I would like to see you get Pool of Radiance here and try to work it under windows. When I got the game from .the underdogs site it didn't work. I asked me for disk 3.

I actually have the game, but it is original, so it won't help you much.
That's because I lost the copyprotection wheel and would have to copy the Journal....nearly all old D&D games i know of use the journal, where you get things like:
"And the guard says (Journal entry #45)"

Doh. I don't know if it's so cool switching back and forth to desktop to read.....

Always found this particular CP rather annoying.

Try to run it with dosbox. It works for me and never ask for disks.

P.S. Try to run it from a folder in c: (ex. C:\POOL) because you have more chance to get it work

when the game asks a code you need to type SIRJOE and when i played the game controls we're a little weird... and the game must be copied to C: drive

Dreg'atar

this doesn't seem to work even when you put it to C: hmm........

But as I understand it the game still won't be uploaded unless somebody actually owns it...

I own it. I actually own all of the gold box series of games. :)

The only thing that would be a pain would be the copy protections as they used a code wheel thing. A work-around though would be to keep loading the game and to write up a list of all the Q's that are asked and their answers.

I agree. The goldbox games are major classics, they should be on here.

Yuerrk. That would be a terror of doing it. I own a booklet with five discs,
including: Pools of Radiance to Menzoberazzan plus Hillsfar...

And I KNOW that I once owned a little Dos-Prog which removed all those annoying "Enter Journal Entry XX Line X Word X" and codewheel-thingies for LOTS of old games...

but I am pretty sure that THIS wouldn't be legal.....What was it called??

Could it have been an early (!) version of dirty little helper???? Dunno. Probly not.
But I'm pretty sure the name sounded much alike...

Anyway, I lost nearly all codewheels due to numerous house-movings and now I cannot play the series anymore...ACK!

There were, and are, a number of those programs. The only one I remember from back in the day, is Rawcopy. I've already suggested hosting it on abandonia, but I don't think there's an interest.

sorry to extinguish any hopes about Pools of Radiance being uploaded on
abandonia, but since this game's ESA protected, there won't be a chance
of offering it here...

Oh yeah, I forgot that Ubi Soft bought SSI. Too bad really, they've made a lot of good games.

Ubisoft bought SSI? now thats news to me, i thought SSI just died..
oh well, i got most of them now, so im busy reliving my childhood in New Phlan :Titan: :D

btw, codewheel and manuals can be found on replacementdocs.com

Actually they were bought by Mindscape in 1994, and have changed hands a number of times since then. But of course SSI doesn't really exist anymore, only the brand.

Doc Adrian
25-05-2005, 09:56 PM
The sad thing is I got all my old commodore games and their original docs

but the commodore died a long time ago

otherwise I would still occasionally fire it up LOL

Damn that sucks. All of these gold box games that can't be bought anymore are just forgotten. And they were the best D&D games ever made as well. I even own both buck rogers games too, (technically not gold box, but still great). 2nd ED D&D is so much better than 3rd IMO, (for computers, for Pen 'n paper I see 3rd being good though).

And is it only pool of radiance, or all gold box games? The Krynn series was damn good too.

It's all the gold box games, plus every other game that SSI has published (unless they've sold the rights to someone else).

That's such a shame. I've got all originals of pretty much every SSI D&D game ever made that would have made excellent additions to the RPG secton of this site. Ah well... The real shame is newer generations missing out.

Was the cracking program called "Neverlock"?
And does anybody know of any reasonably good goldbox-clones? I'm thirsting for some Poolrad but am having a heck of a time getting it to run (Athlon/XP). sigh... ditto on Darklands... crud.

I don't know if Neverlock works with Pool of Radiance, but it shouldn't be hard to find one that will.

As to making the Gold Box games and Darklands run in XP...have you tried DOSBox and/or VMDSound? They're both available from this site, and should make both games run without problems. At least I had no problems running them.

Pool of Radience (got it from Underdogs) and other similar games works on Dosbox, quite perfectly too.
