Could anyone who has Steam please tell me wether or not the cache files for certain games come with the actual modification required to play it?

Huh? I don't understand the question - you'll have to clarify it a bit.

You need Steam to play Half-Life 1 online. But to do that you first need to download certain files for certain games so you can play them via Steam. Mods for HL can be played via Steam but you need to download some cache files for them (I think). My question is, do the big downloads include the actual mod? If anyone knows a good place where I can get information about Steam, I would be glad to know. :bye:

The mod DLs will install all of the files you need. That simple.
unless the mod install is ultra new I doubt you'll have all the needed files, as they are updated quite regularily. I believe most games on steam have an auto update feature though, so if you download the mod and run it, it will verify your installation and if it isn't up to date will automatically do it for you....not sure if this is answering yuor question tho'..;)
