:D Here is a real classic. The grandpa of the little known however absolutely great Patrician II.

One hint for all would be millionairs playing patrician I: Go for lots of ships early. There
is a not too high limit to how many ships may be on the map at one time and the competition is not
sleeping in this game!

One needs a real lot of patience to become Eldermann... I never won the title in P1 without
hex-editing (it's simple) the savegame.

The game works in VDMSound, use that.

An excellent game. The latest release, Patrician III (in the US; in Europe, Patrician II with add-on) is among my all-time favorites.

Hmm, I picked up Patrician 2 a couple of years ago, but didn't really like it that much. I'm gonna check this one out, though. Maybe I'll like it better.

I think I heard something about Patrician 3 a while back. Does anyone know if it has been released or if it's even in production?

Edit: It seems that the zip file contains the game twice. In the patrician folder, there is another folder called patrician, containing the full game. This should probably be corrected, even though the size difference will be less than two MB. There is no reason to squander server space.

Edit 2: The game hangs every time I go to the town scribes office and select record personal data (or the other option). Does anybody else have this problem, and is it important to the game?

Since this is a ripped game with not music and cut-scenes, you must disable the sound-effects, music tracks in the options menu from your office in the very beginning. Gimme a shout if you need addons for this game.

Hey Bobbin: you made me laugh my dash out by catagorizing this game in Simulation genre instead of Strategy. Or, maybe you thought its a trading simulation game. hahaha :tomato:

P.S: I think there is a cheat to get millions of thalers without much trading, interested?

The Patrician III is the US release of The Patrician II with Addons. In Europe it is known as "Rise of the Hanse". A real 3rd part of the series is not yet officially in production , as Ascaron is developing the Sacred sequel at the moment, but the Ascaron forums speak of some "secret projects", and who knows...

You may laugh, but that is exactly what I thought. I find it quite hard sometimes to categorize business simulations into Simulation / Strategy, as you can find good examples for them in both categories. What makes Merchant Prince, Ports of Call or Transport Tycoon more of a simulation than The Patrician? The game would've fitted into Strategy as well, however.

Right-click until you are in a room. You will find on a table 2 books and in front of them 2 objects, I think. Left-click on the left object and a menu should appear.
In it you can save, load, quit ...

Happy playing ! :max: :ok:

I am new to this game. What is the function of an office? How to prepare a feast? My guests has always been starved and thirsty. How to fund a church? Why need to join a Guild? Convoy??? Never heard of it!!!
I have googled "Patrician manual" but no available.

Wow, THIS is great news. I spent more time on this game than on any other. After my floppies broke, I bought a CD version, which has other music. I LOVED the midi-tunes and I am very excited to have an original copy of the game again.

@guest

Whenever you bild a ship, you sign a contract. Nothing happens at first, the ship will be available after it is finished.

@flop

The scribes office is just for information. On my original system (386), a visit there sent data about my game to the printer (ships, warehouses and so on). However, it does not seem to work under Windows.

A BIG THANK YOU to Bobbin.

I have googled "Patrician manual" but no available.

The function of an office or "kontor" is, as in most business simulations, to center your main activities in the game. You buy and sell goods here. The second function is to give you some statistics, which might help you with your progress.

To prepare a feast you simply have to store goods like beer, wine, fish, meat and grain in your storehouse. The more goods stored, the better your feast will be.

You may spend some money to provide extensions to the local church, or to feed the poor. The first gives you popularity bt the church, the second by the people.

Convoys may come useful as the game progresses and the pirate's activities rise. Convoys have so called orlogue ships, which are heavily armed and defend your ships and good from raids.

You need to be member of a guild to be able to join a convoy. In addition to that you gain favor in politics.

Thanks for the tips Bobbin, I'm sure it'll help me if noone else. :OK:

The game seems pretty good, but not very intuitive, so a few pointers are always welcome.

@Sylvester: Thanks a lot, it all makes sense now. Luckily I don't care about printing anything from the game, nor do I even have a printer, so I'll just never ever press any of those tabs again. :)

Thanks Bobbin for your answer. I restart Patrician and now have problems trying to build an office. Instead, I found near Guild office the black windows says about the cost of building a warehouse. I also notice that at the small open book I could build, but whenever I press left click, then right click, the build option disappeared.
And how many officers are needed for each office? I don't know either.
Oh yes, I must agree that this game is not very intuitive, but hey, it's a good game.

I've got a few questions about this game that I can't seem to figure out. First, I can never seem to build a new ship, no matter where I am, or whether I have the needed materials or not. I always end up sailing all over the place, getting what the shipyard tells me I need, and when I finally have all of it I go back and it says I need more stuff. Secondly, the same type of thing happens when I try to hold a feast, even when I have fish, meat, ale, and wine I get the message saying that many are suffering thirst and hunger. I would really appreciate it if someone would post the manual for this game, I've searched all over the internet, even translating pages from german, and nothing has really solved any of my problems.

Apsolute clasic. Nice one Abandonia :OK:

Ascaron pretty much started here. Patrician was one of the most compelling games I ever played and was proberly the single biggest reason for skipping classes in my early teens. Anyone into their stratagy games , Civ, Simcity or empire builders this is a MUST!!

By the way in terms of game play time this game took me literaly 100 hours+ to complete so get in some cofee and some match sticks for your eyes :)

some hints:

trade furs from Novgorod to Breuge and bring wine back , that should give you a strong trade route to get started.

Having money is good but power and influence is more important. Sell luxury goods to gain favour with rich

Provide food to starving towns and the people will love you

If you are alerted that pirates are lurking near a town arm up a ship with crew and weapons and set it up as a guard ship if you capture a pirate ship you not only gain favour but gain a ship

Buy ships from Novgorod the ship yard is slower to gain the bigger ships but is MUCH cheaper and often has most if not all of the materials except wood . load up with wood and get building.

Watch for when the next auction will be and save some cash. the ships are often is poor condition and are often over priced but even a "bad" purchase will make its own money back very soon.

any one downloading this game , please give it a little time and I promise if stratagy / empire building is your thing you will love it

Cheers Abandonia . . . . Lecher

Guest

If your having problems with building ships . you must sell the required materials into the town in order for the town to make use of them ,, so if the town is needing wood you can have 1000's of units of wood but the town will not build sell the wood to the town then build :)

Feasts.

Feasts a re a great way of keeping the people happy

in order to have a sucessfull feast you need

corn, meat , fish, ale and Wine

30 of each is enough if its a small feast but occasionaly people will come from all over the land . to ensure that any feat is a sucess.

Have stored in the town:

100 corn

100 fish

80 meat

150 ale

50 wine

P.S. if you really want to impress the people hold the feast between 25th dec to 31st dec.

P.S gaining favour with guilds will improve your standing a lot so try andjoin the ones on your regular trade routes

Wedings. Ok the sexy chick that looks like maroline munroe looks great but has as much wealth as a homless badger. Mary the rich merchants widow, play your cards right and there might be upto 5 ships for you for free. Try and mary a woman from hamburg , breuge or visby these towns seem to get the plauge more often and if your lucky (this will sound bad) she will die and you can mary another rich widow :Brain: he he he he he he he he. hope this helps with any probs :)

I played the game and i like it very much...but i still can't understand somethings.
What does this waggon do ?
What do the employers do ?
What happens if you buy a dried fish ?
How to rise the votes you won in ellections?
What is the difference between feast with and without bards?
How can i search for wrecked ships ?

Actually i don't understand much of the game  ;)

Leo

Finally! Solved my problem :D

Well it's Windows XP

Answers to Game Fan's questions:

The best way to rise votes is donating lots of money to the church and/or the poor. But you have to give some 100 thousands.... the other way is to bribe (in the bath) or to give a feast.
My questions:

What is the use of the guilds?
How does the convoi or the war fleet help?
How to get influence fast?
What is the game's goal, becoming Alderman?
I remember I became 1st council once.....

Very important advice by Lecher:

The pirates donate ships (hehehehehe), if you read: "Pirates attack Stettin" (for example) load the autosave and send a heavy armed ship with lots of crew to Stettin. Save and set "active defense", in most cases you will win the battle (otherwise reload) and gain incredible ships (55+ payload, or sloops with 300 men crew and many weapons, should not dismiss the crew or unload the weapons as this is only a bug!)

some answers at least:

What does this waggon do ?

it's an over-land-connection between Hamburg and Bremen (I think), by using it you ship your goods from the one city to the other without having to sail around Danmark

What do the employers do ?

they can brew beer from grain for example

What happens if you buy a dried fish ?

nothing, afaik

How to rise the votes you won in ellections?

do something for the church (donations for church extension) , the politicians (bribe) and the people (feasts, feed the poor)

What is the difference between feast with and without bards?

it may become more successful, but only if all other needs (beer, wine, fish, meat, grain) are satisfied

Great game, I F*cking hate it! I've played it an whole week now and I feel like it's almost impossible to succed. The game is wonderful, so i will continue playing it, but I have never hated a game so mutch as this!

In swedish it's calledl, "slump-generator", I don't know the exactly word for it in English, the games slumpgenerator really sucks! The random events thats accurs, always hit you when you least need it, as if the computer nows what tatics you have.

If you build warehouses, say a thousand so that you can earn money aswell saving up wares for feast and building of ships. It won't take many month before pirates steals everything! I have at least 3 Guardships around my city. With around 200 men aboard, 3 big catapults and 4 cannons on each... Still pirates boards them and destroys the city!

Every 3 year or so enemy armies attack and you looses all that you built. How the *meep* can you help your city from falling?! I tried hiring about 2000 men to work for me, still the city only had around 2000 fighters... It's hopeless.

If you by any chance build more then two ships in any none-hansa town, the town will take thoose ships and any other property of yours in town. Sometimes without a word in the calender. Ships just disepears on the sea, you save believing you finally began making breaktrough, and suddenly you see that half your fleet is gone... Not a word, not a single word!

I made an Excel document over sell/buy prices of the cities and understands that the only real income can be made by travelling between Brügge and Nowogorod. Still it seems like I have to ship more than that of income, like fish, meat and corn... You can't make an fortune on selling this, and even if you have a small fortune, it's never seems enough. I read here earlier and some one said, money ain't important. It is the people, church and the politics. I say, it's all about having as much ships as possible. Big ships that you send to the dock as often you can. Once you have an big fleet, you can begin spending money on whats mathers.

This game SUCKS, even thou you love it, you will hate it anyway!

Go play Ports of Calls instead or some game that will bring your life back... Have no time for chat, have to complete this damn game!!!

@Guest: "Does anybody know how to build a new ship ? I know there's a

..... "

Try pressing Enter to sign the contract (instead of clicking the mouse)

@Game fan: "What does this waggon do?"

An overland connection between Hamburg and Luebeck. There seems to be an unlimited amount of waggons available, you can transport 1000s of units, at no cost (i think). However the goods end up in your storehouse at the opposite side, so you have to sail there anyway to be able to sell the goods or do something other with them.

@Leo: "What is the game's goal, becoming Alderman?"

Partially. When you become Alderman, the game will ask if you want to finish or continue playing.

@mestor: "Has anyone here ever made it to Alderman? If so have you got
any tips to achieve that status?"

Not without cheating. I used a cheat that gives you billions of money (try google, i forgot the url). Nevertheless it took some hours of playing. To gain votes, you have to
* bribe councilmen (bathroom),
* give feasts,
* spend for both the church and the poor,
* simply trade much (the council of the town will honor you as the most important trader),
* enter into guilds,
* buy dry fish (?),
* buy indulgence (Ablass) (?).
I could not find out which activities are most important, nor how much money you have to spend and how often. I think that under real playing conditions it will be nearly impossible to "win" the game.

Has anyone managed to become Alderman without cheating?

Hi Everyone.

Yes, I did get Alderman, even in the second election (early 1359) and without cheating.

All you need are lots of ships (and being mayor of your home-town, what is a tough job).

At first, you should have a pirat near Stockholm (make sure to have at least 10.000 T in the office to be able buy the ships he offers). And don't be afraid to make debts in the early-game.
The route Brügge-Nowgorod is a good one, even better if you use the land-straight between Lübeck and Hamburg. But don't exagerate the "Luxury-Trading": you will soon ruin the whole economy by doing this.
Other very good routes are: London-Brugge, Visby-Stockholm, Visby-Danzig, Lubeck-Malmö. The gains aren't that exorbitant like those you get from fur trade, but: the time you need aren't either.

A very cheap way to get popular is to make sure, that your home city (I prefer Visby) has enough of all goods (especially Salt and Grain). Another way is to give credits to local artisans in your home town. It's not as effective as gifts to the people or church donations, but: you will get your money back.

Production is not the most effective way to make money, but in Rostock and Brugge it's quiet a good deal. Remember, that all the money you pay to your workers are rising your popularity.
Your workers will produce:
2 beer from one grain,
1 cloth out of 1 wool
1 crockery out of 2 wood, one iron and 2/3 leather.
2 fish out of 1 salt.
If you produce crockeries, you will also produce weapons.

You need at least 12 ships to get Alderman, in my first (and only) success I had about 26. Make sure to be "most important trader in some towns" and to join the town's guilds, where you trade a lot. WIthout guilt-gembership you wont receive any votes from a town. It's quiet a lot "micro-management" to do, but I do love this game anyway.

I almost ended up alderman at the first election yesterday with a great deal of cheating with ArtMoney. Unfortunally i only bribed the politicians and never gave any parties outside my hometown(i got 52 votes from the politicians but 0 from the population)

I have found the best tradingroute is to begin the game in Lubeck, buy salt, travel to Bergen or Tornsberg and sell it(50% profit), but fishoil and transport it to Bruegge and sell it(almost more than 100% profit), buy wine and transport to Novgorod and sell it(exellent profit), buy furs and go back to Lubeck.

When a spicefleet is reported, sail there and get as much as you can.

A thing i discovered when i once owned the original
When a city is under siege, buy arms in other cities and sail to the city under siege and get a big profit.

Fishoil is the burning oil they pour on attackers, right?

I have a question, i am the mayor and can supply an army. But i dont know what goods i should have to be able to muster companies.

Maybe most of you don't know it, but Patrician was the first game i've see capable to use the printer. You can go to the scribe and print a list with all you ships and comodities.... of course if you still using one of the old paralel ports printers, and his windows 3.1 configuration

Why is a game that is still being sold to the public even mentioned on a website that, as I understand it, only offers games for download that are no longer available for sale?

What usually happens, is that the game is added quite a while before it became available for sale on, say, gog.com. Abandonware used to be just that. There is a new trend to keep old games alive, though, and we support gog because they have the right to sell the games from the developers. Once a game is sold, it's no longer abandonware. We don't take the review down, however, but instead insert a buylink so its fans can find a working copy of the game that is also supported (and often patched or improved a little in terms of sound configuration) and runs well in DOSbox.

I hope that helps ;)

And sorry if we've been a bit snippy with you :)

And anyways, Abandonia is not just an abandonware site anymore. It's a site dedicated to old games, generally.

to save the game running under DOSBOX its necessary to create a folder "SPIELE.SAV" in the games folder

Is there a gog.com discussion thread?

I loved Patrician 2/3, but 4 just butchered it... it was like seeing lords of the realm 3 happen all over again, though not as drastic.

The first one definitely looks to be the game with the most atmosphere though.

Here's a tip for people who don't know how to get Elderman or increase quickly in the game.

Start out in Hamburg: there's 26 pepper there
loan untill you have 11000 thaler and buy them all.

If you want to 'cheat' the system, sell the 26 pepper, save and reload.
You can buy it again for 450 each.

If you want to play it 'honoustly' just wait 1 day, and hope theres still another 26 there.. buy, wait 1 day, sell, wait 1 day, buy/sell etc untill theres only 5/6 pepper left.. then just pay off your debt

For income later on you can set cities (allways put your home town to 10000 units of warehouses) to build 1000-5000 units of warehouse @39 each then buy up loads of wine in bremen and hamburg and start trading.
If bremen or hamburg has wine <450 value, loan tons and tons of money and buy up a stockpile of it.

You can also use another trick to earn millions of thaler but you'll cripple the town into poverty-stricken for some time :sneaky:.

Buy up all the arms from the blacksmith, then move ALL of it to another city and just leave 31 arms in your ship. Sell it back to the blacksmith via the Inn, you'll get a super high price for it (1000-1200 thaler). Then buy the 31 back from the blacksmith (on the pricelist it says 1300+ but when you actually buy it, it only costs 600-800 thaler).

Using this you can earn infinite amount of money, you can also donate tons to the church for quick support in the town (mayor/elderman status)

YES! I've been looking for ages for a solution and this works
create the file SPIELE.SAV on the game directory.

enjoy

To fix hang in scribe's office you need to have "virtual printer", so write in Dosbox.conf or .bat file before starting the game:
[parallel]
parallel1=file

There could be a number of problems. However dosbox configuration file is worth a look! It is located in the programs folder under DOSBox. Just look for DOSBox option .bat file or similar. Once you double click on that you can see what you can change. Once you have chaged the values to your liking just make sure you save it thank you God of Heaven if you can get your problems fixed#:OK:
