction from me. Some day I might actually get them done, right now they float in a limbo.

The Fifth Horseman

I write only when I have the right mood for that, which isn't just any day. When I do, it usually doesn't take too much time because the concept has been in my mind for long and therefore was improved and refined dozens of times before I even touched the keyboard to type it in.

I use a lot of inspiration. Even music can give an idea for a scene. Books, graphic novels and other peoples' fiction even more so.

And if any of you have noticed that the demonic hero in Mark of Malal resembles Ghost Rider - aye, that's exactly what lies in the core of the concept.

Just a little something. I've been digging up in the directory where I store the photos of my miniatures and found a few odds and ends.
This was painted a year and a half ago:

Some more writing. I hope you like this one too.

Writing
Mark of Malal: Book One, Chapter 1 (Redux)

The dream always begins the same.
I am falling through a haze of grey. Clouds? Mist? Smoke? Something else?
Then the Sigil appears, coldly glowing with blue. I know not its meaning nor purpose. I know not why I dream of it.
Five marks inscribed within a strange glyph. A circle of runes surrounds it. They seem to live with a life of their own.
It makes my skin crawl.
I fall towards the center of the pattern.
A sudden strange sensation, like an electric current passing through my body. Then it is gone and the pattern vanishes into grey above me.
The grey mist begins to thin. I see a dark color before me and know this is the ground.
I smell smoke. And then a different sort of stench assaults my nostrils.
Amdst the reek of burning fuel and machine oil, I sense charred flesh.
Falling further, I begin to see more details.
Fires. Patches of murky red and black.
Setting sun glints off a piece of metal.
I am close enough to see the patches for what they are. Dead bodies.
...armored dead bodies. I recognize Space Marine armor.
Some of the red armored corpses have horns.
The Marines fought the Traitors here. But who won? Where are the survivors?
I see a cloud of darkness on the horizon. And my heart shrinks, for I know the answer.
No matter how valiantly they fought, the servants of the Emperor have failed and darkness prevailed.
I recognize the Traitors; they are Word Bearers. The Space Marines are Raven Knights.
I hit the ground. My bones should be shattered by the impact, yet it is not so.
I stand up and survey landscape of destruction that surrounds me. The ground is sticky with blood.
One of the loyalist Marines has lost his helmet in battle. To my terror, I recognize his face. Mikael. I knew him even before we were chosen to become the Emperor's Finest.
I cannot believe it. I take off the helmet of another of the bodies. Larssen. He was in the recruitment party when I went through the trials that deemed me worthy to become a Marine.
I kneel down to check another. And another. I know them all. They are my chapter-brothers.
They are dead. And I know that I am somehow responsible.
Suddenly, I feel I am not alone here. There is someone... no, something... nearby.
I hear heavy footsteps of ceramite boots behind me.
I want to turn around, but find myself unable to. It is not fear. I try to move, but cannot.
I smell brimstone.
Emperor. Its nearly upon me.
It circles me. I can feel its unholy gaze upon me. Then it stops, facing me.
Nothing has prepared me for what I see. I scream. A mortal man would die from a mere glimpse at the creature standing in front of me.
It's no bigger than an ordinary Marine.
It wears a suit of powered armor, shining like a black sun. Despite the surroundings, not a single speck of dirt mars the surfaces.
Thee identical white runes glow with inner fire at the center of its chest and upon its shoulders. They look like stylised skulls.
In its right hand it holds a chain.
What makes it so terryfing is its head.
It has no head. Where one would expect to see it, there is a clean skull surrounded by a raging inferno.
The creature (Demon?) effortlessly lifts me by the neck and holds my face mere inches in front of its skull. I feel warmth from the flames. They are not as hot as one would expect.
Suddenly, I regain control over my vocal cords.
"Who are you?" I whimper.
It "looks" into my eyes. I turn my eyes from its gaze, looking towards the monstrosity's armor instead.
Emperor. I know it. I know it well.
The thing locks its gaze with mine again. It begins to speak.
It's voice is heavy as tombstone, each syllable inevitable as the grave. No living creature could produce a sound like that.
And before a single word sounds, I know the answer. Because I know the armor.
Two words. "YOUR DESTINY". It is my armor.

Antonius awoke with a cold sweat. For a moment he did not recognize his surroundings, but the memory quickly came to him. As the rest of 5th Company of the Raven Knights, he is onboard the battle barge "Ravenlord", currently en route to Chares III. An astropathic distress call has been received and the Chapter command ordered investigation.

His mind returns to his very recent nightmare. The same nightmare that returns to him for the better part of his life, ever since his induction into the ranks of the Chapter.
Every time this... this vision... came to him, it was longer. He tries to comprehend its meaning, but the answer once again eludes him.
Yet, he has an ominous feeling that whatever catastrophe the nightmare heralded, he is soon going to find out.

Those who have read Mark of Malal will probably recognize both characters. This is because I'll try rewriting the whole damn thing (so that I won't be haunted in my sleep by the poor quality of its earlier version). This is the beginning, more to come later.

Just a little animated GIF that I made as the startup screen and screensaver for my cellphone (planning to do a background in a similar style, but don't have time to do it ATM)

Note: This one isn't the final version, and as a result of my error the animation "bobs" in multiple directions - pretty nauseating, that. I'll upload the GIF of the finalised version shortly.

This was made through an unholy marriage between GIMP and MS Paint (Paint served me to create the basic template, all the rest was done in GIMP)

Dang, those Ghost Riders turned out pretty damn huge! They looked far smaller on 1024x768...
I'll have to re-work them to fit in the 100 px size limit.
Same for the GITS ones, they're 130 px (30 over the limit).
Guess I have no choice but to spend that hour or two on fixing them. Will post the re-done versions tomorrow.

EDIT: GITS signatures removed, I'm uploading fixed versions

OK, here's a bunch. Unless otherwise noted, all are under 20kb size.
Feel free to use them, under one condition - upload them to your own hosting space or photo host of your choice.

And this is a reduced-quality version (warning, 30 k).
I reduced the height, chopped out half the frames and reduced the color palette by almost two-third to achieve this size reduction.

A pretty handy photo editor, and as you can see also good for making animations with a bit of practice.

Since I'm making myself pre-configured DosBox shortcuts, I have to make some icons to go with them. Here's some progress on the one for Wibarm, the graphics program used is GIMP v 2.2:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v13/the_fifth_horseman/Games/Wibarm.png
Here's the original picture. Ugly!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v13/the_fifth_horseman/Games/Wibarm-1.png
...Gaussian Blur (x1,5, IIRL) applied. Not as ugly, and the rough "checkerboard" shading turned into shades of the original colors. Blurry, though - next thing I did was to use the Strengthen filter to fix that a bit.

What followed was a series of experiments with a modified verion of the beveled text technique (http://www.tigert.com/gimp/tutorials/beveled_text/). Let's pull a curtain on these sorry mishaps and fast-forward to the results.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v13/the_fifth_horseman/Games/Wibarmfin.png
This I almost decided to be the final version... but last minute change of plans is my speciality.

I'll probably go back to the previous image and re-do the bump-mapping (fortunately for me, I've got it saved as separate layers).

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v13/the_fifth_horseman/Games/Wibarmfin2.png
Experiment with using reverse bump mapping to add a more three-dimensional appearance to the picture. The idea's quite sound, but execution leaves a lot to be desired ATM. Will have to work on it some more.

Final version coming around tomorrow.

Indeed, the only difference was putting a reverse bumpmap on that approximate area. It also covers part of the fist and abdomen.

That's final version A.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v13/the_fifth_horseman/Games/Wibarm1.png
Final version B - the outline was made stronger, and the entire picture was subjected to a reverse bumpmap based on the outline.

I'm still thinking whether to up the gamma on them or not.

The difference between the first and the final images:

Hey Horseman! I'm a great fan of fantasy style...your miniatures are really cool, my favourite one is Raziel!
Let me tell you a question, I've noticed that Hellsing images are very similar to Trigun...
is this the same anime author? Cause IMO Trigun is fantastic and maybe Hellsing too, but I've never seen or read it...what's your opinion? Is it good?

Very nice your last pics!

I have a suggestion for you: using the "selective gaussian blur" (I've traslated from italian, hoping it's called in the same way) applied directly on your original one (2 pixel, 130 radius) i've obtained this:

Nope, completely different producer. As for my opinion... well, the manga is quite good, altough the art style in first volume leaves a lot to be desired (later it gets better).
The first Hellsing anime is unfortunately quite mediocre, both in terms of art and storyline (back then only first two volumes were out, so the producers "made up" a different ending to the story). Current anime - also known as "Hellsing Ultimate" (that's the one the sigbars were taken from) - is lethally awesome. I have a suggestion for you: using the "selective gaussian blur" (I've traslated from italian, hoping it's called in the same way) applied directly on your original one (2 pixel, 130 radius) i've obtained this:[/b]

The first Hellsing anime is unfortunately quite mediocre, both in terms of art and storyline (back then only first two volumes were out, so the producers "made up" a different ending to the story). C

When reading "Bubblegum Zone" (http://www.bgcrisis.com/zone/), I found myself wondering how exactly Sylvie looks in her Hardsuit (first appearance about halfway through episode 9). Based on the rough description in the story, I spent several hours pieceing together a design from parts of the existing official concept drawings and redrawing it where needed. Here's the result:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v13/the_fifth_horseman/GIMP/th_Sylvie.png (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v13/the_fifth_horseman/GIMP/Sylvie.png)
Looks good enough...

...or maybe not.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v13/the_fifth_horseman/GIMP/th_Sylvie5.png (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v13/the_fifth_horseman/GIMP/Sylvie5.png) http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v13/the_fifth_horseman/GIMP/th_SylvieWIP.png (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v13/the_fifth_horseman/GIMP/SylvieWIP.png)
This one is more like it, and I'm already on my way to color it. Some minor touch-ups to the outline as I go.
Upper torso nearly done. Not really satisfied with the highlights on the left side of the breastplate and left upper arm. Will see if I can improve them a bit.

Feel free to compare with the official Hardsuit designs for Sylia, Priss, Linna and Nene:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v13/the_fifth_horseman/GIMP/th_HSSylia.png (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v13/the_fifth_horseman/GIMP/HSSylia.png) http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v13/the_fifth_horseman/GIMP/th_HSPriss.png (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v13/the_fifth_horseman/GIMP/HSPriss.png) http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v13/the_fifth_horseman/GIMP/th_HSLinna.png (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v13/the_fifth_horseman/GIMP/HSLinna.png) http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v13/the_fifth_horseman/GIMP/th_HSNene.png (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v13/the_fifth_horseman/GIMP/HSNene.png)

I'm still learning how to do certain things in GIMP - just yesterday morning I couldn't do a metallic surface no matter how hard I tried. Now, obviously, I can.

And whowever invented using layers in image files deserves a Nobel Prize for Wold Peace. ;) It saved me more grief than I care to imagine.

Something I wrote ages ago, and didn't actually remember it before accidentally digging up my post with it on another forum I'm a regular at.
Don't ask me what it was supposed to be a beginning of - I actually don't remember. :P
Will look up what title I gave the file on my PC (if it's still actually there), and perhaps remember what I actually wanted the thing to be about. Most likely something to do with Warhammer 40k.

For now I post it here so everyone (myself included) can laugh their ass off at it.

Prologue

The universe. Silent, unchanging. And yet teeming with life... Many races have came and gone, many wars begun and ended. Now nothing and nobody remembers them. Their existence was as a blink of an eye to the eternal cycle of stars.
But every once in a while, an event occurs where destiny of millions is forgede by actions of few....

Soon something like that will happen again... a chain of events that can change the future of Mankind... forever.

Space. A blanket of darkness, dotted with thousands upon thousands points of light. They are bright and still as they always were. Just now, a new dot of light comes into existence.
Another star among thousands... but this one is not still... it is moving... it is growing...

...coming closer...

...brighter with every second...

...

...this is not a star...

And then it is gone.

END OF PROLOGUE.

More messing around with Hardsuit designs.
This time, instead of painting all colors on a single layer or painting the highlights on a separate layer, I did it differently.
All flat colors were on the same layer (makes it much easier to recolor parts if neccesary), while the highlights and shadows were produced by painting black and white on two separate layers set to Soft Light (one layer for light, the other for darkness).

Seems I'll have to replace my monitor soon, the one I'm working on is way too dark.

So it's poetry now - bad poetry. Well, sue me.
Sometimes ideas just invade my mind and keep bugging me until I realise them. This happened with this one, a few weeks ago.

Constantly searching, yet never finding
An endless pursuit after the truth
Seeking the reason, looking for answers
What am I? Who... are you?

I didn't name it yet.

I wouldn't name it, to be honest. Untitled stuff is usually cooler than titled stuff of that type. :D Of course, it does sound a bit like Thoth from Marathon Infinity, so it could be called something to do with that... [/shameless plug]

Identity

What am I? Who... are you?

Further, while setting up a Wiki to compile my concepts for "Chrome Dawn", I ended up having to design a logo (couldn't stand having the default Wikimedia one).

And I ended up with this:

Superhuman
This fateful night
Broken you lie
Defeated, dying and bleeding

It's no surprise
For all your might
You still were only human

Burning the eyes
Star falling bright
The wheel of fate is turning

Unearthly light
Brings back your life
This is a new beginning

In darkest night
Wielding new might
Fight for your own survival

Open your eyes
Embrace the sky
Starting tonight you're superhuman

When something sticks in my mind, it's really hard to get rid of it. Especially when I can pretty much hear the vocals and the music in my mind's ear.

"More than Machine"
Don't you see ?
There is more to this world than what you could see.
Don't you feel?
You could be more than they want you to be.
Don't you think?
There's more to your life than their hypocrisy.

Take my hand, walk with me,
Cast away their chains of slavery.

Can't you see?
There are sights your eyes don't let you see.
Can't you think?
There are thoughts your mind doesn't let you think.
Can't you feel?
There are things your heart doesn't let you feel.

Find something in which you can believe,
Or with heart closed you'll die within.

Can you see?
The future belongs to those like you and me.
Can you feel?
The strength to stand for your belief.
Can you think?
It's time to see what you can be.

Have no fear, stay with me,
This is the truth and not fantasy.

Do you see?
Not only humans can dream.
Do you feel?
There is more to what you could be.
Do you think?
Are you human or are you machine?

It's time to know,
That answers you carry already within.

Now you see!
You're neither human nor truly machine.
Now you feel!
With you the battle for future begins.
Now you think!
There is no limit to what we could be.

For the dream! To stay free!
Stand and fight together with me!

Something I wrote down yesterday. I'll have to go over it with a hammer and butcher's knife a few times before it's any good, though.

Darkness, then a hiss.

The suit detects that its' wearer's breathing and heartbeat have stopped. A needle lances through their skin, delivering a powerful combination of synthetic adrenaline, stimulants and painkillers into their system. The mixture would be lethal to a human being - the recipient, however, was anything but that. Simultaneously, the suit begins electric stimulation of the musculature to reinitiate the cardiac and pulmonary functions. Once the drugs arrive at the blood-brain barrier, the synapses begin firing in an expanding chain reaction until...

My eyes snapped open.
I was laying face down on the cracked asphalt, my battlesuit's helmet laying broken amidst the burning debris several meters away. It took a moment to recall the events that led to this.
I lifted myself from the ground using my left arm, the right nothing but a useless charred claw. I was almost thankful the explosion destroyed its' nerve endings. The sharp pain lancing through my innards told me I most likely had internal injuries as well, but that was far from my greatest worry at the time.

I turned my head, looking for my enemy. Did I get him? Was it finally over?
My hopes were crushed as his unmistakable snarling mockery of a human voice sounded from behind me.
"That... hurt, you little bitch."
The shame of failure was bitter beyond words. We've lost. There was no weapon left I could use against him. I scrambled to get up and run, but found my legs too weak to even stand.

A powerful grip closed on my remaining arm, lifting me to face the speaker as his voice raked my ears again.
"Did you really think that little trick would be enough to defeat me?"
The right side of his face was one huge open wound, the metallic "flesh" stripped down from the dully shining bone, flames dancing at the edges of the destroyed area and in the empty eyesocket. I let out a brief smile.
"Made... you... bleed."
His remaining eye narrowed at the words, the response filled with inhuman hatred.
"You might have been spared... before. Now you will watch this city die, and then I will kill you in the slowest, most painful way I can come up with."
His hand tightened its' grip on my arm, dislocating the bones, then crushing them. The pain was excruciating even through the painkilled-induced haze. I heard a scream and realised it was my own.

As I blacked out once again, two questions desperately circled my mind: Where did we make the mistake? When did everything go so wrong?

Darkness.

I like seeing stuff built from concept.

Further work in progress. Might be the end of it because of a save error that nuked most of the procedural save (the PNG version was saved intact, but we'll have to see if that will let me continue working on the picture)

There is no version of Alien Assault for Nintendo DS, and none is planned.
But I just had to make a pair of fake screenshots to see how it could look. :p

A little improvement.
Both pieces done on my NDS using the most recent version of Colors! . And yes, they're not 100% complete yet. :)

This is a possible future logo for Abandonia - it combines aspects of the original logo and my favorite features of several of the postulated redesigns (in particular one by RRS).

Note: I still suck at 3D modelling.
