I had this game on Amiga, and then came with LA Archive Collectors CD, so I still have it. It's just amazing game, but I never finished it.
I'll give it a try when I'm done with this semester.

Heh only cos he now sports a beard. He doesn't llok like an idiot I think.
But anyways... get this game everyone. If you enjoy adventure games, then this very game must rate in the top 3 of the best adventure games ever on probably 80% of adventure gamers. It is so awesome. My favourites are the bone dance... so rrandom yet so funny and cool, and also the ending which didn't and still doesn't make sense.
For those who don't know, the ending was supposed to be explained in number 3, but Ron Gilbert (the creater of 1&2) didn't get to make it.

can anyone tell me what was sopposed to happen between mi2 and mi3 i just beat mi2 (having already beat mi3 and i cant see how guybrush got into the bumpercar
Havell

I think that is supposed to be left to the imagination, if you think where MI2 ending then it would be logical that bumper cars would be around, how he got to be grown up again and floating in the sea I don't know.

i think monkey island 2 is a great game, but i think its just got a slightly different style to mi1, its hard to explain just what the difference is but its there and its something that would make me only give a 4 out of 5 but its still a fantastic game

This game was great i remember playing it back when i was about 8 on my first pc, however i no longer have it

The first two Monkey Island games, The Secret of Monkey Island and Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge, are no longer available.

Ok I can help you here...
If you read this (http://www.sylpher.com/OldForum/SecretMi.htm) thread (archived from the old AGS board) you will probably spend a whole day, but at least you might be a little wiser in knowing what happened between MI2 and MI3. :) But if you want the short answer, that is Ron Gilbert (developer of MI1 and MI2) didn't get to make MI3 and to the developers had to make the game without knowing what the end of MI2 meant either.

For those looking for 1 & 2...
I dont know if its still available but I got monkey island 1 & 2 in a special collecters pack that contained all four games and had 1 % 2 running from a cd.
The only place I ever saw the pack was in Myers though and cost around $60.
I agree also monkey island 1 and 2 are great games :ok:

LucasArts is a dangerous company to piss off. For that reason we will not host or link to any sites with Monkey Island games.
We are considering making a deal with them, but for the moment MI is out of the question.

For those interested the first three games can be bought (most probably legally) at amazon.com and amazon.co.uk.
amazon.com:
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detai...ce&s=videogames (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00005B441/qid=1115432834/sr=1-4/ref=sr_1_4/102-0629220-4676102?v=glance&s=videogames)
amazon.co.uk

I can understand and agree with those who believe MI1 and 2 should be abandonware, I myself having gotten them of the net long ago (don't know where). But I also understand why abandonians are reluctant at uploading them, Lucasarts beeing the anal-retentive company it has become.

Do you think so? Why? This game is longer, the graphics are better, you can go to more different places and the music is great. Although I liked Monkey Island a lot (it was one of the first games I played), I've probably played Monkey Island 2 a great deal more often.

You're right, those were all great moments (my personal favourite was Guybrush's Sierra death :D ), but Monkey Island 2 has great scenes as well. I'm too lazy to search the web for screenshots now, but (in no particular order) what about the tongue-twisters? The rat in the vichyssoise? The spitting contest? The monkey-wrench? Guybrush at the fancy dress party? The "She named the dog Guybrush??" scene? The dancing skeletons? The envelopes in three different colours: manila, vanilla and gorilla? The visit to the street from Monkey Island 1? Stan selling the coffins? The books in the library catalogue?
Those may not be legendary, perhaps, but they're definitely memorable.:)

I had a question regarding MI2. MI1 (CD version) has awesome CD quality music. Was MI2 ever released in the same manner, or is midi music all it ever had? If they ever rereleased an enhanced version of MI2, I'd love to get my hands on it. Thanks!

Sorry, no. There is a LucasArts package that the games are on a CD. MI2 is included. I don't know whether the music is different. ebay for it (http://www.ebay.com). :) Or look on The International House Of Mojo (http://mixnmojo.com) for more info. I don't think there was a CD version of MI2 released on it's own.

Thanks Bobbin, they have all the versions listed on the 'house of mojo' site. The music is the same for all versions of MI2. Too bad they never enhanced it, it would have been great :(
(My two cents worth) MI1 is definitely my favorite (but it was the very first RPG I ever played on a PC, so it holds a special value for me, hence the bias :D) Never played MI3 or 4, and I don't want to either :P

"The Secret of Monkey Island" an RPG? MI1 is my favourite ADVENTURE game!

The ending is simple. It answers the question in monkey 3 you are stuck in the carnaval of the damned called Big Whoop mistakened to be a child. In the third game you escape from this carnival with a bumper car. This carnival is on monkey island. Rememberin no. 1 you walk into hell through the giant monkey head. The Big Whoop carnival was built over it.
All these questions will be answered in Mi 3.

or perhaps LucasArts?
Actually though, I do agree. ESA is spending insane amounts of money and time to threaten, sue, and otherwise prevent people from hosting anything that they protect. This is fine for things that need protecting, but, for some reason they seem to be a bit obsessive about it to the extent that they insist on still protecting things that not only are no longer being sold, but, in some cases where the original company that made it no longer even exists! I think I have even read about some case where an original author really wanted to release it to the public, but, the ESA wouldn't allow it. Heck, Sierra stopped selling games like Quest for Glory or Gabriel Knight (god I wish there were more games like GK1) a long time ago after all. In fact, Sierra as those of us in here know them no longer exists. Now it's just a name to stamp on a box (they officially closed the doors more than a year ago now I think.) Of course, that doesn't prevent the ESA from not allowing people to download those classics. Many people will never be exposed to this quality of game because the only option to get it is to dig all over the internet and to maybe buy some old used scratched up CD off of ebay or give your credit card information to a company running the cheapest site you've ever seen. Many just aren't going to do it, but, would gladly give such things a shot if it were just a free download. (This especially annoys me because, besides the fact that people like me who remember these old things can't go back and get them if we lost our original discs, there is also the fact that since people aren't exposed to the kind of quality you used to get, they think games like Halo are the greatest thing since sliced bread, when, in fact, they are just a different way of slicing the stale old bread that has been around since 1990 or so whenever Wolfenstein 3D was released.)
All that said, they can't let you put up links, so please don't do so. It's not their fault, but, if they allow people to start posting links to a game that's no longer sold in any form but is protected by the ESA, the ESA will get on their backs about it with threats or even actual lawsuits (and typically people who provide free services funded only by a small banner can't afford to keep providing services AND pay off lawsuits...) The fact is, the sites that do allow links go down and the links go bad in a hurry, so I know you might be thinking that it's better to let a link be on here, but, it will get cut down so fast that it's generally worthless anyway.
Anyway, back on track a bit. I had been meaning to try these games out sooner or later, but, I must admit I just never got around to it. I picked up a couple of CDs a good while back (sorry, don't remember where anymore) and have never gotten around to it. Now that DOSBox is starting to get reliable (somehow ScummVM just doesn't seem to be right for me) and I get nice things like 2xSaI shaders while the games actually run an acceptable speed, I'm starting to dig out old discs. I think Monkey Island 1 and 2 will be one of the first things I dig out. Speaking of which, why does only Monkey Island 2 seem to be on this site?
Hey there, I was wondering if anybody could tell me what site I could buy either Monkey Island, or Monkey Island 2 at? I used to play them on my mom's amiga as a kid, and would really like to have it again. Any info would be awesome.
Thanks

If you run the monkey_k.exe file instead of the other one, the copy protection screen will allow you to enter any values and get through (this _k executable is modded so that a compare-jump somewhere was replaced with an unconditional jump, I think).
This is a bizarre game.. I've been curious about it for some time so I downloaded it to try it out, but I just don't think it's so great as everyone's been saying.

damn, :( i would have liked to played it again. I had it on Diskette - but they dont work anymore.
It is ok, that they protect their products (lucasarts). But then they should also be avaliabe on CD in the stores as a monkey island collection i think.
I just think it is unfair to not market it, or make it avaliabe (unless it is on the market, i havent checked :tomato: )
They should market it in a collection with all the 4 monkey island games, like they did with the collection they marketed with "Grim Fandango" "Sam and Max" "Full throtlle" and "the dig" a few years ago. If they put it in a cheap box-set, then ill be happy to support real quality-games by actually buying it.
I just cant stand that they keep them from us in every legal or practical way.
These games are part of sub-culture, they are a part of our lives. Just like movies, they need to get preserved. So they should make them avaliabe. Free, very good, or for a cheap price, which could be OK.
Either way: i hope lucasarts decides soon. We have the right to play such a cool game :bleh:
PS: besides guybrush, Vodoo-lady, buisness-Stan, Lechuck and Elaine are there other people from the game, who was in ALL the first 3 games??

I think Herman Toothroot returns as well. But I'm not sure.
I've recently played Monkey Island 3 and I'm quite sure Herman Toothroot wasn't there. Those four characters are the only ones that appear in the three games, I think.

toothrot appears, thought its not the live one, but rather the puppet one. hes in the leChucks rollercoaster...
then, theres the three men without morale (pirates).
they appear as themselves in no. 1 and 2; and they act out as barbers in part 3... (eventhough its not mentioned its really THEM, but they are so similar, its got to be them... the big strong one with the beard, the slick one with the moustache and the small, fat, bald guy... its GOT to be them...!)

get scummVM (try google on that buzzword) and dont care about the codewheels.
or cut the code-wheels out, align them on each other, cut out the marked areas on the smaller one and enter the amounts of each ingredient...

It really is saliva as you put it.
The game had a spitting contest (who can spit the saliva further).
Good luck translating!

In Monkey Island 2 I used paper on Largo's spit, then i went to wally's house and picked up another piece of paper. Though i disapears later when you give the voodoo woman the paper with Largo's spit on it.

Yes, that's because you only need the paper for picking the spit up. After that you don't need it anymore and it dissapeares from the inventory. If you'd need it, it would still be there.
And don't worry, you asked in the right place - game discusion for a game. :ok:

thats not true, you DO need the paper later on, exactly the one you carried largos spit around with.
Guybrush writes down something on this paper that will spare you a lot of searching at a later stage of the game... dont want to give too many hints, in case someone wants to puzzle it out... but its a riddle that can make your ... headbone... hurt, if you dont read guybrushs notes...
as to the question:
you WILL need the paper largo spat on
you will NOT need another paper you may have picked up from wallys place, thus guybrush drops this...

I recently played through Monkey Island 1, 2 and 3. MI2 was completely ridiculous! I mean it was still funny/entertaining, and it looked and sounded great... but some of those puzzles were insane. I don't like when the only way you can solve a puzzle is by just trying every random object from your inventory in random places until something works that seems to make no sense anyway... especially when your inventory is huge. MI1 and 3 had some of that too, but it seemed like they were more helpful in giving slight nudges in the right direction. I know that without the walkthrough in MI2 I would NEVER have thought to [SPOILER] put the picture of Kate Capsize over your wanted poster (why would you want her arrested? she seemed nice!) or to use the monkey on the waterfall valve or whatever. I get it, monkey wrench, but come on. (Poor monkey!) And it goes on.
Anyway I don't mean to sound too grouchy, as overall I still really enjoyed the humor of the game and it did have a lot of classic moments. I laughed out loud when Guybrush started bopping along to the skeleton song. I just didn't feel the satisfaction that I did after MI1 (and that totally unsatisfying ending didn't help either!). Am I the only one that thought the puzzles were unnecessarily convoluted?
Oh well.

Agree that the ending of MI2 was disappointing, but I don't remember the puzzles being that far fetched. I remember the monkey, and it made perfect sense (then again, I might be completly insane). Some puzzles I remember as being hard, but not really far fetched. It's all about your line of thoughts, I suppose.

I always felt that MI1 and MI3 were better than MI2, but there we are.
Murray (my namesake) was absolutely hilarious, although MI2 did have its brilliantly funny moments, as lazylisa said above, the dancing with the skeletons was classic.

Just my opinion, but I'd have to agree: I thought M1 was the best, and the humor in M2 was generally pretty tired. M3 was almost as good as M1. I'll never forget that pirate chief with his sad tale of how "real men never bend their knees" when picking heavy objects up. :D
I didn't like MI4 like the other 3, however my favourites are the first and the second.
Now I'm playing the second...I have just participated to the match for spitting.
Absolutely lovely :D.

Seriously? Did you play MI1&2 after MI3 perhaps? Because i found MI3's humour really tired - using old jokes (the singing barbers to only name ones) to the extreme. The more detailed graphics took away the feel of the game too - it was more Broken Sword now in feel.

While I prefered the look&fell of MI1 and MI2, I did like MI3 more than MI2. The beginning of MI2 was ok, but the end part... Really weird. MI1 was the best of the three, but the others were fine, too.

I agree with most of you guys, I'd rank the games the same way... I still feel that some of the puzzles in MI2 were just a little too much, but maybe it was just me after all. I didn't have a hard time with the other two so maybe I just wasn't in a twisted enough state of mind when I played MI2. :)
SPOILER: However, I'm not sure why I felt bad for the monkey and for Kate, yet rather enjoyed nailing Stan into the coffin. Hilarious scene... "Thank God this is the deluxe model" hehehe.
I didn't like the Monkey puzzle too, but about Kate, well you can always open the jail with the key ;)

I guess opinions differ vastly then.
Recently played the first three in sequence. Personally I thought MI2 was easily the least enjoyable of the bunch :wondering:
I liked MI3 best myself. Although that's in part due to the hilarious voicing. Remove that and I'm torn between 1 and 3.
I think the best one is the first. Fresh jokes, great ambient and sound for the time and all that. Then the second, which added more freedom of movement and yes, harder puzzles. About the third one, it didn't felt that good to me. It was like a dated remake of the previous ones, with too many cliché characters and self references to the saga.
DeathDude
12-01-2008, 03:19 PM
I think the 1st game is a classic no doubt, the 2nd one was a bit different but still classic and the 3rd one brought it full circle, probably my favourite of the 4, but 1 is right up there too, the voice acting did it for me too, especially Guybrush, Murray and LeChuck, Elaine not so much, but they fixed that in #4.
MinigunFiend

Personally, self-references in games like Monkey Island do nothing but add to the humour - the particular instance that sticks in my mind is in MI3 (I think?) when you stick your head out of a hole and reappear in a scene from the original game. I laughed pretty hard at that.
Mighty Midget
13-01-2008, 03:08 PM
Agree with Minigun here. With these self references it becomes sort of a meta-game which can be hilarious at times. One good example is that one mentioen above.

Well, in the case of Monky Island they acctually try to sort out the story. I mean, without LeChuck's Revenge (MI2) Monkey Island would be a great straight forward pirate adventure with a lot of humor. But that whole amusment part theme made everything so unnessesarily wierd it's a real shame that was allowed to happen (even though MI2 is still a great game). It took the series into a dead end street it's trying to escape from in a somewhat successful mannor, but so far it's still quite obvious they had no idea where and how to take the game from that point at the end of part two.

Jeez, another one.
The fact that LucasArts has left ESA doesn't mean their games automatically become free.
Our past experience with that company dictates we are very careful when dealing with games they published, so rather than act the way we usually do, we'll have to politely ask them for their permission first. Which might take a while.

There were some developments. LucasArts was member of the ESA, and we made a deal for protection 15 years (for "common" games) to unlimited (for special games) which we consider as still valid till stated otherwise. As of May 23 2008 LucasArts left the ESA, and we haven't had a dialogue with them yet. Would be difficult anyway since the old deal went via the much more cooperative ESA.

Just bought the new Tales of Monkey Island series. As soon as I got the info on that I had to go and buy it, because I love the series so much. The first Monkey Island I've got, eh, non-originally :embarassed: from a friend of mine. I loved it so much that I had to go and get the original game, just for the sake of having it, but that was after finishing it and getting the LeChuck's Revenge. I still have the whole series in they're original boxes, somewhere on the shelves, but I can say that this is, in my opinion, the best game in the genre ever created. And I'm talking about the LeChuck's Revenge. Never enjoyed much the newer graphics, but I love the story and the mood so much I just don't care for the terrible 3D graphics.

I loved LeChuck's Revenge. Murray the talking skull was my favourite. That and the evil undead beard. "I'm Guybrush Threepwood, mighty pirate!" "You don't say..." Had it on an old 486 we bought years ago, when Pentiums were still the Next Big Thing. :) Maybe they'll release a compilation of all the old Monkey Island games as a tie-in to the new one.
