The Slicks'n'slide Championship Tournament

It's the time for the first Slicks'n'Slide championship tournament of Abandonia!

Slicks'n'Slide is a classic shareware title by Timo Kauppinen. The amazing playability, the easy, simple to learn controls, and the fun gameplay made it the best of its kind back in the mid-'90s, and it's still one of the most entertaining racing games ever. And best of all, the registered version comes with a track editor, which guarantees an endless supply of new tracks (as all tracks work with the unregistered one, too). That's also the reason why it is ideal for having a competition.

The champion will get to choose his/her prize from several options, all listed at the competition website at http://slicks05.hopto.org (or http://koti.mbnet.fi/herd/slicks05).

Here's how it goes (it's all very simple):

1.) Download Slicks'n'Slide (version 1.30D) for example from here (http://koti.mbnet.fi/herd/slicks05/slix130d.zip) and read through the competition rules (http://koti.mbnet.fi/herd/slicks05/rules3.html). There you will find all the things explained in this post, and a bunch of helpful hints.

2.) Go to the download page (http://koti.mbnet.fi/herd/slicks05/dl3.html) and download the current track file to your Slicks directory.

3.) Run Slicks and try to drive through the track as fast as possible. You can try as many times as you wish.

4.) When you're satisfied with your time, e-mail the same track file to me (timo@diplomats.com) - and please remember to include your forum name.

5.) Download the next track when it comes available.


- There will be 6 tracks altogether. I make them by myself, so they are completely new for everyone.

- A new track will be available at the competition website (http://slicks05.hopto.org) every Tuesday at 11pm EET (9pm GMT). You must send your results by that deadline, or they won't be accepted.

- If after sending the file, but before the deadline, you get a better lap, you are allowed to send it and it will be applicable to the competition.

- The player with the fastest lap gets 10 points, the 2nd gets 6pts, the 3rd gets 4pts, the 4th gets 3pts, the 5th gets 2pts and the 6th gets one point.

- Missing a track doesn't matter. You can play as few as you want, or you can play them all.

The competition deadlines:

Track 1 - available now, return by Tuesday the 24th of May.
Track 2 - available on the 24th of May, return by Tuesday the 31st of May.
Track 3 - available on the 31st of May, return by Tuesday the 7th of June.
Track 4 - available on the 7th of June, return by Tuesday the 14th of June.
Track 5 - available on the 14th of June, return by Tuesday the 21st of June.
Track 6 - available on the 21st of June, return by Tuesday the 28th of June.

(The deadline is at 9pm GMT on each day above).

Ok, with still a few days to go to the deadline of the first track, the first submissions have started rolling in. Some good times, some not-so-good ones in there.

I've been thinking of posting some standings on how people have done so far (just the current ranking, without the actual times) so that everyone would know if they should try a bit harder (as the rules say, you can make as many submissions as you want). What do you think?

Another thing - how many of you are planning to take part? Is anyone having problems running the game?

I just downloaded the game , will try it our now, it looks very familiar, and yes, please post the results so I know how I'm standing...

EDIT: I see there are many wehicles, are they sorted by speed, because I seem to have the best time with that formula like that's last when you select them...

Also where can I see this tire and engine level?

Ok, some instructions for the ones who have never played the game before:

1. The Formula 1 car is the fastest (officially called IndyCar) on asphalt.
2. From options set the money level as high as you can, tuning on, and the rest off.
3. When tuning is set on, you can set the engine, tire and other levels before the race.

Oh. And do NOT set the engine and tire levels higher than 4. If you set them any higher, the game won't record your laps.

I'll put the standings up once there have been enough submissions - right now there have been 4, including myself.

From what I've seen you can only tune your car if the Computer is turned on, not that you can race with them on the custom track...
Also it is impossible to set 4-4-4(engine, tire, steering), right?
An optimum for me is either 4-2-0 or 4-0-3...
Also since I've add tuning my best time has improved for a second...

Only steering and tires have the maximum of 4, the rest can be anything you want. So even 4-4-20 would be acceptable.

Oh, quite possible. I usually use 4-4-4 myself. The steering isn't that important, anyway.

That's odd. When I set money to maximum I can afford 4-4-18. Oh, and it did help a little bit, although not as much as I'd hoped.

With less than 48 hours to go, only 4 submissions (inclusing myself) have come in. Disappointing, really - either the marketing has failed, or people don't care about the prizes.

Exams and such over here as well. The best thing about the competition is that it takes about 5-10 minutes to take part - and surely everyone can manage to find that much free time over a whole week?

Kosta's an exception to the 5-10 minute thing. He has sent 3 submissions in already. ;)

How can you "tune" your cars? I turned the option on but when I select "Go!" it goes directly to the race without options...

I remember playing this game when I was about 12-14. A very nice game tough it seems like this version is way higher than the one I used to play. :ok:

Not enough submissions yet. Only 2-3 have come in so far, and that's including myself. I think 5 is a good limit - once there are 5 people with their times in, I will post the standings.

EDIT: Huge difference between the first and the last, but still some very close cases (like between me and Eagle there was only 0,01 seconds!). Interesting. The choice of the vehicle was important here, as it probably will be in the track 3 as well.

It's still impossible to guess who will win the whole thing, the differences in points are not very big.

Darn it i can't find the best vehicle for this...

I don't get it, when I have a feeling that the vehicle is driving fast through the water, it always proves otherwise with time, I really don't get it how can you make so much better times :ranting:

Ok, the results and the new track are up on the site. Very, very small differences this time, and with a great variety of vehicles. Me and Eagle have a small lead before the others, but since the competition is just halfway, anything can still happen.

And Tulac, the key was to go around the water. Almost all cars go faster on grass than in water. ;)

As it is a bit unfair that I know the times of everyone and could have used that to my benefit, I will from now on post my current best time along with the current standings. Worry not, you'll figure it out sooner or later. :)

And people, keep in mind that even though your time is slower (or so ridiculously faster that you'll feel the competition is too easy to bother with) than mine, it doesn't mean that you shouldn't send your time in. There are still plenty of points to grab.

My current best: 08.98. I think it can stay at that for now.

Oh, didn't realize it was actually a question. Well, no, as the deadline is there for a reason. Sorry. It'd be too easy for the people to start cheating by first checking the best times of the round, then turning the computer clock a couple days back and race until the time is good enough. I'm sure you see the reason there.

And Eagle, the deadline has been the same for the past 4 weeks and it's explained in the first post of this thread and the website of the competition. ;)

Anyhow, now that it is sure that I can't reach you back in points I see no point in participating in the future races. I'd be surprised if somebody manage to get to the second rank and beat me.

A win is 10 points but for that you need to beat Timpsi. Which drops the point to 6 for a second place.

There are prices at stake, so yeah... competition is still going, and people should use the time to get better at their driving. ;)

The last I heard from Timpsi was that he was going to create a couple of extra tracks (in addition to the planned number) to make up for the time this topic has been neglected.

The reason this competition has faded is that a lot of issues appeared in Timpsi's life, so he needs to adjust (plus he had a server breakdown).

This (or next) week I should *finally* get myself a proper access, and the competition will continue. There's one original track left, and in order to make it more fair, 2 new ones will be added.
