ah one of my favorite games.
Never finished a level though as I never got how to get the airplane to pick you up if you are finished.

One of the first games that I actually bought for my Atari ST back in the days.
I still have the box, the disks, manual etc as I do for some other ST games.
The game is like Ghost Recon, only in kinda isometric 2D. You get missions and you get to choose your equipment. You also choose 1 or 2 extra bags that are dropped somewhere along the map to resupply yourself, if you can reach them that is. You choose more or less where to be airdropped and pray that the wind doesn't take you far away. After that you slowly move upward and finish yoru mission.
The animation is not the best, but it is not bad considering when the game was made. The ST graphics were better, but, nothing spectacular even for that.
The game was a great fun to play and it was till the days of modern FPS tactical shooters, the best tactical shooter on any computer IMO.
This is not a shoot everything in sight game, you will be slaughtered if you take this like any other shoot 'em 'up game. It required patience, thinking, and luck.
One of my favourite actions was to sneak inside a ditch and slowly crawl my way behind an enemy soldier and (to be quiet) use my knife to "get rid of him". Excellence in gaming!

Hmm, I need to register one day soon.

Guys, finding this version of Airborne Ranger was a huge happy moment! I'm ex-Army and we played this in both the Commodore and PC version for thousands of hours in our barracks in Germany.
I just found Ancient Art of War on the site, it just keeps getting better.
Thanks,
Sgt Brunson

I loved this game on my commodore 64/128.
Of course, this runs waaaay too fast to play. Anyone know of a way to slow it down?

DOSBOX or sourceforge.net and search for emulators for commodore 64 or atari that should run the game at normal speed.

F9 = Map
F10 = Run/Walk

5 = Set timebomb to 5 second delay
6 = Set timebomb to 10 second delay
7 = Set timebomb to 15 second delay
Spacebar = Crawl/Walk
Enter = Use weapon
Backspace = Use medkit

I just love this game/sim. I have never gotten tired of playing it. I wish they had made more missions or a current company would redo it just like it was only with better graphics. I just hate the army "team" games. Why do we need a "team". Hard to keep track of. Airborne Ranger was ONE Ranger and easy to play and enjoy. :kosta:

I can get the game to run at a normal speed, a balance between painfully slow and being overrun by a hoard of grey men in nanoseconds, which for me in dosbox turns out to be around 333 cycles, but now the problem is that the mission timer is not linked to the actual speed of the gameplay. When i get the speed i want for the game, i always run out of time before i even get halfway up the map, which leads me to believe that the program calls for an absolute value rather than cpu cycles to determine the rate at which the timer counts down...i used to love this game on my tandy 1000, but even with emulation, there are some parts that are not the same. frustration! :angry:

i never had the patience to sneak in airborne ranger.
I can't remember - did you need to remain undetected at one point?
that said, i never did finish many scenarios when I played it 15 years ago..

Trips me out that I was only 6 years old when this was released. I remember playing it, loving it, and getting super frustrated at one mission in particular, which I could not seem to beat. Granted, I was pretty damn young, so cut a girl some slack. Always near and dear to my heart - a favorite.
MicroProse, I grew with them.

All I can say is, play it on C64 with an emulator, like WinVice. It will run at the right speed and looks and plays 'right'! This, after all, was one of the many games that were written for C64 and then 'ported'! Try the original, it's better in my opinion. Although the fact I have an original boxed version along with my original C64 still, I may be biased! :)

I had a lot of fun with this game when I was a kid. I downloaded and I had to realize that I'm not that patient anymore.:laugh:

I got a mac if that helps but the only controls that work are arrow keys and space. All the F1s don't work.

You can map the original keys into whatever ones you prefer. Open the mapper, I don't know how in DOSBox for Mac, but you can look it up in the readme that comes with DOSBox.

Yes! An awesome game. Another title that I played for years on my C64. It still looks better on my C64 than the DOS version.
