I'm feeling kind of stupid here, but I just don't know how to do it anymore...

I finished the game with my warrior on the normal difficulty level, and now I want to play again on nightmare level. How do I do it?

After I kill Diablo, I get the movie at the end, after which it says THE END. If I then click, I'm in the characters menu. If I choose my warrior, I get the options load and new game. But when I choose new game, I'm at the start of normal level again... I cannot choose the difficulty level...a bug??

is there an options button? not sure, never played the first one.

It's not in options.

I did this like ten years ago and I'm not sure whether I remember correctly. But once you kill Diablo, the next time you choose "new game" with that character, you should be able to choose among "normal" and "nightmare", and when you killed Diablo on nightmare, you should be able to choose "hell". But it's not there!

(O, and check out the first Diablo if you have a chance, I like it way better than the sequel!)

Don't know always played multiplayer game (even alone), there you could choose what you want every time you start.

Interesting. I found a prog with which you can edit the difficulty level in game, and the read me file says the following:

Difficulty Editor for Diablo 1.07
=================================
Thanks for downloading and trying this program!
What this does is allow you to change the difficulty setting of the current game at any time.*

Now you can play Nightmare and Hell skilled Single Player games without having to use the MP to SP bug!

So in single player you never were able to play nightmare/hell difficulty levels other than through "cheating"???

There is no such bug in the hellfire expansion.

Get Hellfire. I did, and it rocks. Not only you get 8 new levels in two types (Nest and Demon Crypt, entered from the town), a bucketload of new uniques and a few extra prefixes/suffixes and a horde of monsters (though some just re-use obsolete animation files that were left in the game by Blizzard) as well as three new characters (Monk plus two hidden ones - Bard and Barbarian) but you can also select difficulty level like in multiplayer. :ok:

It must be already, judging from availability of it. I checked everywhere, but it must be so rare, it's not even on eBay.

I "found" it at a friends house and asked if I could borrow it, they never saw it again.

Judging by how scarce it is I suppose they thought that the expansion wasn't that "great" signaled them to stop producing more copies.

I wanted to burrow it from a friend who I know had it, but he said he lent it to someone and never saw it again! Is your name Micheal??

HELLo!
Unless there is something like this SP->MP bug there isn't really a chance of playing Nightmare or Hell difficulty. These are only for MP charakters, which is quite annoying since you get some really cool items in SP. If you want to play in higher difficulty you must choose to play a multiplayer char. After reaching Lvl 20 you can enter Nightmare, after reaching Lvl 30 you can go to hell, regardless of having killed the Dark Lord or not.
Perhaps you confused it with Diablo 2, where you need to kill Diablo first and then may enter Nightmare and after that Hell, this time regardless of Charlevel (even though I don't think you could enter Nightmare before lvl 25 *g*)

It was a proper expansion pack, surely. IIRC there's a Diablo 2 mod trying to recreate D:Hellfire in the D2 engine somewhere about.

You know what, I also installed Diablo 2 once again, but (even though I loved it at the time it came out) it just sucks so bad...deleted it again after 10 minutes. Today I just despise the Diablo sequel.

But for some reason, I can play Diablo again and again. I just love it.

Maybe because it is so simple. When I come home from university or a day in the library or whatever, I don't always need some absorbing RPG with tons of dialogue and taking notes and searching through maps and stuff. It's so relaxing to just walk through a dungeon like in a state of trance and make those succubi moan with my Merciless Flail of Slaying. :D Sometimes not having to think is a blessing.

Today I bought HELLFIRE at eBay. :w00t: (Boy did it cost me... )

Ok, so now I have Hellfire. How can I import my old characters from Diablo? They are not there when I start Hellfire. Apparently, the savegames have different file names, Diablo .sv and Hellfire .hsv.

Can I just copy the savegames into the Hellfire folder and change their names?

Can anyone help me on this?

Well, maybe "import" is not the right term (I'm not a native speaker of English).

What I mean is: I have finished the Diablo game with all characters. Took quite some time. Now I installed the add-on, partly for the reason that it allows to play the additional difficulty levels "nightmare" and "hell". So I wanna play on with my original characters on the new diff. levels. I'm sure as heck not gonna start a new character in Hellfire just for that.

So: what can I do?

I didn't encounter problems while reading your post.
I meant that I don't know if you can proceed to Hellfire withe original Char.

When I was playing Hellfire I played with new char.

Maybe you should try to google for converter. :ok:

Too tired to check to link, but as far as i know, you need only change the extension of the savegame from the D1(.sv, as you mentioned) to .hsv.Also if i remember correctly you CANNOT revert back from hsv to sv.
My memory could be failing though so be sure to backup your savegames, just in case

Best of luck :ok:

if it's anything like Diablo 2 there's a few files for each character, for things like the map, equipment and stats - just have a hunt around.

My advice is not to use spoilers when you actually give money for the game.
After an hour or two of spoiling you will just regret that you bought a game. :not_ok:

There are programmes for transferring items between characters. So I will just transfer items to my character which I actually found myself. So it's not really cheating. ;)

The Fifth Horseman
27-04-2005, 10:26 AM
Well, in Hellfire you lose all items - but not gold, so what I do is selling the items and keeping $$$ to buy equipment after the transfer. Do that, then copy the save into hellfire directory and you're set. I don't recall whether you need to change the extension into HSV or not.

Also, in Hellfire there are two "hidden" characters. You have to create a command.txt file and put in it line that says "bardtest barbariantest". However, barbariantest will not work on Hellfire version 1.00, you need v1.01 patch.
Bardtest - Bard, uses Rogue graphics, has Identify ability.
Barbariantest - Barbarian. Uses Warrior graphics. Max magic 0, 255 Strength and really high max Vitality (like 140). Can use two-handed weapons as one-handed.

And of course the Monk...

Omuletzu

Here you are:
"multitest bardtest cowquest theotest barbariantest"
Copy this text into a command.txt file within the game folder

Just aquired the basic game, and would like to ask some questions:
- there really is no difficutly-setting for single-player mode? Not even under 1.09 (the latest patch)? Just read this in this topic
- is there a way to make the game redraw levels, refill levels with monsters in Single Player mode?
- what are the differences between the difficulty-settings?

- is there a way to make the game redraw levels, refill levels with monsters in Single Player mode?Yes. You can choose to start a new game with an existing character.
This will reset the game, but your character is carried over, along with everything in their spellbook and inventory.
- what are the differences between the difficulty-settings?
The monsters are tougher and give more XP. They may have additional resistances. Some of your spells are less powerful. Enemy spells may be more powerful, some enemies may also gain extra abilities. The levels of generated items are higher than on lower difficulties.

So basically the monsters are buffed? But there are no such things as the negative resistances in D2?

And I've just found a weapon with lots of +% dmg, but it seems the damage on the character-sheet do not involve this. Am I right?

The Fifth Horseman
03-03-2011, 07:42 PM
Yes, they are buffed. No negative resistances, but the monsters can become resistant to something they weren't to, or immune to something they were resistant to.

The damage on the character sheet should include this value, yes. What exactly are both the old and new weapons' stats?

Thx for all your answers.

Nevermind the question about the weapon, I forgot the extra dmg on one of them (unique weapons have damn annoying way to display statistics. This game is very annoying when you try to handle it - no running and so on).

Finished the game with the rogue. It was very easy, this is the cheesiest character in the game without abusing the newgame option with its unlimited ranged attack.

The warrior with its melee is very difficult, as he must go up almost after each and every enemy for a full heal on the later levels. Not to mention the yellow zombies what lower maximum hp with each hit...

The mage is an ok guy, but he MUST find a mana-fountain, or he runs out of mana pretty fast. And I would like not buying any potions.

Also there are heaps of frustrating, noinfo things in the game. Like there are shrines with "random" effects. They actually do a fixed effect, only their name is hidden.

I wonder if the "maximum" stats are ment to be "maximum hard points", "maximum hard points with potions", or "maximum hard points with item bonuses".

The quests are also told to be random. But it seems to me they instead related to character-classes.

The recharge staves ability of the mage in the end reaches 0 charges, and then the charged suffix disappears from the item. I bet the repair option of the warrior works similar way.

A nice little surprise was too that during the quest of Lazarus you can not leave his hideout. Fortunatelly I always have a townportal scroll on me.

One more thing: everyone told that the most important stat is AC. Well, I say AC has its use during the first half of the game, but after that resistance is what you'll need! Lightning monsters come first, but they aren't that terrible. The magic-damage succubies are much more dangerous, but I even more hate the fireball-tossing mages (who don't chase you the slightest)! I have no idea how the warrior can kill Diablo with all those buggers on his head too (and Diablo is the only being in the game who is - without charge - faster then the protagonist).

Note: the amount of items you can store in the city / on a map is limited. Pffffff.

Some more note:
- winning the game with the warrior meleeing is possible, the trickiest part is the last level. If you can make just alittle safe spot in a direction, you'll be abe to seek and hide. The trick with him killing Diablo is running around the last room to pull out the knights, then go close to the walls, run before an enterance, turn around the corner to prevent mages shooting you projectiles, then just bash Diablo to pieces. Requires some potions, unlike for the rogue, what kills 100% sure because of the hit recovery Diablo suffers from her bows.
- there IS a difference in the ending movie depending on the character (mage not finished yet). The face when the protagonist screams is different.
- the with's inventory seems to reload every time you enter the maze, unlike Gizwold and Wirt, who provide new stuff only after every leveling.
