Space Quest help

I'm new to abandonware and my DOS skills are beyond rusty. What do I need to do to get the Space Quest games to work on my WindowsXP computer?

SQ 1 & 2 work when I click on the icon, but the fonts are unreadable (except for the highlighted option on the menus).

The rest all require installation and I don't know what options to select for video, sound, and directories. I have no experience with DOSBox and I'm guessing this will solve my problem, but I'm not sure how to run it properly.

Any suggestions?

Data is the undisputed DOSbox master.

If you search for his name, you will see that he has included a DOSbox newbie guide as his signature.

But I will try to help you the best I can.

DOSbox is compatible with Soundblaster, so if you have that option... use it. Just remember to set the IRQ to 7.

As for the commands:

DOSbox opens in a window in the Z:\ prompt.
The first thing you do is:
Type: MOUNT C C:\
(There is no typing error, you must write the letter C twice).

You will then get a message saying that C:\ (Your harddisk) have been mounted.
So, go to that prompt by typing: C:

You will now be in the main directory of your harddisk (C:\).
Now you must locate the game.
(Use the Windows Explorer for this... notice all the subfolders that lead to the game you want to play).
Example:
C:\games\SQ1

Now you must open that folder in the DOSbox window. To do so you use the standard DOS command, cd (change directory).
For the first example above, the commands would be:
CD GAMES
(You will then be moved to C:\GAMES\)
CD SQ1
(You will now be where you want to be... C:\GAMES\SQ1\)

The only thing left to do now is to either run the game or install it. To do so, just type in the name of the file.

It's easy: download DosBox from this site, it's the newest version available at the moment. Start DosBox and type following at the prompt:
mount c c:/games/quest
c:
start the game with it's .exe file
where c:/games/quest is a directory of Space Quest, could be other of course.
When the game is too slow or too fast, you can adjust the speed with CTRL+F11 (slower) or CTRL+F12 (faster).
Try to find out more details for yourself, like editing dosbox.conf file, that could be sometimes necessary if some games don't start properly. But if you have more questions, just ask. :D

I believe you are reffering to InterruptReQuest.That means that you set the IRQ to 7 not ICQ :wink:
cd (create directory)
