Why do you want to go to all the trouble of getting drivers and stuff, when the game runs perfect in DOSBox? ;)

Does the game have speech? Because I get a message that my audio files fail to initialize when i start the game.

To fix the audio thing, run it in DOSBox. If you're already doing that, just give it less cycles.

In order to download the right patch to fix the freeze after the park scene, is this the diskette version or the CD version?

Tuttle

The disk version. You shouldn't need to download the patches though -- there are two zip files included within the download from this site that contain patches. Just grab any .hep, .scr and .voc files out of those two zip files and drop them into the Police Quest directory (don't bother with the install script in the Bert one).

I am not sure I get your question, but as far as the executables go, look for files with .bat or .exe extensions. Chances are you should run one of these in DOSBox.

I downloaded DOSbox on the previous posters' advice to play this game..

Originally, I tried to install the game, mounting drives as A: and C: in a vain attempt to install the game as I installed others like it in the mid 90's.

Don't do that..

Just run the game after dearchiving. It will make life a lot less painful ;) The sounds work fine without installing the game, much to my amazed disbelief.

And, as the previous posters noted, copy the .voc and .scr files from the archives in teh patches dir into the game dir (folder), and it should work fine (so they say, I'm not far enough into it to know).

If you download the game from this site, it includes a file called "PQ1 VGA Codes.txt".

:ok: A fun thing is that in the café after the accident, there is a typing miss in the speech.

Can't help you there, I'm afraid. The game's ESA-protected.

By the way I played Police Quest 3 a long time ago, on BIG floppy disks, and just loved the game... now I downloaded PQ 1 in VGA and just got assigned to the narcotics!... its very similar to PQ 3 (well in VGA). Its fun to see that you actually learn from these games, after going throught one of them you just get good at knowing police procedures to use for the other episodes. (dont forget to read rights!... these scums still have rights!)

Anyway happy playing, as for me I've got a heavy narcotic investigation to run!

Erm, does that site have ESA permission to host the games? Because if it doesn't, you'll have to remove the link...

When I run PQ.BAT through D-Fend it says:
Please insert Startup Disk in drive C: and press ENTER.

Anyone know the Label of the startup disk? or have any fixes?

I really fail to understand you peeps... why sweating blood trying to get the game to run naturally (on real dos) when it runs marvelously on DosBox , plus with a smooth beautiful openGl filter to soften the GFX ?

just install the program, open Dosbox.conf in the directory and do 2 adjustments... one in output line and set Opengl , one browsing all the way down the file where it says [autoexec] , you simply gotta tell the program where the directory with your old games is , and if you want, you can add the cdrom too.

Mount C C:\Oldgames
mount D D:\ -t cdrom -usecd 0 -ioctl

Piece of cake

Hi,

I dont know if anyone is still viewing this thread.....

I bought the XP version of Police Quest collection and played the first one nearly to the end but I'm in Bains' apartment and I cant find the phone in order to get the room number to give to backup. I know this sounds crazy. All of the walkthroughs say it is near the bar. I can't find anything resembling a phone on or near the bar. I've clicked the hand and eye on everything. Any ideas? Explicit instructions would be appreciated.

(I never played the VGA originally, just the EGA).

hi there...

I feel like a dummy asking this, but it seems that I can't download this game because the 'download this game' icon does not appear. Instead there is a 'Entertainment Software Assocation NO 90!' icon, which doesn't download the game...
Really unfortunate, because I have been playing this game a lot during my youth...So it's like nostalgie to play it again! :)

Can anyone help me with this?

Thanks...
