This is a great game. The first adventure game that really hooked me into the genre. I have played it through twice, yet never gotten the maximum amount of points. Glad to see it's made the roster.

How to get maximum points...

DIFFICULT!

When I played through it, my highest score can be seen in the last screenshot. And it is WAY below the max. Maybe it is because I shot one of the pixies?

Been DLing from Abandonia for awhile now, and also been searching for this game since about a year ago. And hey hey it just pops up here ^_^ Thanks guys

I still have that game on floppies somewhere :)
was a nice game I got stuck when I had to change into a tree or so :)

Havell

I'm stuck on the part where you have to give gemstones to the monk, the gemstones guide with the game isn't much help as none of the riddles are I get asked are in the guide.

Tom Henrik
06-08-2004, 05:23 AM
@ Data
Those days are over. I have made a complete list over the Druid names for all the trees, and also the Druid Hand Codes so that you know how to say the names.

@ R Havell
Tell me the questions you get.
There may be flaws in the Gemstone Riddles document. The reason? Well... I had to break the copy-protection as I played it. I could not find any solutions on the net. Meaning those riddles are the ones I got. Just tell me the riddles you get, and I will try to solve them 8)

Havell
06-08-2004, 12:56 PM
Couldn't you just upload the appropriate section in the manual?

Tom Henrik
06-08-2004, 01:33 PM
I don't have the manual.

I have MADE them manually. Meaning I BROKE the codes using only my SMARTS and a lot of TIME! So...

Havell
06-08-2004, 01:34 PM
...I should use my brains to break them myself :) .

Tom Henrik

For all the people wondering how to get maximum points, I found a guide. A big spoiler but if you don't want to know, don't read it:

In the fair where you have to find the correct coat of arms, the correct coat of arms was not the one listed on the site, I got the one with the red lion on a white background. It said it was the Cornish coat-of-arms, maybe in the manual there are many coats of arms for different things and it randomly asks you to identify one of them.

Tom Henrik
06-08-2004, 06:19 PM
That might be the case yes. Well, I have to make a complete list then :)

Havell

I know I should probably post this in the troubleshooting section, but I seem to find I get a quicker response when I post it under the game discussion, :P . Anywho, robin's head keeps moving back and forth like he's in a seizure. Second, whenever I go to the save screen, the game freezes on me, if anyone could help that'd be great!

Same problems as above. D-Fend helps with the Head thing and gives it the sound back, but trying to save causes the application to crash

auhsor
09-08-2004, 08:11 AM
The head moving thing was something that affects all sierra games from that era. It was caused by the way the game measures the clock speed or something. More info (well quite alot of info actually) is found here: http://www.spacequest.net/misc/timerissues/index.shtml

When I played this game ages ago I downloaded part of the manual from somewhere. I uploaded it to my site, and you can get it here: users.tpg.com/lukinso/Conquest of the Longbow - Manual stuff.pdf
Feel free to put it on this site, cos it's not really mine.

I've got the game running fine, but has anybody else had trouble with the part where you have to wait by the oak tree for Mr. Green, (or something like that) to arrive? I know that you're supposed to capture a pixie, but they never show? what's up?

Havell
29-08-2004, 11:17 PM
Are you waiting by the tree? Because they don't come there, you have to go out into the forest (one of the screens where there is just a forest clearing), if you wait for a while there then one should show.

31-08-2004, 01:27 AM
I hate the pixie! I hate him! So, now that I finally got him to show up, (thanks!), catching him is literally impossible! The net will never fall in the right place. I've been literally been at it for two days. I think it might be my touch pad mouse. How has every one else managed this?

Tom Henrik
31-08-2004, 09:47 AM
I use a mousepad too ;)

The trick is to throw the net just in front of him. And there is no trick what so ever involved in finding the pixie. Just go into the forrest and wait. He will appear after a little while, and if you miss... just wait a little longer. He always shows up.

I downloaded this game yesterday and spent a couple of hours playing it last night; it's a lot of fun. I'm enjoying it so far, the only problem is that when I get to the scene where Marian is being attacked by the monk, I shoot him with my bow and as he falls down I get booted out of the game. Every time. It's seriously ticking me off, because I'd like to keep playing. Has anyone experienced this before or have any idea how to fix it?

Tom Henrik

NEVER heard of that one, but you can let Marian die in this game...

Tom Henrik

That is one of the finer points of this game. It doesn't have to have a positive outcome

Sometimes I think you guys are evil. otta write one nasty story or something. maybe a nasty evil game.......ahh whatever. and about the crash thing. I'd say thats just pure random stuff. try redownloading I guess

horsecrazy
06-09-2004, 08:19 PM
I guess letting her die isn't the greatest idea; I got the clothes from the beggar and then went to the cobbler's, but now when I give him Marian's slipper he asks me where I got it and I tell him it fell off Marian when the monk killed her-so he beats me to death with a hammer for letting her die! I guess I'll just try downloading it again.

Tom Henrik
06-09-2004, 08:56 PM
Nasty

Havell
06-09-2004, 09:16 PM
I once tried to complete the game while getting the lowest score possible, you do things like threatening the begger to get his clothes and shooting the fens monk with an arrow instead of fighting him with a quaterstaff (both of these give you -100 points).

horsecrazy
06-09-2004, 11:46 PM
You can fight the monk with a staff? Is that later in the game or at the part where Marian is being attacked? I tried re-downloading it and it still doesn't work!! I think I'm going to try it on my sister's computer because mine is just about brand spankin' new and maybe it's having problems because it's an older game.

Tom Henrik
07-09-2004, 12:31 PM
Have you tried the game in dosbox?

horsecrazy
09-09-2004, 01:56 PM
Er...that would be a 'no,' since I don't know what dosbox is. LOL But it did work on my sister's computer, which is an older one, so my computer was obviously too fast for it or something.

does anybody know how to play that game where you're supposed to win amethyst ?

Havell
18-09-2004, 07:35 PM
You have to create a line of three pieces, if you manage this, you may remove one of your opponent's pieces. After all of the pieces have been placed on the board, the players take it in turns to move one of theirs pieces to a spot adjacent to it. The last one with three pieces on the board wins!

Im stuck in the part with the pixie and the green man.
I can't catch the pixie even though the net goes in the right place. It's almost like it jumps over the net. Is there some way to pass this, slow down the pixie or a save game passed this?

Kon-Tiki
23-09-2004, 12:28 PM
The way I did it, was curse like there's no tomorrow 'bout it while talking to a friend of mine on Msn who's played and finished the game. He suggested I send in my savegame files to him and he'd try it, as he's done it before. He started to curse as well, but eventually got it.

Hmmm...

Maybe I ought to open this baby up in SCI Studio and see if I can make it any easier to catch the little bugger.

I have the original manual of Robin and don't mind scanning the coats-of-arms (there are a few and the one required can change) and other information so it can posted. Throw me a bone admin if you think it'll help.

I love this game. Great concept. nice art work, good dialogues. One of those adventure games (like Sam & Max, DOTT and the Space Quests) I like playing again from the beginning. My only problem is I spend way too much time at the start walking around lost in Sherwood Forest looking for Little John! Besides that, a true classic.

I could send you a saved game file past the point where it freezes. There may be a patch for what you are experiencing as some people get odd bugs and others dont... but if you are still having this problem, either myself, or someone already with a save game at that point could send it to you? :bye:

to use the code just grab yourself and then (in this case by the tower) touch your hand to spell out the druid name for the ivy. I think it's gort or something like that, but i haven't played this game in little while.

Ja, ja... Kudos for putting this game up.

One friggin' problem that's starting to annoy me immensely; Every time I save the game on Day 13 (and it might be due to my save slots being full?) and I try to Load those save games after starting the game, or in the game, I get an error message saying "0.SND NOT FOUND" and the game freezes... :ranting: It's balls because it means once I get to day 13, I have to finish the game in one go (which isn't too hard) but it's just a hassle... and just not very nice, Mr. Sierra.

So, yea, anyone heard of this? :help:

Cheers,

to anyone with problems with the game freezing up (during pixie/rescuing marian sections etc):

google for dosbox (it emulates a slow pc), download and install it, then play cotl using it. my game runs fine with it, and i can also listen to the sounds as they were meant to sound, when i configure dosbox to emulate soundblaster.

seriously. it's a tiny program, and fixes all your problems. no need to use other peoples' saves, etc.

I like the game, condemned the pixie, but now I have a REALLY BIG problem and loathe the idea of having to start all over again. I'm supposed to be saving marian from the burninators, but as it appears I've forgotten to make a plan with my comrades, and am already inside st Mary in my oldest savegame.... (if i go to the fireplace, they kill me, if I don't i'll be spotted and the killed, the pub entrance is closed) in other words, whatever I do, I'll DIE (and so will marian, but who bothers?). anyone got me a savegame just before when i'm s'posed to ask the merry men for advice? I hate the pixie. With all of my being, I despise it. The pixie has caused me to miss work, I hear that stupid little pixie melody in my dreams at night. I've noticed other people complaining about it, but I never thought it would be this disturbing, this horrific. My dear God, someone has to help me...

Side note, Tom, you rock.

For those that experience the game "freezing" at the screen where you save Marion from the Monk, or have trouble capturing the pixie, I have sent Tom Henrik (http://www.abandonia.com/forum/index.php?act=Msg&CODE=04&MID=98) two saved game files (Monk is dead, pixie is caught :))

Firstly if you have problems with freezing try DosBox (http://www.abandonia.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=2696), if that doesn't work PM Tom Henrik (http://www.abandonia.com/forum/index.php?act=Msg&CODE=04&MID=98) nicely for one of the following files:

1. Kill Monk to save Marion
2. Captured Pixie

Captured Pixie Notes:
The Coat-of-Arms is Kings of Ireland, but this could change. The pixie will lead you to the "Greenman". If you get stuck on the riddles, here is a link to the solutions. (http://www.geocities.com/on_looker_77/greenman.txt)

Save game file Instructions:
* I sugguest you installed the game again (eg. \Robin2) unless you want to delete all your previous LONGBOWS.0??/LONGBOWS.DIR files.
* You will recieve two files, the saved game and the saved game directory file. Place them in the main directory. When you go to load the game it will show two files listed in the Restore box but only the saved game file you got off Tom will work.
(Just delete the one with the "interpreter" error - If you got both saved games they both will work).

Files: LONGBOWS.004 (Marion) and/or LONGBOWS.013 (Pixie captured) with LONGBOWS.DIR.

Also another note about playing the board game:
Click your hand on the points where two (or more) lines met each other to place a piece. Stop him from getting three in a row as you try to do the same.
Once all pieces have been placed, move your pieces around (you cannot skip a "square") to form three in a row, then you can remove a white piece. Continue till there are less then 3 white pieces left.

Lastly a Gemstone riddle not in documents:
I must ride upon a firey horse, through valleys filled with adders and seek the fate that awaits me. What should I take?
1. Turqoise
2. Blue with white mark
3. Black

HELLO ALL!
I HAVE SUCCESSFULLY (SOMEWHAT) DOWNLOADED THIS GAME. HOWEVER, WHEN I GET TO THE PART WHERE I'M SPOSED TO SAVE THE GIRL AND FIGHT THE GUY IN BLACK, I CAN KILL HIM, BUT IT SHUTS THE GAME DOWN. I HAVE READ OTHER POSTS ABOUT THIS PHENOMENON, HOWEVER I'M RATHER COMPUTER-ILLITERATE AND HAVEN'T BEEN ABLE TO UNDERSTAND WHAT I CAN DO TO FIX THIS PROBLEM. IS THERE ANYONE WHO MIGHT BE ABLE TO DUMB IT DOWN FOR ME? I SURE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY HELP. THANKS VERY MUCH!

Anybody please help me. I cannot save the game. However hard I try, it just keep replying that my save slots are full. ( but there are nothing in it! ) Should I reconfig my dosbox program? How?

Ps. My brother had been playing another game and it can save fine enough, so I really don't know what's the problem.

Thanks in advance

Hmmm....

Check the attributes of your Robin Hood folder - right click, properties, untick the Read-Only box.

Make sure you first of all run INSTALL.EXE, set up the options, I used IBM and soundblaster throughout, then run SIERRA.BAT using DosBox. (http://www.abandonia.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=2696)

DosBos is for WinXp and Win2000, you may not need it if you are using Win98.

after 2 days of this attempt to catch the Fairy/Pixie/Firefly on steroids I am wishing to use a grenade not a net. Beyond that though, I love this game!
Bring me back to the days of my childhood.

I have all the documentation for this, I would be happy to offer it if the administators would like it

Yeah they want the manual, they need it in PDF format....

If you dont have a PDF maker, send it my way and i'll put it in the right format and send it to Tom Henrik. I used to have the manual for this aswell, its a pretty nice one with all the Tree names and Sheild types....

This and Kings Quest 4 where nearly the only games we brought back then, they costed a small fortune but the manuals are so neat@!

For all of the people having freezing problems when shooting the monk attacking Marion on day 2:

You don't necessarily need DOSBox. I love troubleshooting problems and, thusly, I stumbled into this relatively easy solution. All you have to do is constantly keep saving the game after clicking bow on monk to shoot him. Do it as quickly as possible when you return to game from previous save. Move mouse to top of screen, click options link, save your game, return to game, move mouse to top of screen, click options link, save your game (same save game name if you wish), return to game, save, return to game save, etc. I know this sounds tedious, but you only have to do it until Marion leaves the screen; not very long at all. Once Marion leaves the screen the game will function as designed. It is certainly worth it considering all the frustration the freeze causes. For those who don't want to download DOSBox or are not proficient on its operation, this is the quick, easy fix.

That was a hard part of the game for me too, the main point is that you want to try to get 3 of your pieces in row, then this will allow you to start taking his pieces, it takes practice but eventually you should get it.

I had the same problem, but I only seemed to freeze when I went to the top of the screen. Thus I went to the forest area to the left of the green man's tree and captured the pixie there. He ran off to the right once I released him, and the game proceeded from there. Hope that tip helps! :)

ESA told us to remove the game. Read why here (http://www.abandonia.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=5252)

Guest_Phoenix

I figured out why the game freezes after capturing the pixie. It only freezes when the pixie leaves to the north. I noticed that it was very difficult to try to get Robin to leave north in the forest. He would keep getting hung up on the scenery and not be able to figure out how to walk north.

So, to capture the pixie without freezing, go to the willow tree and walk north twice and then west until you come to a clearing. As soon as you see the pixie, throw the net down, and he'll fly onto it and get captured. The pixie will then leave to the south, and Robin won't get caught on the scenery.

Hope this helps.

Ok, after starting this game and then forgetting about it for a while, I decided to come back to it and begin playing again, and now I need some help. I'm on day 9 at the very beginning of the day; I know I'm supposed to wander around the forest until the sheriff's men start chasing me, but I've been wandering around for at least a half hour and nobody has shown up yet. Is there a certain screen I need to go to to trigger this part of the game, or something else I need to do before they'll show?

A. J. Raffles
26-07-2005, 07:59 AM
This is probably a stupid question, but does anybody know what exactly those different endings are? And what does it depend on which one you get - just your score, or does the number of outlaws and the ransom you collected matter as well? They should, really, otherwise what would be the point in listing them in the first place?

Doc Adrian
26-07-2005, 07:57 PM
I will have to fire it up and play intentionally bad..but I think that the Sheriff and Abbot can be pardoned and you and your outlaws could get hung for playing poorly and not helping people and the like.

A. J. Raffles
26-07-2005, 08:02 PM
So far I've only managed the "good" ending, the "good" ending minus Marian and the "bad" one (i. e. getting hanged - but Richard spared the outlaws for some reason), and that one was very hard to achieve. It's pretty depressing for an ending, though, so it wasn't really worth it... But I've read somewhere that there are at least five different endings, and I was wondering what the others might be.

I found a site belonging to Christy Marx, who has writing credit on this game, where you can download Conquests of the Longbow and also Conquests of Camelot. I've been playing Longbow and it seems to work fine. Is this likely to be legal? Is it okay for me to post a link here? I know you're not allowed to link to warez but as these are allegedly put up by the writer, I'm confused as to whether they're okay to link to or not.

I mean, if the DESIGNER herself is releasing the game on her site for free? Then we as the "abadonia community" cant possibly be breaking any laws right ?

Well, here you go!! ENJOY - This is my contribution to this site. MY way of "thanking" you abandonia!!!

Even if you are the designer (I'll give you the benefit of the doubt), you still don't own the rights to the game, they belong to the parent company, which is a member of ESA. so any download link is violating their copyright (unless they have permission, which is rare) and so is breaking the law. Tom said something about somebody scanning the manual about a month ago, but apparently putting up scans and boxshots takes quite a while. None of my scans are up yet.:(
Anyway, if I were you I'd send a PM to Tom about the manual in case he wants it anyway. He likes to have all sorts of scans, not just manuals but boxes, disks - anything scannable, really.

If you're finding the nine men's morris bit too hard, you might try setting the difficulty setting as low as possible during that scene. But actually it's quite easy.

I recently started playing the game again after many years and it is still as good a game as it was 15 years ago!!! I remember playing as a little kid and not being able to ge past the second day. I could never find Marion!!!! For some reason I thought that the father oak tree had the ladies slipper!! But now that I can read quite well I can get through the dialouge much better and pick up on little sexual hints throughout the game. I also played through the game with the hint book, so I never picked up most of the plot lines because I knew how to do everything. But now I'm really enjoyed.
I also never realized that their were so many different ways to finsih quests... such as your men rescuing the boys or Little John getting the yoemens clothes or using the hand code to get the password after Marion dies.

God this game is amazing!!!

If I were to offer any advice, I'd say just try set up your pieces so you block his mills' as easily as possible and set yours in sets of 2/3 so you can just move pieces back and forth to take his pieces. I played yesterday for the first time in years and beat him in the first try. Or just lower the arcade difficulty and it's pretty easy.

Or you can just save before you answer (but after the specific questions have been triggered) and keep trying. There's not that many combinations, actually, so it's fairly easy to figure out all the answers that way. For example, the gemstone riddles are fixed from the moment you step into the boat (or perhaps from the moment you arrive at the gate), so if you save at that point, you'll always be given the same riddles. The sequence in which you click the stones won't matter anyway, as long as you get the right ones, so it's really quite easy.

If I remember correctly it's all about where exactly you click on the hand. At the end of your answer click the center of your lower wrist... I may be wrong (my memory has failed me before ;) ) If you re-read through this thread I believe that this problem has been covered before though.

Thanks for the help.

I knew it was the palm i was suppose to click, however, it wasn't working for some reason. I guess my old version had become corrupt? I found a copy of the game on the net and after installing it my latest saved game was corrupt (first hint). Although trying an old save on the old one hadn't helped, loading back and making my way to the tree with this one fixed it right up.

Strange little issue, that tree was starting to drive me nuts.

"Dang" and dang again....I tried playing it after my last post about the game and it just doesn't work. I am still stuck at the Pup trying to get the gem from the old coot. [Remember this is about the fourth time playing without any problems] so why now? Once started I DO like to finish a game :(.

Sorry to necropost this topic, but I looked through the whole thread and nobody answered how to get past the glitch in the Green Man part when nothing happens when you answer. I've tried clicking everywhere, including the center of the palm, and I've tried clicking dozens upon dozens of times. I tried clicking letters until it reset, cause I remember doing that yields a wrong answer, but it doesn't, it brings me back to me standing there. If I talk to the green man the scene starts over and he turns me into a tree again and gives me a new riddle.

The weirdest part is I didn't have this problem the first time I played through. I'm only having it now that I'm trying to get a perfect score.

I'd think that this is an exception to necroposting since there really isn't a better place to post it without creating a redundant new thread.

Have you tried walking off the screen and coming back on or loading to before you caught the pixie? It could have just been a timer issue that didn't reset, or maybe something didn't trigger when Marian showed you how to use the scroll.

Grand Dad
01-04-2007, 11:28 AM
That could be the reason...if you answered correctly the first time you don't face that problem, unless there's a bug! :(

RettMikhal

I posted that under guest, I thought I was logged in.

The bug is even weirder than I thought. After I 'answer' and nothing happens, I can literally move, as a tree... I just slide around, but when I try to leave the screen I just go forever and never transfer screen. I can even shoot the green man, which makes the game freeze. I tried capturing the pixie again, and the same problem happens.

I still don't understand why this happened this time, but not the first time around.

Ok, I need help.

I'm at the Green Man's test. I answer the riddles. Correctly, I might add. I click or press ENTER, both causes my answers to disappear and I end up as a tree.

WHAT am I doing wrong? I've got the hand code memorized by now, yes, I tried it A LOT!

ESA gets paid to shut down software piracy. The definition of that includes Abandonware sites.
And no, they don't just write telling you to not distribute the game... they write telling you to stop distributing the game in 48 hours or be permamently shutdown and subject to a lawsuit.

This game is 16 years old, actually, thus getting out of the protection period that is a result of our agreement with ESA and as such it might be placed back for download any day now.

Hello, Sorry to re-revive this thread. I owned the game way back when I had a 286SX16 and I loved it. Wikipedia brought me to Christy's site where I redownloaded it.

I'm stuck in exactly the same way I was stuck 17 years ago... I'm at the abbey, I grabbed the robes, but I can't figure out how to get into the hedges, or to get to a room where I am supposed to talk to a monk and get a casket for wine.

Help? I move to the top of the screen and it doesn't go to another screen, if I try to click higher, it brings up my 'controls'. Where am I supposed to click?

I remember just going to the northern most part of the Church, and it should bring you to the center with the pews and the stained class windows. From there just go to the right side door and follow the hedgemaze, follow an FAQ to find a map.

To get the casket, you need to go into the southern left room of the church, where you'll find the abbot drinking. He'll ask you to bring him another full casket. Make sure to play the drunk man at the bar and win.

I've read this whole thread and multiple walkthroughs, searched Google, etc., can't find any answer to my problem. Hopefully someone here can help!

I'm on Day...12? The Sheriff's men are sweeping the forest again. I can walk around my camp, the widow's cottage, the outlook, Watling Street, and the willow grove unhindered. But the second I walk into any part of the generic forest or the oak grove, I get the "stop hand" cursor and am instantly attacked by soldiers -- thus I'm unable to run, access my cursors, or turn into a tree.

To clarify, I'm not stuck on the mechanics of turning into a tree. I was quite successful with the hand code the first time while escaping the soldiers. But the second time doesn't even give me the chance to try. Is this a bug, do I need a slowdown program (I'm already using DOSbox), or am I missing something?

Thanks!

Very strange  I've played the Amiga version without problem and the only things that may be different are:
1) i simply run on a location with one druid tree and automatically Robin will be transformed into a tree (no need of code  ).
2) the amiga emulator automatically set up the perfect speed (of the amiga processor) so the game run at the right speed.

I don't know if even in the PC version is possible to run on a location with a druid tree and automatically be changed onto a tree..... try... just in case

Try also to slow down Dosbox speed, i remember that if i had lost even only few seconds ... sherif's men caught Robin and the game is over (so if your PC/Dosbox speed is too high the game run so fast that you can't do nothing).

Jus'Me
28-09-2007, 02:04 AM
Thanks for your tips, Incappucciato d'Ombra. PC version doesn't seem to give you any help -- no automatic tree-morphing! I also tried slowing everything (in-game speed and DOSbox speed) way down, which made the game crawl but didn't fix the problem. I ended up going back to a saved game, just before the first time the Sheriff's men swept the forest. Rather than going to the Ancient Oak (where the Green Man lives), as I did the first time, I went to the Ash Grove SW of the widow's cottage. Played the game through to the second sweep, returning to the Ash Grove, and had time to run, access cursors, and turn into a tree again. Problem solved! Must've just been a weird bug/glitch I ran into. Hopefully this will help anybody else who might have this same problem. :D

You cannot see the download link simply because the game is still protected, instead of the download link you can see the "ESA- NO GO" picture :) (or is a link? then perhaps i verify :p)

As for the post of CBK, i think that must be verified and only then the download link will replace the esa no go :)

I have recently downloaded Robinhood. I had this game over a decade ago as a teenager. I never beat it, but I found it again on here and am trying to get it to work! I have downloaded Dosbox and know how to use it basically. My problem is, the Robinhood version you download is the pre-installed version. how can I install this?

Thank you to all for your time and help,

You can fight the monk with a staff? Is that later in the game or at the part where Marian is being attacked? I tried re-downloading it and it still doesn't work!! I think I'm going to try it on my sister's computer because mine is just about brand spankin' new and maybe it's having problems because it's an older game.

Abandonia.com's version is 1.1. I'm not sure if this is the latest version ever released. This game still crashes at random times due to "Out of handles!" :notrust: The errrors are probably due to a limitation with the SCI engine itself. Well, that's another reason to save your game!

You can only fight the Abbey's monk in brown robes with Little John's quarterstaff. The exact time clicking the walk cursor determines which monk appears on Watling Street first. Don't take too long! You can also visit Watling Street by clicking the hand cursor on it, as if you can just grab & pull it towards you. Don't worry about meeting the "wrong" monk, because you'll meet the other one tomorrow. You need to meet both of them to finish the game.

Speaking of playing as an Abbey monk, does anyone know of a good first move or general strategy for winning Nine Men's Morris? I remember searching and finding an entire solution on the Internet somewhere, but there's no hints at all in Abandonia.com's walkthrough.

How to get maximum points...

DIFFICULT!

When I played through it, my highest score can be seen in the last screenshot. And it is WAY below the max. Maybe it is because I shot one of the pixies?
I don't know how he did this, but some player INTENTIONALLY finished the game in the worst possible way to see the worst possible ending. Not only did the outlaws fail to add to the puny 300 ransom they started with, the merry men actually LOST 10 outlaws & only scored 980/7325 points! You must do everything Robin Hood doesn't stand for. (make people mad, kill peasants, & letting Maid Marien die & not resurrect her)

He's posted the worst ending on YouTube.com http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ay5sdkzCkNo&feature=related

Just finished the game, really liked it a lot, except that I lost some points by turning the arcade level way down. :) I was tired of being hit by falling rocks on that damn tower!

I love how Sierra will find a way to inject some humor into even the most "serious" games. This is what happened when I was disguised as a monk, and I clicked the hand cursor on the other monk in the abbey:

Sometimes Sierra's VGA games tend to do this for no reason at all. Try saving your game near the point where it crashes and then reload and try that part again and see if it works.

I've tried that several times. I've saved my game right before I shoot the monk and re-loaded and re-played it as many as five times and it continues to happen.

What makes it even more frustrating is that I have the floppy discs. I'm not running the game on DosBOx I'm running it straight from MsDos.

Does anyone have any other suggestions?

You could try, sometimes, to lower the level of detail to the minimum and now I don't remember if speed to the bottom or to the top. Usually, those settings help me at those weird error that used to plague Sierra games :(. That was one of the very few thing I had against Sierra games :). Also, going to a save game a bit earlier in the game and trying other things firsts? A lower success rate than the other tip, but sometimes the memory misstep (I suspect it is this) turns inoffensive.

My other favorite error was "Oops! You did something we didn't expected" and crash to DOS. It was specially fun when it happened once at the end of the animated sequence at the end of the trials of adulthood of the Simbani in Quest For Glory III :D

Use DOSBox. Running out of handles is usually caused by real DOS limitations. You could try to increase the number of the FILES environment variable under DOS but DOSBox does not have such limitation AFAIK. Otherwise, it's a known problem with Sierra games and quitting the game and then reloading a previous save can solve the problem (do NOT just reload in the same game).

This is one of my favorite adventure games! I remember playing this as a kid and being stuck for hours at certain spots but determined to pass it.

I tried my best a few days ago and got about 7100 or so points. I think choosing to have arcade mode turned off is why my score was not higher. I played it using the scummvm engine on my Motorola Xoom and I've found this platform to be the most enjoyable experience as all you have to do is touch the screen to play.

After beating the game I played the 'worst' I could by threatening everyone I could with the arrow and making sure as many outlaws die as possible. I ended with 12 outlaws and 300 randsom. But I did not find a way to kill Maid Marian. I tried to let her die in the fire when she is condemed as a witch but when I got to the place she is burning at and I was about to open the door the game says, "Where is Will, he should be blowing his horn." Then instead of letting me enter, the busy hand comes up and it freezes. I've tried it many times with the same result. Perhaps there are so many combinations in the game that the programmers might have missed a few and so the game doesn't know what to do and freezes.

After Marian is saved from the fire I tried letting her die in the willow grove, but it comes back to bite you on the 13th (last) day. If she is dead then when you try to pass the river to go to the Monastery the willow-o-wisps will tell you it is not in their plans and they wont let you cross, but in any event you'd not have the password you need to pass at the end. Also you are warned by your outlaws that you're basically doomed, so I'm wondering how people are able to kill her?

Does anyone know what to do when I get an Interp .Err in Dosbox? I've re-downloaded the game and it's still happening. Whatever .exe or .bat file I try to run, other than Install, it gives the same result.

Did you download the extras? From what I remember they have all the games copy protection in them, you are going to need most of them. Druid Hand codes, Tree names, Coat of Arms and I think Gemstone riddles.

Was wondering if someone could point me in the right direction--any help would be appreciated!

Just downloaded the game, but find I am unable to save--I get an "illegal action" message. Do I have something on the wrong setting? Is there something else I have to download?

I have a feeling the answer is pretty simple, but my brain is pretty wrung out at the moment. Also, if this is the wrong place to be asking, please let me know where to go to get the answer.

Thanks! :)

Hey, I'm running Windows 7 and I downloaded the game today. However, when I tried to install it, Windows told me that it's not compatible with this version of windows. Will dosbox fix that issue?

As far as documentation goes, I still have the original box, manuals, and inserts for this game. I could scan them--if there is any interest, let me know! :)
