IMPORTANT NOTICE: Run game using file Prince.bat, so that you can enable cheats (if you want cheat).

These are the cheats:
K - kills your nearest enemy
Shift + L - Skip level
Shift + T - You emediatly gain one heart
Shift + W - Enables you to fly
+ - Increases time left
- - Decreases time left
I guess that's all.

ohhhhh really u need to cheat in this game........i've never met a person who finished the game without cheating........time is so limited and it is so difficult

TheVoid

Well, I never cheated, in this wonderful game. but maybe it's because I have years of training behind and know the levels by memory...god knows how many times I played it. Huh, Unknown Hero, when the ghost jumps in front of you, u must IMMEDIATLY put away your sword and RUN through the ghost ( he actually is your image, so when you put away the sword, he'll also do it ).

My actual record should be around 30 minutes...without cheating.

Hope H.Hero will find this tip helpful :)

I have just passed the game. My new record is 34 minutes!!!

If you want to cheat you need to do the following: If you enter the game from DOS then you need to write princemegahit (I don't remember if it's one or two words), instead of prince.

It's 'prince megahit' so with a space. Actually this is one of the first really well-known trainers.

I like especially the hard swordfights, with all that nice sword-dancing in the air, and pressing like mad UP+INS....

My top five PoP enemies:

1-The Fat Guy on level 6 (let's face it! It's WAY stronger and cooler than jaffar himself)
2- Olde Viziere Jaffar
3- The defensive guard starting level 8
4- The skeleton in level 3
5- The guard near the door button in level 8, the one you have to approach cautiously (it's not actually hard to beat, but try to kill him just above the button!)

My personal record is exactly 28 minutes (ending first level at 59th minute)

Decalies

Wasn't the tactics something like block and immediately attack. Wait again for an attack, block it and immediately attack. As soon as you start to attack first it went horribly wrong...

TheVoid
23-08-2004, 10:07 AM
Yep, in fact block is up arrow.

The wickest thing to do is actually swap position with guards and make them fall into pits & spikes or be divided by that scary slicers

Unknown Hero
23-08-2004, 10:39 AM
I used to fight Viziere Jaffar and after I beat him, I killed myself so I could restart level and fight Jaffar again.

TheVoid
23-08-2004, 10:46 AM
Yep, I used too....it seems to me that he sometimes sucks, and sometimes is very hard-however I prefer to kill the Fat Guy, even if he hasn't that cool atmosphere music (tarataranda-ta ta ta, tarandandand ta, taranta ti)

One question: does anybody knows the level 7 trick?

Unknown Hero
23-08-2004, 10:48 AM
You mean with flying potion?

vipin
23-08-2004, 05:04 PM
I have completed this game entirely on my own. If you guys need any kind of help, cheat codes, tips and tricks of any stage, then just tell me.

TheVoid
23-08-2004, 05:59 PM
No. The level 7 trick must actually be a bug, but it spares you A LOT of time...

After you start the level, go all way right, kill the guard (possibly makin the slicer do the work   ), avoid to crash the floor tile that closes the door below, and go up, then pass the next slicer and kill the orange guard. then go to next screen, there's little space and a minor potion.
Make the prince jump against the wall, and DON'T get any closer to the wall by tapping right. turn left, run and make a running jump as soon as possible.

You will fall to the screen below and magically pass through the grating.
You,ll lose a life, but spare much time.

TheVoid

A useful tip for sword fights is to parry when the opponent swings and fast reply with a hit....this will mow down most guards in few time.
To parry, use UP arrow, then SHIFt very fast to combo it.

Kon-Tiki
21-10-2004, 04:34 PM
It's almost a reflex when playing a game, that trick. Only hard enemies're the skeleton in lvl. 3 and some guards later on that wait until you attack. Heck, even Jafar's pretty easy.

Run the game with "prince megahit" and hit shift+L. In the version 1.3 the code is "prince improved".

Now this is what you call a game. No gimmicks, no special keys just you, a shift button, a couple of arrows and a clock. YA HOOOOOO!!

I remember this game for years and years ago. My dad had a lap top (it was actually the size of your lap too....good old 1990's technology). Anyhoo the screen was crystals and the colour was crap but that didn't bother you. As long as you could see the little dude who cared.

My best time is 13 minutes to spare...and (big yay for me!!) NO CHEATS necessary. :Brain:

Number two is causing me a little trouble, but I will get over it and persist with my pursuit in saving the love of my life.

Prince of Persia 1 is one of those simple games that if you do have that hour to spare, it is real nice time filler.

Good luck and have fun.

Well, for that level 12 thing i wanted to say something that is very special for me... Because this game is one of the first games i've ever played in my life, you people reminded me a very emotional moment of mine... That was when i was trying hard to get to the next level of 12, you guessed it, with my spirit, swords up and i was going mad. I tried almost everything, but the idea of putting my sword down was only a suicidal thing for me as i gived it up for finding a way to get to the next level. Then a magical thing happened... :bye:

You can pass first level with these two options (choose first one!):
1. Go left (as long as you can) and there you will collect sword. Now you are ready to fight first guard! :ok:
2. Once you meet that guard (you're still without sword), wait him at the edge of the screen (turn him back), and when he comes close enough run left to next screen and he will follow you (if he don't follow you, then you must go back and wait until he comes closer). Again go to the left edge of the screen and wait for guard. After he comes close enough, you jump and climb on brick and the guard wont catch you anymore. Go to another screen and there will be way up (you need to throw down one of the bricks of the ceiling. Blah,blah,blah.....on that way, you will bypass the guard and reach the exit. On level two you will have sword, just like if you collected it! :ok:
Ufffff - that was a looong explanation!

What are u saying!!! I remember i did the game in 25 minutes and we all my friends were still playing trying to reduce that time

there is no savegame in Pronce of Persia, that's part of what it makes it great, it's a maximum one hour play, why do you want to save?

dr_st
04-02-2005, 04:31 PM
Erm, I think that the exact method to save and load games were described earlier in this thread...

The graphics for the SNES version did look a bit cheesy, but they were mostly better than the dull graphics of the PC version. And the game itself was also longer, with more levels and cool devices. Probably the best conversion of the original PoP.

Then again, nothing beats Prince of Persia 2 for the PC...

Need help! How do you do a small step? I thought it was shift and walk, but it doesn't seem to work... Shift does let me hang on to a ledge though. What's the key I'm missing?

(I'm using the latest version of DOSBox in case it matters)

Thanks!

You've got it right. Stop moving, hold in Shift (maybe it has to be Left Shift, I dunno) and then press Left or Right.

A little step has to be done by bending down and pressing left or right.
You COULD do that, but I advise against it...
Better do what Tuttle said (using shift + arrows): if you're close to a ledge, pressing down will simply cause prince to jump down, which is erhm rather unsafe. Using shift + arrow keys will make him walk up to the very end of the ledge. It's also faster, which can be important when you need to be in time before a gate closes.

griphiam
22-02-2005, 03:13 AM
Well that's frusterating... cause shift + walk doesn't do a small step for me. I've tried every combination. Oh so disapointing. I was so looking forward to playing it again (I played it on an old Mac back in the day)

Thanks though.

You should press shift, and hold it pressed. Then press left or right (while shift is still being pressed) and then release both keys.

Go all the way up, then to the far right. There was a tile there that opens that particular gate. However, since the route between that tile and the gate consists of constant jumping, I was always too slow to get there in time.
Or is there simply another way? Anyone else?

From the beginning:

-Go one screen left, climb all the way up to the right.
-Once on the top, Jump to the right screen. Jump to the button tile, quickly turn, little step to the edge of the button tile, jump 2 times, run&jump to the previous screen.
-NEVER stop, keep running to the left.
-there's a pit, run&jump over it (you're already running, otherwise you don't listen to what I say).
-Run all the way left and jump from the last, loose tile. Hold shift and hang, get up as quickly as possible and ta-dah you're past it.

Here's how it should really be done.

For earlier versions of Prince of Persia (1.0):
PRINCE MEGAHIT

For later versions (1.3,1.4):
PRINCE IMPROVED

For 4D Prince of Persia:
PRINCE KIRILL!

You can type it from the command-line, or you can create a .BAT file or you can create a shortcut and in the shortcut properties add the cheat code as a command-line parameter.

Prince of Persia has to be one of my favorite PC games of all time.. I finished the 1st and 2nd on PC although there was so many different versions of the game check this out

http://www.classicgaming.com/reviews/princ...nceofpersia.htm (http://www.classicgaming.com/reviews/princeofpersia/princeofpersia.htm)

you can download the Supernintendo version (and the SNES emulator here)

also the Genisis Version
http://www.freeroms.com/genesis.htm

Trying to find the Macintosh versions of both 1 & 2 cuz it was apparently they were the best versions...dunno if they would work on IBM though

My favorite trap was probably in the 2nd one in the ruined city where that blade comes out of the slit in the wall and chops you in two.. that was nasty, those flying witches heads were really freaky too, u had to time the hit and u only had that crappy dagger/broken sword

Greatest game ever, but how did you finish it in 30 min?! It would take that much just to run through the levels without fighting! (at least I remember it that way). On my old 286 time didn't expire at all, dunno why. It would always tell 60 minutes left.

When the mirror has appeared, you have to run towards it, then jump through. You will lose all your lives except one, allowing you to reach the door to the next level -if you've opened it first, which can be done by proceeding to the right, climb down 1 level, then go left, pass the metal teeth, walk onto the "switch/stone".

You'll see your shadow run off in the opposite direction. You will meet it again in a further level.

This was one of the very first games I played in the recent timies
after my very first initiation years ago on Atari game system,
with Flight Simulator, wow was that a long time ago....
Anyway, POP is such a great classic, solid feel, consistent
graphics, and very nice visuals with the scenes that are present
with the various levels. Yes, the mirror image is a fun one,
and one of the special visuals in this first of the game series.

I still love exploring the levels, and testing my skills. What a
great range of ideas melcher (sp?) had in creating this, and
the way one can control the Prince and his actions makes this
a first person adventure even though it is a side view.

Great game. Great series. :ok:

You actually have to find the sword in the first stage of POP 1,
once you find it you will be carying it with you as you move, and
you (as the prince) will draw it automatically as you approach enemies, guards of various kinds and Jaffar. You can put it away by using the down key,

Here are the directions for using the sword in Prince 1, they are different for
Prince II for in that version you can actually draw the sword for yourself.

during the sword fights, the normal way you make moves becomes different:

UP key.......... Prince blocks an attack. When you do this, it will stop your
opponent's sword and also push you back a bit, so watch out when you are
in front of a ledge, you can be pushed off.

DOWN button........ Prince puts his sword back in his scabbard, and while doing so,
play will change and it reverts back to Normal mode. In this condition, undefended, if you get hit by a guard you are DEAD, only do this if you can run away safely.

LEFT button........ You go one step to the left holding the sword

RIGHT button....... You go to the right ditto

SHIFT button....... You hit out with his sword. Use this to attack a guard. and it
will mean you can stab and hit an opponent. Look at the life bottles at the bottom,
the ones on the left are yours, when they all go out, you are DEAD. the enemies
you meet will have their own life potions at the bottom right, as each one gets
extinguished, they get weaker, and when they are all gone, they die and fall down.
you must learn to use the fighting keys alternatively as they attack or as you attack, you will just need to practice and learn about this. It does get easier. Remember the guard will just stand and block as long as you attack, they will then attack you and move towards you when you dont attack them.
You can switch places with a guard during a swordfight by moving to the left or right. When you move past a guard, you as the prince turn to the opposite side to face the guard.

Good luck it is a great game. :ok:

Pressing shift will cause Prince to take out his sword if there's an enemy in sight. Also use shift to wield the sword, plus arrow up and down for other movements (certain ways of blocking) with it. [/b][/quote]
I wouldn't agree with this.

IF YOU HAVE a sword, you can take it out if you simply stop running. (there must be an oppoment near)
To collect a sword, in first level, you should go to the left, as far as possible, and there you will see it laying on the ground, and shining..... :w00t:

Yes in POP 2 the sword can be used at the player's volition,
in POP 1 only when there is an enemy near. It is still lots of
fun and takes practice especially when you get to the blue
guards who are very quick and watch you like a hawk. You
will meet them later on in the game, for now at the beginning,
get used to the moves and enjoy the journey! The Princess
awaits!

Killing the FAT guy in level 6 is very easy but challenging. See this:-
You have to use Shift Key for Fighting with the sword. Now go near the FAT guy, he will come and try to kill you. But at this time when he tries to hit you with the sword use the UP arrow key. Keep doing this continuously as he is very smart to fight non-stop. I hope this should help you.
Its sad that this game is now under ESA protection. This game happens to be one of my all time favourite!

you can also move PAST guards when you are fighting
them, if you do this, they turn to face you in the
new direction, and you can back them up into pits,
blades, etc. the fat guard is tough indeed, but not as touch
as the blue guards there is one in about level 4 or 5,
he drove me nuts, but then eventually i figured out
you could back him up into a pit also. this is truly a
classic game still one of the best ever, and i would
love to see some more like this with the same intelligence
simplicity and complexity and ability to control and
acutally play the character great great game

Yeh, ur memory is quite good! It has 12 levels with 2 parts of the twelth stage. Actually the toughest guy in the game is the first guard in the 8th Stage. The skeleton in 3rd stage needs a trick but the 8th Stage guy is the toughest. Actually there are many tricks to kill the enemies, it only depends how you end the game.!

gregor
18-06-2005, 06:50 AM
which one on the 8th?
Anyway a lot of times you can trick them into turning arround when you are blow them, then you use the sneaky walk key (shift key), you pass them in sneak mode and then when you climb up they first have to turn arround to see you which gives you enogh time to draw the swrod and maybe even give a touche.

I ve played prince of persia when i was young i remember how i defeated the fat guy it was hard but i remember when i atack him and hit him he was thiner LOL really!!!When i hit him he was thiner and thiner unless i ve killed him.And those skeletons are invincible u can kill them only if u throw them in a pit.I ve even meet with my shadow when the way was stuck with a miror u ve must to run and jump into the miror and then were u re shadow. If u killed the shadow u died i ve stucked there i remember.

Yes that blue guard in level 8 is a nasty one, he never
backs up, really have to work on him...and the skeeletonn
is awful too, yes, you must push him in pit,...but just wait
until Prince of Persia 2, now there is a NASTY skeleton
waiting for you there, you will see....
enjoy this classic...it is still one of the very best.

My record was 19 minutes after playing about 20 times hA-ha. I started playing when you had to do from 5.25" floppies.

Seeing you all talking so much about it I have re-start (or tried to) it and would you believe it I have forgotten how to use the sword, tried Enter, Ctrl, Alt, Space (pause)?

The fat guard can be drawn towards you if you close up then withdraw slowly then jump the gap...the idiot tries to follow you and falls to his death (hopefully) never waited to verify it. You can do the same thing with the Vizier at the end.

Ah, found it! Moreby pressing random buttons than anything, but if it works, it works. I'll also include other commands for the sake of reference.
Esc pauses the game (pretty obvious, but whatever)
Ctrl-G saves the game
Ctrl-L loads the saved game. However, if you die on the level you saved you have to do this copyright-check level thing where you have to choose a letter on page so-and-so of the manual. I usually find just reloading the game works better. That way, you haven't lost any more time.
Ctrl-A restarts the level, and
Ctrl-Q quits the game.

I'm on level 8 so far, just for the record. The fat guy in level 6 is teh pwn, and the ending of that level is extremely cool. Level 7 took awhile, but I managed. My favourite part was making the first enemy get chopped up in the slicer thing. Ah, the gore...

when you are still below him use shift+direction key and sneak pas him. that way he won't turn arround and you can later sneak up behind him. all in all it will give you just about enough time to draw the sword before he turns arround.

Thornwood

Couldn't have put it better myself. I tend to stop just short of where he is and walk into the next screen. It sometimes makes you fight him in the middle of both screens, but you can still back up some.

no codes. you have 1 our to complete the game or princess get's it!

@Marianna

You can't really kill him, but you can get him out of the way.
Here is how you do it:

When you first fight him, you push him to the right side of the screen untill he falls off. Then you climb down (on the same side). You will see the skeleton down there again. This time you fight him and push him to the left side of the screen untill he reaches the pit (the hole) and falls into it. After that all you need to do is jump over that hole and go to the exit doors.

Hello! I'm back again. Still stuck on level 8, partly because I stopped playing it for a while, then had to work my way back to where I left off once I got back home.
It's interesting how different the sounds are on this computer. Before they were like beeper sounds (albeit much better done than any others I'd heard before, but now they're crisp and clean and I can change the volume to boot :ok:. I must have downloaded a different version before.

I seem to be having the hardest time with the first enemy I come across in level 8. I think it's because his fighting technique is about standing his ground and patiently waiting for you to make the first move. Then he slices and dices you.

It's most frustrating when you don't have the manual and have to restart the game every time you die on a level you've saved at. But I'm getting impaled less often, now that I'm refining my technique and choosing not to press Shift before Up. He suffered a glorious defeat onve when I got him to fall on the spikes . The main reason I like levels 7 and 8 is you get to kill certain guards in satisfyingly gruesome ways. Bring on the pixellated gore! :Titan:

((Aside note to Master MC: :bye: Hello! John Dowland rocks my socks, too. It's great to see I'm not the only one who's heard of him.))

you have 2 choices for those...

1. you can either wait for him to strike and when he does do a tempo attack and hit him before he hits you.

2. you attack him and immediatelly push up to parry his repost and then shift again to hit him.

actually the one ones i found difficult to beat is the fat guy on level 6 and the end boss, which is easier to defeat then fat guy if you switch the fighting position fast enough. :sneaky:

Personally I think the toughest opponent is the one Thornwood mentioned. He's also the most fun. I always liked fighting him with all kind of restrictions, like parrying only, dodge only, etc. :P

Buttonbash shift-up enough and the fat guy'll give you no trouble.
As for Jafar, play it right and you barely need to fight him at all ;)

And guest, I'll take a look at it ASAP :)

Hi, I'm an old fan of Prince Of Persia. I've played POP since I was a child and know many things about this game. However, reading this thread I have discovered two new things and I have two questions for people that are able to respond me:

1) Some month ago a person wrote here that there was a bug in this game able to complete the game in 14 minutes or less. I want absolutely reproduce this bug.
I have read somewhere (out of this board) that after the game is completed without any saved game, restarting the game another time, after you have completed level 1, strangely, instead of level 2 the game warps you directly to jaffar, with about 50-52 minutes left.
I think that the bug described above is connected to the bug discussed here. How can I reproduce this bug that save me much time?

2) A person, always in this thread, has linked a page where the level 7 is being finished in about 20 seconds. I've tried too many times but the trick seems to be unable to work. Maybe there is someone other able to apply this trick?

Of course, I don't want to use any cheat available for prince (starting prince with "prince megahit", etc, etc).

Well I've playing the game since it first came out on 5.25" floppy. I don't want to jump to Jaffar after the first level. I like to enjoy and have fun all the way long. I remember finishing it with 19 minutes to spare...well I loved it that way. No bugs or cheats for me :D :bye:

hello!
I think you are probably right about that level 7 trick. When I used to play this game even I tried that trick but it actually never worked and I think that it is something picture editing trick. but i don't know.

my best time happens to be 27 minutes and without cheating I think, everyone is gonna take atleast this much of time. the game play requires it, you may argue that you can do tricks but I am confident that at least 25 minutes of playing the game is necessary in any condition.

Ok, wish I could help you, but I simply can't. I don't know.

As for the guard, you really need to lure him out by doing one of those blocks that flow into attacks. For the rest buttonbashing still helps. Quick successions of attacks and blocks. The guy does have a counterattack which really is lightning fast and pretty much unblockable, but he rarely uses it.
He's the most difficult opponent in the game, but easily beatable once you get the hang of it. Playing with him and defeating him using multiple techniques is actually one of my favorite pasttimes in the game :D

Both good games - agreed, though I think PoP2 relies on the storyline much more than PoP (which is a good thing imo) - but the combat system.....You'll never get into those lengthy sword-battles in PoP2, like the one with the fat guy, or the lvl 8 def guard in PoP, where just a single exchance can take several seconds.....

Not that many shortcuts as far as I remember, except for the spectacular one in what-was-it-again where you jump down, hang onto a ledge, drop and the entire level is finished. Now that was a time saver!

I can happilly say that I killed the crud out of the 8th level and got to the 9th a few days ago. I found out a system to beat the 8th lvl guard and the fat guy.
Fat guy - just block and strike until he is exhausted and gets killed.
8th lvl guard - hold shift + step forward, then quickly block and strike. Works every time.
Stuck however on 9th level - nowhere to go, tried everywhere...

level 9? that's a tricky one. if i remember you go left, up, right then up and then left. and watch those green potions. don't drink them. one of them turns you upside down :not_ok:

but lemme check...

edit: i couldn't find the right solution in my quicky. but since if you go left there is nothing that would open the door. instead of going immediatelly left, try moving still up when you reach that guard on the top right corner. maybe there is something there. i can't remember exactly...

Correct me if I'm wrong - but isn't lvl 9 the one were you have to get help from the little mouse (he opens the gate for you when you're haning from the ledge) - or is that one lvl 8?

Concerning the PoP/PoP2 - I have now replayed PoP2, and I think I know what I meant with the inferior combat system. It is basicly the same, but it feels like the prince reacts a little slower in PoP2 (it has nothing to do with the speed of the game or the machine it runs on) - it may be imaginary, but it sure does feel like that...

Definitely, I don't think it's imagination... I've felt the same way about the way prince moves, especially a combination of running, then jumping: he seems to react a lot slower than in PoP 1.

Sorry; I had you confused with one of the people that could not get past the level 9. The mouse on level 8 was a very pleasant surprise.

I am so glad someone mentioned the save game command. By dint of loading in cheat mode, upping the time left, resaving and then reloading in normal mode, I have finally gotten to level twelve with uncramped fingers and enough time to make more than a token attempt at completing the level before the time runs out. Once I have done each level, I can try to finish the game in an hour.

The nice thing about the combat system for PoP is that it is fast and keeps in the spirit games time limit. Another good reason for the simplistic combat model is that, though combat is often unavoidable and there is the final fight with the Jaffar, combat is not the most important aspect of the game.

I remember getting to the point with the mouse, after days of perfecting my running and jumping and then getting stuck there. I'd always turn around and see if there was something I could do different and the blade would kill me after I messed around for a while. Finally in frustration I gave up and put the game away for years.

Then I found it on an abandonware site, deicded to give it another go, but this time I used a faq to help and what'dya know! You're supposed to just chill at the gate for a second and you're released by a helpfull rodent! So that's why she sent it off in the cut screen. Not as satisfying as finding it out myself, but at least I was able to eventually finish the game.

Yes it is a very nice feature (Jordan mechner - :kosta: ). And I agree, that combat isn't the primary thing in PoP - which is another argument in the PoP vs. PoP2 discussion - with the slower fighting system in PoP2, fighting becomes (partly due to the level design) fighting becomes a larger part of the game than it was in PoP.....

Definitely, I don't think it's imagination... I've felt the same way about the way prince moves, especially a combination of running, then jumping: he seems to react a lot slower than in PoP 1.
That's true. PoP2 requires you to be more precise with your jumps etc. At first it was difficult, but I've adjusted and now I hardly misjump.

It's a very nice feature (again, Jordan Mechner - :kosta: )

I discovered the trick, when I had just made the jump, hanging on the ledge - and my friend asked me something - I held SHIFT, and answered him, and when I looked back at the screen - hey, the gate was lifting :D

In the room with the exit, there is a ledge on the right hand side. The slab over the pressure plate that opens the gate on the left side of the room will fall if you walk on it. You may also be able to drop down to the ledge on the left, from above, but I have not tried it, you have been warned.
I finally tried to drop down to that ledge on level 9, from above. I died, so the rest of you have been warned. I also discovered an amusing bug that lets you finish the game in less than ten minutes. If you reload a saved game, but fail to win and start a new game, the second level is replaced with the level that the saved game started at. If you reloaded level twelve and run out of time, the next game is really quick. Facing Jeffar with only four points of life was daunting. I have since finished the game twice within the alloted hour. There is still some exploring I want to do on level ten, but have yet to figure out how to do it.

did you drop or fall down? otherwise you need to walk over those ties so they open the door which you would need later on.

you can do it by using cheats ;)

I very carefully dropped just far enough to kill me (one level is safe, two levels causes a point of damage, three levels kills you dead.

I was very disappointed to get through that gate after the two chompers on level ten, only to find that there was nothing worth finding, or did I miss something?

Out of curiosity, has anyone successfully cheated his way past the mirror image, on level six? I seriously doubt that anything is there, but stranger things have happened.

As far as I remember, there's nothing particularly interesting in level ten (green or major potions) and yeah, going past the two chompers is a waste of time. This is in fact one of the quickest and easiest levels in the game, a breeze compared to the three previous ones.

I'm afraid I've never gotten past the mirror image in level six.
Btw, I wonder wether it's possible or not to get the major potion in level 5 before the "ghost" does it?

I cannot. The tile that you stand on to climb up to the level with the potion also opens the gate that the reflection runs through. YMMV, but I doubt that anyone else can, either. This may be the "plot point" that explains why rejoining your reflection on level 12 is the same as drinking one of those potions.

I came so close to finishing the game in under forty minutes, but my game went to pieces, once I got to level 12. I kept missing my jumps, and my reflection killed me before I sheathed my sword.

That guard on level 8 is either hit or miss, for me. I either kill him without a scratch, or my fingers never quite execute the forward-parry-lunge combination. Although not as difficult to kill, the fat guard on level six is the most fun to fight. I can get into a nice parry-lunge-repeat groove, where the clashing swords ring out and the blades flash back and forth for a few seconds, before a touch is scored. I am almost sorry if the fight ends too quickly. Jeffar is almost as cinematic to kill as the fat guard.

I find it advantageous to be very close to enemies during swordfights, once you've hit the foe you'll get to hit again without any likelihood of his parrying if you do it immediately afterwards. If you're not close, the enemy is out of reach for the second hit once he's stepped back after the first one.

I've just replayed this after the sequel (PoP2) and in the latter swordfights are not only much more numerous, but also much more difficult! Every foe in PoP seemed to me like piece of cake after having just played PoP2.

I should be so lucky. I can, sometimes, get in a pair of hits; however, as my speed style of play does not allow for swordplay mistakes, I am too timid in my fighting. The only big health potion that I bother to get is the one on level four. By the time I have gotten it, the closed gate barring the way to the rest of the level is open, despite my knowing precisely how it is done.

My time for the first seven levels is about eighteen minutes, and it can take me as little as twenty more to finish the game (best game yet is 21 minutes, 31 seconds, remaining).

Once I master getting in close, I should be able to slice another four minutes off my time. I have no idea how the fellow claiming to do it in fifteen minutes accomplished that feat.

gregor

Level 11or something like that (the oen that is again in the fancy palace surrounding). you can just smash down one of the tile from the above and then you can run on the top over the guard (no need to fight and time the jump) till the very end. then you go down open the doors and continue. it's saves a lot of time.

Dude, this is the firs game I ever played on a Computer, on my Mac Quadra 94.. Men, it was scary as hell to see those fiery teeth gates go clank clank clank...
Anyway, to go through lvl 1 without picking up the sword, you must make the first enemy follow you as long as you can left, then go up and high as you can, then go right and down again.. If you have done everything right, you will fall at the back of the first guard, who will turn and start following you again in his slow attack-stance walk. Open the lvl door and you are on lvl 2. WITH A SWORD. Yeah, i know, it's kinda cheaty to pass it like that.. But hey, time is running out.

I don't agree. Sometimes all you want is to see the story of the game unravel. I mean, if you're playing pitfall on the Atari 2600, yeah, don't cheat. There's no story. It's a game of skill. Trust me, getting to the end of story-less games of pitfall is not what it's about. However, getting to see how the game end without investing hundreds of hours of play time is more than worth it to me. Espceally since now, as I get older, I find myself with less and less time to invest in playing games. So I "cheat" or get a walk-thru and just run though the game but seeing all the important stuff. Hey, I'm happy with it.

Did you guys know that you don't have to go all the way to the sword in the first level? You can easly pass the gaurd without it and in the next level you'll have to sword with you.

First lure him to the screen you came from, nearly to the wall. Climb that wall and go to the next screen to the left. There are some falling tiles on the cilling. Break them and return to the starting point. Now you can fall throught the hole and escape toward the exit.(right side) If the gaurd isn't in far enough to the left you wont be able to escape, he'll kill you before you'll make it.

you press the jump = up + left (or right)
you press and hold shift

you have to learn it because in some levels tiles will fall down on you and you will have to press shift to hold on to the ledge.

to practice try stepping all the way to the ledge turn arround and press down+shift. now as long as you hold shif (grab) you won't fall down. once you release it you fall. if you press up he will climb back up again.

get closer and when you see they attack press up.
if you are real close and you move sometimes the guards seem to miss too.
the guy in level 8 is hard to pass and just lot easier to put him on the spikes.

and i wonder if it saves time if you pause the game when you pass trough an exit and wait for the music to end and then continue. might save a little time trough the whole game.

when using cheats you can scout the level using u (1 screen up) j ( 1 screen right) h (1 screen left) n (1 screen down) if you check behind the gate in lvl 6 you see there is nothing.

Not that there'd be some more spike pits.... :whistling:

Well, you can jump while you are running. Pushing -> or <- and ^ with it.
You can jump when you are standing, up and forward that is. Pressing up and up plus a direction respectively.

You may need to know that you can do single steps by holding shift and push a direction.

Happy trying! :ok:

2. Special tactic against 8 level guard. Put your sabre down. He make a step forward to you.
Then very fast attack the enemy. Then again and again. Easy, huh.

It's so long that I played but I believe InsaneFury is right. Hold on to the ledge, also you can take slow steps to the edge and then jump...remember always it's safer to keep your left finger on the CTRL key :).

Try refreshing the page. This game is downloadable from here.

Unless you mean Prince of Persia 2, which we were forbidden to distribute.

You need to use DosBox (Download (http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/dosbox/DOSBox0.65-win32-installer.exe?download)) to run Prince of Persia.
Here (http://www.abandonia.com/main.php?nav=index&FAQ=1) is a manual how to use it.

Have fun! :ok:

Great!! (-:

I used to play this game a lot (like i guess most of you guys did too), altough i never thought i could finish it in one hour. With a little practice and some scouting the levels, i just did it in 45 minutes!! (-:

BTW, in the highscore it says how many minutes you've got left, not how much you used. I think it's possible to be _a lot_ faster than 45 minutes, but maybe some of the people who posted here they finished the game _in_ 15 to 20 minutes just qoute the highscore, and mean 40 to 45 minutes.

And i wondered how that piece of animation was recorded. I know how to make screenshots in dosbox, but is there a way to capture Prince's movement into an avi or something? That would rule!

Ctrl+Alt+F5 to start filming, the same key combo again when you're done, it's in the Readme. :) If you've got trouble watcing the result install the codec which comes along with DOSBox itself.

I doubt you can download it direct to XP, but it can be downloaded and put it in your Games File. I can play it on XP's Dos prompt...but it's much faster. Better to use DOSBox :).

Great!! Sorry i missed it; i was running DosBox 0.63, which doesn't yet have that feature. This is gonna be tons of fun!!

I should have had a feature like that back in the days when i got called every now and then by buddies who wondered how i get past level bla or how i solved puzzle bla. (-:

That avatar's great...the final fight with the evil Vizier :).
And Guest you can only save soon as you enter level 3, then at the start of each level. If you try saving in the middle it just won't work...it'll always start at the beginning! :(.

Oh, the joy!

Just downloaded the game. I played it before (the game was one of the "heritage games" that my father left to me :) ) , but one thing stopped me from fully enjoying it... My version had "The *scream* legal copy varification level!"

There was a bunch of potions and 3 tries. You were left on your luck to find the right potion to continue to level 2!

But this is perfect...Once again i bow to abandonia :)

[/b]

I don't know how to type in the command line. What is the command line? I have this game downloaded on a PC laptop and when I click on it to play, the game just comes up. HELP!

Assuming you are running some version of windows, go to the 'Start' button, then choose 'run'.
In that command line, type the correct directory where you have prince, but finish with "Prince megahit" instead of prince.exe or prince.bat
Click 'ok' to run the command line.

Cheats eh! When will you chaps learn to enjoy a game for its own sake, for the fun of discovering yourself, for maybe losing a bit but the joy of discovery and the satisfaction that you did it all by yourself. Asking for some guidance if stuck the first time you play, yes :). BUT CHEAT, NO NO NEVER :(!

Well, consider I highly agree with you: now, say I've played the game all the way through without cheats since I was young, and merely use the cheats now to explore different levels at their finest without the fear of time limits or having taken me forever to get there or of constanly being killed and having to start over again! I say once you've played the game all the way through before, it's fun to mess around a little with the cheats. :)

Oh, one other thing; didn't there used to be captions that would appear throughout the game at the bottom? Besides how much time you have left and all that, I could have honestly sworn that every time the prince died, the word "AAAARGHHH!" would appear at the bottom. And remember there was a phrase at the end of level four after he jumped through the mirror, but I can't remember what it was, just that it had the word "behind" in it.

No, I'll swear it, it's true! I played it through DOS on a 1990 IBM computer! There used to be captions, even my mom remembers it.

Captions! What captions at least I am not aware of any?
I have played the game again and again beating my own time and discovering shortcuts or newer places for extra lives without cheats :). You are entitled to your views but no thanks NO cheats for me. I'll miss all the fun if I cheat...I don't even know what cheats to use. They are sometimes suggested here but I don't even try to remember them!

Peace!!!

Captions: "AARGH!" when the prince died
and then something about A S S in the fourth level after he jumped through the mirror.

It seems you are trying to run the game in plain Windows. I strongly suggest you use DosBox (http://dosbox.sourceforge.net) instead.
You can download it here (http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/download.php?main=1).

You might want to check out the official DosBox FAQ (http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php), and particularly this part of it. (http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php?page=Basic+Setup+and+Installation+of+Dos Box) It is quite helpful for users unfamiliar with DosBox.

I played PoP with both PC speaker and Soundblaster. Playing with Sound Blaster the prince shouted like "AAARRRRGH" when you fell so deep that you would die. But I don't know any text.
