I have 5 copies of this board game. It's quite fun and I'm looking forward to trying the game out.

I have an aversion against computer conversions of board games. There is usually no point. The complexity of a board games pales when compared to the possibilities of a computer. The only reason to have a computer version is to play against the computer and that is missing the whole point of the board game, to spend time with friends.

I agree with Picard on this one, but it can be fun depending on the complexity of the computer's AI. Think Deep Blue and Chess. Isn't Gary Kasparov the only guy who's ever beaten the computer Deep Blue in a game of chess? If the computer is adequately intelligent, it can be fun. And besides, Stratego is a great game! I used to play it all the time when I was young. I'm definitely downloading it.

I find it fun playing against Fritz in chess...winning is rewarding.
Although I'm trying Stratego to mearly see what it's like on the computer.

I believe quite a few people have beaten Deep Blue by now... since deep blue is already outdated. Israel built the second Deep blue, Deep Junior, which Kasparov also eventually beat.

Kasparov did have to try lots of times with both computers though, if you counted up the number of times one has beaten the other, Deep Blue would be the winner.

This game is so much fun. It kicked my behind the first time through, but the second time, I had it running scared. This is one of the best board games ever made, as you decide your own strategy and where you want to put the pieces. Definently a quality game.

There is an alternative for this game:
Here you can download v.1.8 and connect to an irc channel where you can play with more people.

As much as I like to play this game with my friends, that much the computer version is so lame! :(

note that the following keyboard commands works:
I - replay last action
U - undo last move, which in all reality ruins it
CTRL-J - some joystick calibration?
esc - obvious quit game
i brought out the board game for the 5 and 6 year old and they loved it, made the mistake of buying the civil war version at barnes&noble because it is made from crappy wooden pieces that do not stand up nearly as well, a serious F to the fools that processed that one! Anyway... figured i would take a look a the old game here.
I did attack his 1 General with my S Spy and it had no effect and then when he went in to attack my General he died... odd. But silly Undue button allowed me to retract my loss and hunt down the Spy for the rogue he is...
For kids all I need to do is rig a single icon shortcut to the dosbox running of this game and off they go...
Funny how in 2008 a 5 or 6 six year old will be playing what we did as 10 year olds in the 1970's....
And only buy the original stratego -- DO NOT waste time on the Civil War version. I am surprised this thing hasn't been spun like all the monopoly versions -- NFLolopy, Chicagopoly, and all the thousands of marketed versions...
Stratego is a simple lower number beats higher number with maybe 3 specials: spy, miner, and scout. This can be programmed in GWBasic/BasicA like tic tac toe for jr. high kids in their first computer class... ahhh 2008 and still posting on Stratego.

Aye, it worked for me too! That's exactly why I jumped back here to find out how to beat the copy protection.
