I remember this game from sooo long ago. It was probably one of the first games that I had ever seen. I would have only been a little kid. Dad used to play it all the time.
That doesnt make it all that great a game tho... it annoys me, but it is nostalgic.

One of my first games too....spent endless hours on it(along with Digger, etc).

Think the final stage rewards you with a large number of hearts and a title of sorts. Last time I try to replay that game I couldn't get pass the first few level. Age dulls your senses and reflexes....sigh...

 Somebody need to do something about the timeout

I wanted to dedicate my first post to the eldest game I've played and STILL play HAVING FUN! An Eternal Classic.
BTW, if you are curious to see the end and cannot survive the really high difficulty of later levels, type CTRL + 9 to get 9 brand new lives.
U'll then discover that.....There's NO end at all!

gr8 classic, gives a lot of alternation to with all the different subgames.
This game rocks, but somehow I think you can only appreciate this game if you played it back then, although I'm not THAT old yet :)

You might be right :(
However, congratulations to Kosta-del-sol for uploading such a glorious game between others more "modern" and popular.

P.S: neither I am old :P

A game which has eaten countless of my spare and not so spare time. I walked around here in the Philippines always asking people if they knew Alley cat, I thought there was no one out there who knew about it much less felt the way I did about the game. I'm glad that it's up and let me tell you, it's beautiful! Still, I really hate having to drink the milk from the bowls with the dogs...

This game was truly ace aside from the odd psychotically difficult challenge level once you reached the high difficulties but good fun all the same.

It's a great game! I used to play it back when I was a kid. My favourite part was the giant piece of cheese filled with mice to catch.

No matter how much you think about the age of the game it still sucks. i know that living in the Era of games like DOOM 3 & HL2 it is easy to judge oldies but still this game is not good enough. I bet I wouldn't have played it even back then...If i had been old enough. I love the other cool games that Abandonia has to offer but this game is not one I would waste my time on. X-COM APOC here i come.

Maybe it's because I'm NOT an old fart, but I didn't find much joy in Alley Cat. I mean, I love older games, LOVE EM, but this, this is crap.

The game has no ending and that's my only point of criticism really.
Guess I'm lucky to be an old enough fart to still enjoy this game :bleh:

By the way, this game could really do with a remake of some kind

Alley Cat, one of the first games I've ever played. I really enjoyed a lot and I still do. It's so nostalgic remember those days of playing Montezuma, Dig Dug, Digger and Alley Cat. Trully classic!!!

Funnily enough, I put a post out on smspower.org a while back about doing a Game Gear conversion (in Z80) but this would have meant learning assembly and I'm not quite there yet, due to time commitments, lack of brain, etc.

In any case, it's relatively easy to get a 8086 assembly dump of the game code so if anyone's interested in doing an update please mail me at dodginess@yahoo.com though I'm more up for graphics duty rather than programming, unless it's redone in Flash or Shockwave then I could probably get involved in the coding side as Lingo is a damn sight easier for me to work in :)

On that note, does abandonia have it's own coding group working on remake games?

The original version of this game was written by Synapse for the Atari 800. Synapse was one of the best 800 developers - they also wrote Atari's word processor for them, Atariwriter, which at the time (1982 or 83) was probably the best word processor available for a home computer.

The Atari 800 version of this game looks much, much better than the cruddy CGA PC version, and the gameplay is much smoother too. You can download Atari 800 emulators off the Internet, and there are sites with whole libraries of Atari 800 games. When it comes to these old games - pre-1986 or so - the Atari 800 and Commodore 64 versions are virtually always superior to the PC versions. The PC was generally an awful game system until the widespread adoption of VGA graphics and standardized soundcards.

I've always thought this was just about the wittiest videogame ever made. That little 30 pixel cat has more personality than you'll find in many of today's high definition XBox or PS2 titles. I can't believe nobody has remade it.

The one thing that i dont like about this game is that to jump you need enertia. when jumping on trash cans that gets kind of hard. great game though.

:D Quite funny when you hang on to the laundry lines and this cat squeaks!

One of the first games I ever played on my dads old IBM Transportable
(Portable was a big word, considering the 20 kilos that it weighed)

My favorites in those days were:
- Loderunner (You really have to try this one!)
- Digger (Oh, yeah!)
- Beast
- Tapper
- PcMan (of course)
- J-bird
- Gato
- many GWBasic games

a marvellous game for the time when it was released... both in terms of playability+addictiveness, as well as technologically

the tech aspect of the game may well be outdated, but the gameplay and the addictiveness will persist... (and this is, what abandonware is about, right?)

marvellous game! i loved to play it on my old ericsson "laptop" (amber monochrome, 5.25" low density floppy drive, no harddisk, and 512kb (yes, thats right, kilobyte) of ram)

i loved it... along with digger and big top, maybe wintergames, too, this game bears some of the findest memories of gaming for me

yes! more hard more hard and then in 1 game (inside of the game) you give the present to the female cat and had 1 end

Tito

But that was no end, was it? You only started again in a harder level. And when there were no harder levels anymore, you repeated the last one.

Does anyone know what to do in that room
where a few dogs are sleeping?
Is there a "mission" to do like in the other rooms?

1984, think about it, this game must have made gamers look like this: :w00t: . A great concept, well executed. It's so different from anything else back then and still is today, over 20 years later. It was probably the first game I ever played that really hooked me because it was more complex then anything else I could find on my uncle's XT computer with a black and white screen ^_^ That must have been in 1987 or so, and things have really changed in the world of computer games since, but Ally Cat will outlive many of todays coffee break games in terms of originality and true FUN!

This was the very first computer game I played, too. I never knew there was a Control-9 shortcut to add 9 lives. The action was extremely fast & difficult.

I hope real mice don't eat green cheese! :bleh:

I loved this game on my ATARI 600XL !

However, while the music wa not noteworthy, the sound-FX were great for that time:

Are there any instructions for this game available online?

arete
16-09-2009, 12:45 PM
Such as? The game itself is fairly straightforward, you have to avoid the dogs, jump up onto the washing lines and into the windows. There are a variety of rooms: a giant cheese (you have to catch all the mice), a room full of dogs (press ALT to drink all the milk), a fishbowl (catch all the fish without drowning or being zapped), break open the cage and catch the canary without the broom hitting you out of the window, and above all avoid the dogs.

After you've successfully completed a room, you get to jump in another levelling-up window and get all the way to the top without the cupids shooting you. Kiss the cat at the top and you'll get a screen full of hearts and ascend to the next level.

That's about it, really. :)

Acethor
16-09-2009, 12:47 PM
Jump onto the garbage cans so the dogs don't eat you :). Tip: You'll have to get a running start to make it easier though.

Zagrebo
16-09-2009, 12:48 PM
I think it's the "jumping into windows" part I have a problem with, I just seem to get hit with things being thrown out of the windows half of the time and my cat has a bad habit of leaping at the windowsill but ending-up falling somewhere on the other side of the fence.

Maybe I just need practice... :whistling:

Acethor
16-09-2009, 12:55 PM
Try turning the diffuculty down... the number of things being thrown will be reduced, as well as the dog's speed and frequency in appearance.

One of the best title musics even though I only heard it on PC speaker. Similar to "Stray Cat Strut" which had been a hit a few years prior.
