What is the best RPG (console style) of all time i'm a big fan of the Final Fantasy and Breath of Fire Series so personally mine is Final Fantasy VII the graphics maybe outdated but the freedom it gives you is great! What abt Breath of Fire III with its cartoony gaphics and dragon transforming or even Grandia or Star Ocean?
I haven't played many of those games and I wouldn't call them RPG's (well, I guess it's okay, since you added the "console style" at the end :)), but the best of those I've played is probably Suikoden. I enjoyed it a lot.

Final Fantasy VII is considered the best RPG because for many video gamers it was the one game that got them into RPGs in the first place. There was nothing really special about Final Fantasy VII aside from the backgrounds and the FMVs.

Final Fantasy VII had a brilliant storyline the materia system is still the best around. Ok! it was alot different had olld style 2d but if the same game was in 2d (which my m8 tryed to do LOL gave up within the fiirst 2 days) it would still be amazing. Crono Cross and BOF are brilliant 2d games

I would have to say probably Final Fantasy 6 was one of the best of all time, it had many great elements to it, lots of characters, a cool story, a bad-a** villian, really great stuff.
I would for sure put FF 7 right afterwards though it's a worthy game.

I never got around to finishing ff6 but i found it got boring compared to ff7/8/10 (9 sucked it was too easy and childish)

An insane man working in the shadows of a major corporation/kingdom (usually evil itself), often manipulating that corporation/kingdom, while opposing a group of fighters looking for peace and freedom has not been an uncommon theme in RPGs, even before Final Fantasy VII.
The only thing Final Fantasy VII brought to the RPG genre was FMVs. There was nothing special about the Materia system (aside from how unique it was in itself) because many RPGs that came before Final Fantasy VII had their own special system of advancement anyway. In fact, there was nothing special about Final Fantasy VII.
Whether a game is 2D or 3D shouldn't make any difference. There were many really good 2D games, and very few good 3D games. Games do not have to be in 3D to be good. If a game's graphics are stupendous, you have to stop and wonder how much time they could have devoted to the gameplay instead of making the graphics look almost realistic.

I haven't played many of them, because I don't like manga  but for me it is Chrono Trigger, I was glued to my chair while playing it :) I havn't played FFVII yet, but almost every one is praising it, so I think I'll give it a try.

FFVI is great, I loved it.
But (PC only) my vote for best RPG goes to either Morrowind or Baldur's Gate II.
Morrowind for it's expanse, freedom and replayability.
Baldur's Gate II for it's incredible and emmersive storyline, great screens, interesting chars, nice and plentifull sidequests and wonderfull atmosphere.
The best of the best! Nothing beats a good, well made RPG :Brain: !
Console style RPG hardly pass as RPG imo, but I would say Final Fantasy 7
The best REAL RPG I've played is Fallout 2. Second place for Torment. Those were great.
*edit*
This just reminded me of how wonderful the Fallout games were. I need to replay em as soon as I finish my last exam.

Well, you should really play Daggerfall at least once in your life because it's one of the greatest rpgs of all times. IMHO it's thousand times much better than morrowind because it's bigger, better, it has a less-linear plot, thousands (and i mean thousands) of quests, hundreds of dungeons and the best freedom ever.

Daggerfall, DAGGERFALL and once more DAGGERFALL!!!
It is superior to most other rpg it almost any way( unfotunetly it is also RPG that hold record for most bugd.... )
Myself I quite like that few FF games I played, but they are nowhere near my top RPGs....(These places are occupied by Daggerfall,Morrowind,Baldurs Gate,Fallout, and even NWN to some(small) degree...)
My opinion :ok:
I gotta vote no on the Daggerfall. I didn't like the 3D map, and I just couldn't get past that. A crappy map in conjunction with huge dungeons = me spending hours trying to find the exit.

I am still a newbie in RPG genre, so can anybody recommend any other console-style (I refer to the style, not the platform) RPG games for PC beside Dragon Knight 3 Knight of Xentar, Cobra Mission, and Mad Paradox (much better if the recommended game is just an RPG, not a hentai RPG)?

I have BoF 4 and Grandia 2 on PC. But since they are originally console games they count. And personally I think Grandia 2 was fantastic, loved every second of it.
I don't play many console RPG's as they are all unavailable to me except for ones that are available on PC, but I borrowed Suikoden 2 off a friend and am playing it on an emulator, haven't gotten very far I don't where to go, I just got rescued by Jowy from the mercenary's and I'm meant to be going to Kyara but the mountain pass is blocked.

Heh Suikoden 2 is the first Japanase RPG that I played on my PC, using an emulator, I thought it was great, but after that I played FFVII, VIII and others, and they were all - alike, unoriginal...
@Iron: I think you have to go to the mercenary fortress or something, I really am not sure though...

I figured it out, I had to go to Ryube first to meet the travelling entertainers to help me get pass the guards to go over the mountain.
Well anyway now I'm back at the mercenary fort and I'm running around helping people and making them join my party. Its interesting I got a wolf.

If I had to choose one, it would be among these five titles:
Ultima VII: The Black Gate
King of Dragon Pass
Betrayal at Krondor
Baldur's Gate II
Planescape: Torment
Ultima VII has a scope that I think nobody has yet approached. King of Dragon Pass is a remarkable RPG/strategy hybrid with unusual depth. Betrayal at Krondor was the first 3D RPG, the first with chapters, the first to advance and develop new mini-plots as you moved through time. BG2 had wonderfully alive party NPCs with their own dialog and motivations, and PS:T had the finest writing, bar none, as well as in-depth characterization.
Vinin

Personally I think the original baldur's gate was so much better than BG2. Near the end of BG2, you did become really really strong wheras in BG1, it was more realistic for me. A wolf could kill my lvl 7 mage which I would imagine could happen if I was a mage too.
Besides, the best characters of BG2 had their premier here especially Minsc and Boo.
Otherwise, FFVI absolutely blows FFVII out of the water. If you disagree, it is because you never played VI. Once you do, you will see that VII was not nearly as good. It is in my opinion of slightly lower grade than FFV. Play them and you will see. They actually sell them in chronology packs. I got the V/VI pack for my ps1 and that was at least 4 monthes of my life gone.
Also, if you played Tales of Symphonia and thought that was amazing and the battle system innovative, it isn't. It uses basically the same one as it's predecessor. Play it, it is an amazing game with an amazing storyline
In any case console wise:
1. Final Fantasy 6
2. Final Fantasy 5
3. Tales of Phantasia
4. Breath of Fire II
5. Final Fantasy 7
PC-wise:
1. Fallout 2
2. Baldur's Gate
3. Ultima VII: The Black Gate/Serpent Isle
4. Knights of the Old Republic
5. Baldur's Gate II

Yea for the consoles I have to say FF7.
Now, thats not saying FF7 was the best, many people have their opinions, usually it depends on your age. Young players like the newer FF10 like titles, while older players remember games that actually had substance, not pretty pictures.
But I have to say FF7 was the best in many areas. It was one of the first console games that got people into rpgs, one of the best for the ps1. It was also a huge breakthrough in many areas of gameplaying that have carried over to newer games. A huge jump from FF6. Tons of mini games, 3d graphics, movie sequences, and many more things.
Now, in my eyes, there are a few games that were very good for the console that I liked alot, almost as good as FF7. Xenogears was one that was close, if not on the same level as FF7. Other nice ones were final fantasy tactics. Many people liked the other FF, 5-10. Games like Chrono trigger/cross, breath of fire, star ocean, arc the lad, dark cloud 1/2, and others are also very fun.
Now for the pc, man, have been a bunch. Might and magic, Wizardry, Ultima, etc. I think many old players have played many of them, and alot of them are super cool and fun. Personally I think the Baldur's gate series was a huge breakthrough on the PC, rpgs were kinda stagnant before that, kinda fizzling since the early days of the above named games. Baldur's gate brought rpgs on the PC into the current decade. With fun storylines, characters, fun gameplay.
I have to vote Baldur's gate 1/2 as top on the PC, many others were fun as heck to play over the decades, but I think I played BG1 and 2 for months, really enjoying them. Yea, BG2 kinda turned into a hack fest with its expansion, but still was very fun and good.

Final fantasy 7 was the first RPG i ever played and i thought it was brilliant. As it was my first RPG i was abit dissapointed with the ending...mainly because it just ended.
Grandia 2 was a very good game as well, in par with grandia 1 in my mind.
My other favourites are wild arms 2 and 3, breath of fire 3 and the suikoden series(can be annoying though to have to start again just to get the 100 odd stars).
Ive recently started to get bored with the new RPG's that have came out, they just cant seem to keep my attention. Maybe i'm just getting bored of RPG's in general which is shame because i used to enjoy the good gameplay and plot that came with these kinda games.

Star Ocean: The Second Story is the best console-style RPG ever.
It is followed by the Lunar series, then FFVI, FFIX and FFX.
FFVII is somewhere around the middle. And FFVIII is the worst RPG ever made. Unless you count Diablo.
