If he wanted help to fix that, he would be better off asking in troubleshooting. More technical adepts there.

That's nice of you Jaydev, just remember not to go too wild on the clicking. Otherwise you will only cause problems.

I know, the games here are excellent.
I have one question for the staff -- if all donations and clicks keep coming in like they do now, will Abandonia be online for a long time?
Also, can we click both the Clicksor and Google, whats better?

Right now, we are breaking even pretty much, with a few months buffert saved up in case we need to change servers (they mostly require you pay the 3 first months in advance).
Every month it's different.. Last month, we recived 28 US$ from ads only, but luckely the donations coverd the rest.
But if they keep comming as they do now, we'r keeping alive :)

Would it help if I also had some of your adcode on my site? I am allowed to put ads up as long as I keep my host ones as well :)

Probably not. It's the same as if ppl start clicking 20 banners each day. They would just track it down, and kill the entire paycheck and cancel our account with them.
Happend once before, and it's not fun to have 2 months of banner-income annihilated...

If I click 5 times on Clicksor's ads, but I see something interesting afterwards, what should I do ? Can I click on different ads with the same source (e.g. Clicksor) more times ?

Clicking an ad: Only a few seconds worth
Getting games you remember from young: Priceless
So yeah, I'll make sure that I click 2 or 3 times each time I access :D

Fair enough. Will just keep clicking :) And to everybody that uses ad blockers... turn them off when you come here LOL or else you'll be asking where they are and they aren't THAT invisible ;)

The problem with advertisements now is that a lot of people running Mozilla Firefox have AdBlock, the extenstion that blocks ads..I don't have Firefox, but I did and I used to have AdBlock...

Maybe set up a different page with just ads that we can go into and click... isn't porn links paying well? :)

what if you lie about your age?
Abi79
16-12-2005, 01:08 PM
And even if one would not lie about his age, I do believe that porn sites are not very safe (trojans...) and neither is the fact of linking to them. Also, setting up a different page only wiith ads would not help, since people won't bother to go over there and click on the ads. It's much better to leave them here, I say. :)
Lucullus
17-12-2005, 12:07 AM
Of course they can lie about their age... they do all the time :) But I guess that there are no perfect way of getting ads to cover your costs. Just have to rely on the ones willing to click.
2 times per visit should be sufficient and keep the ad blocker software off when you visit abandonia :)

Just get the text under the download bigger and maybe even an arrow to the add to get ppl clicking. I always overlooked the text below the download button untill I saw this thread.
Ppl usualy are to eager to get the game and get blinded by the greed :P
Titan
23-12-2005, 04:16 AM
We'r actualy not allowed to do that either.
If discoverd, they'll annihilate the account.
We've been busted for that once, but got off with a warning, since we honestly didn't know that wasn't allowed.
The point is; they want ppl who have a genuine intrest in what the ad is for, to click... and i don't blame them for that... If the advertisers doesn't sell anything, who is going to buy the ad-space?
If you are using an ad-blocker, it's up to you. If you feel bad about it, you are free to make a donation. It's a free world, and we offer a free service (on the user-end) with no costs attached in any way. No subscription you can buy or anything else, just free. On our side, it's not free however, so we'r trying to keep the site as good as possible, to gain the best sponsors, and increase the chanse of ppl making donations.
Bottom line: We will not try to tamper with any ads, nor tell you to click them (since we'r forbidden by the contract to do that). We'll not resort to popup or casino-ads. We will never get porn-ads. If you see something you might be intrested in, give it a shot, and visit the site. If you find something good = You'r happy, We'r happy and they'r happy. If you don't = We'r happy, they'r happy (since they recived an incommin hit) and You'r also happy, since you contributed to Abandonia anyway.

What about people with ad blockers?I have some sort of one on my other pc and I dunno how to turn that off.
Hi everyone! :ok:
Phew, 19 pages of discussion and I was seriously wondering what it was all about.
Ads? On Abandonia? No, had never seen one or at least couldn't remember. So checked again the main page and the forum, but no signs of something missing. Neither experienced a broken layout, nor found any "[AD]" substitutions by any popup blocker.
I'm using Firefox 1.5 and/or IE without additional extensions/plugins.
The only popup blocker that I have is built into my firewall (Outpost). But this one usually replaces advertising images with the mentioned "[AD]" text. Also there is a whitelist to exclude trusted sites and I had previously added abandonia.com to it!
By disabling the popup blocker or removing "googlesyndication" from the blocklist the ads would eventually show up. So obviously both the whitelist and the text substitution failed.
This is too bad because the only solution seems to be to permanently remove "googlesyndication" from the blocklist. That means that those google ads will chase me everywhere I go not only on Abandonia... Sigh, I don't like that! Hopefully I will find another solution for that problem soon.
To sum it all up: More and more "internet security" solutions have built-in popup blockers. Many user don't even know and care about this as long as everything works fine in automatic mode. I don't think that you can do anything about it.
But as those blocked ads literally vanish without any trace, it would help to know when and where those ads have actually been removed.
So is my suggestion: enclose all ads in a visual frame, add a border or something. Just enough to clearly show the visitors/users if the content (i.e. the advertising image) is missing!
To be honest: I read those hints ("Please support us by donating or clicking on the ads above!") on the download page but I skipped with the notion of it just being some sort of left-over from past times as I did't see any ads... Shame on me! :tomato:
Anyway, keep up your great work!
As a big and long-time fan of classic gaming, I will look to how I can support you in the future. :bye:

Don't worry. A 5€ donation is equal to ALOT of ad-clicks. Quite a few seems to use this method nowadays.
Thankyou for your research/feedback however. Not much we can do about it, unless we host the ads ourselves on the server, and thereby bypass the hotlinking.

Hehe.. since we have a deal with the company who hosts the server that is not listed as a regulare offer, we have some disscount, but it's around 100 / month, that much i can tell you.. so it's NOT cheap

The point is not how much each click does, it's how many ppl can do it once.
I don't mind ppl using ad-blockers.. i can understand that, and seeing how many that have chosen to drop a 5 or 10€ donation, it's ok.
I'm still amazed how generous everyone is concidering we don't charge anything for the usage of the site. It's realy uplifting and motivates all of us to do our best and keep it going.
