Now i'm not going to lie: I love adventuregames. I don't mind if they are violent or peacefull, dark or happy, scary or funny... I love them. But sadly I think i've played all of the (recent) good ones and even some bad ones (Black Mirror had the worst voice acting ever, but I still liked the dark story and setting)
Now can anybody give me a title of a good (preferable recent, as in the last few years) adventuregame. With that I mean: not obvious titles like Grim Fandango or Myst IV) but games that may have gone by without attracting too much attention but is a good game nonetheless.
from the favourite-genre thread I see there is a big crowd of adventuregamers here (which I already knew) so i'm sure one of you could help me out.
Thanks,
Michael

Have you tried RAMA?
It's not that new, but it's an excelent game (based on the book Meeting with Rama by Arthur Charles Clarke).
They don't really do justice to this game at Mobygames (http://www.mobygames.com/game/dos/rama).
Oh and HERE (http://www.mobygames.com/game/dos/spycraft-the-great-game) is yet another great game.

I am not sure what is recent for you, but if you haven't already played them give the following a try ...
Zork Grand Inquisitor
Zork Nemesis
Broken Sword 1 + 2
Gabriel Knight series
Bladerunner
I particularly enjoyed Zork Grand Inquisitor - for me it was the kind of game you dream about people making - it is my personal perfect example of a 1st person adventure game. Not as desolate as the Myst games and not over-crowded with characters. Not too little and not too much - just right.
The snapping flowers bring back memories - aaah....

Oh by the way Stroggy,
You seem to be an adventure fanatic like me so I thought I would share something with you that works for me.
Seeing as adventure games (proper adventures not action/adventure type games) are a rare breed (almost extinct) these days - I have latched onto something new (at least for me) When I was suffering from adventure withdrawal I stumbled across something called INTERACTIVE FICTION (a.k.a. Text Adventures)
Now I am not sure if you have ever tried one, but I can honestly say its about the best thing you can get nowdays with regards to adventure seeing as 2d point and clicks are about dead.
There is a unique charm in Interactive Fiction - it may not have the graphics or a mouse driven interface like the normal adventure games you may be used to, but all the story, puzzles and emotions are there. In fact its the best of both worlds - a book + a game combined ...
All I can ask of you is to put away any doubts you have and to try just 2 games ... They happen to be the first 2 Interactive Fiction games I played and the 2 that got me so hocked that I honestly downloaded almost every text game I could find - I am not kidding either I hunted down almost every thing I could.
A great site for Interactive Fiction is http://www.wurb.com/if/index
But before you go there, go here : http://adamcadre.ac/if.html
Download all the games, but play the following two games before you touch anything else.
9:05 and I-0 (Interstate Zero)
After completing those 2 just try telling me that Interactive Fiction sucks - If you are a true adventure fanatic which its sounds like you are - I don't doubt that you will be hooked for life.
I particularly loved Interstate Zero.
Trust me play those 2 games and any strange opinion you might have will be blown out of this galaxy :max:
And let your mind wonder if you know what I mean "wink wink." Interstate Zero is such a text masterpiece.
These are probablyt obvious, but I'll name them anyway.
Siberia 1 & 2
Longest journey
Runaway
Broken sword 1, 2 & 3
Monkey Island 1, 2, 3 & 4
Simon the Sorcerer 1 & 2
Gabriel Knight 1, 2 & 3
Sam and Max
Day of the Tentacle
Feeble files
Full throttle
The dig
...
You've probably already played these, but since It's impossible to tell what you consider obvious...
Stroggy
02-04-2005, 03:09 PM
Well I've already played all of the mentioned games (including the text adventures, you've got good taste Charmed) except for Grand Inquisitor which i bought but refuses to work. Thanks anyway :)

Stroggy you must find some way to play Zork Grand Inquisitor. If you have to install Win98 on a machine just to play it - then do it! If you have to give your little toe away - do it.
Zork GI is one of those must play adventure games. Like I said in an earlier post - Zork GI is the pinnacle for first person adventures in my opinion.
It also ranks as one of my top 5 adventure games of all time.
YOU MUST FIND A WAY TO PLAY IT!

Have you played Discworld Noir or Nightlong?
You could also try Atlantis 1 and 2.
Not my absolute favourites - but when you need an adventure ...

I borrowed Atlantis 1 many years ago and played it then and I have Atlantis 2

Bad Mojo, it's a good adventure, where you play as a roach, it's very weird, the graphics are not cartoony, it's an actual roach that moves through photorealistic backgrounds, I don't know if this game is famous or not, but it's OK, IMO...
The game dates back from 96' but they decided to make a remake last year, I'm not sure if many things have changed...

Try yesterday's update: Alien Incident. Besides that one, there's the two Syberia games, which're already mentioned. If not for those, try Tonight The Shrieking Corpses Bleed (http://members.aol.com/magickpoultry/corpse.htm) or Caitlyn's Destiny (http://www.corbydesigns.com/dir/Caitlyns_Destiny.zip). Other than those, you can still browse The Crow's Nest (http://trumgottist.com/crowsnest/). Especially look for the Apprentice games on there :ok:

It works perfectly on my XP machine, even at normal speed (unlike Zork Nemesis, which scrolls too fast). Took me a long time to find a copy of that game, which I believed to be an oldschool point & click adventure, just with digitized graphics. To my dismay it turned out to be a MYST style game, something I don't like in the least.

Just Adventure (http://www.justadventure.com/) Stroggy, this looks like an interesting site for adventure game lovers.
Here's a newer adventure game you might not have heard about: Aura Fate of The Ages (http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=8177881158&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT) It's listed in the action, adventure section of Ebay but it's not an action game.
Oo-oh, here's a much better site for Aura FOTA. It's the official one: http://www.auragame.com/us/index.html
The Crystal Key sounds good, too. It's a sci\fi adventure. You'll probably find out something about it on the Just Adventure site (above) and about its sequel: Crystal Key 2. http://www.justadventure.com/Upcoming_Rele...rystalKey2.shtm (http://www.justadventure.com/Upcoming_Releases/CrystalKey2/CrystalKey2.shtm)
Unfortunately the screenshots make it appear a bit too Myst-like for me.
These games are by the same company that released Aura and they're currently working on a few new releases. So the adventure genre is far from dead. However the charm and 'cosiness' of the old DOS games can't seem to be recaptured in the sprawling 3D Windows games.

Well different strokes for different folks.
But then again what were you expecting :bleh: You are a nameless and faceless adventurer... 3rd person point 'n click wouldn't quite work out don't you think ;p
I hope you at least played the game through to the end. I personally wouldn't bash it for being similar in style to Myst. If anything Myst is giving it a bad name. Like I said earlier, it's unlike Myst in the fact that you are not some utterly alone adventure on an island devoid of habitants. There are great puzzles (logical) unlike Myst. There is humour and very memorable characters.
If you haven't played Z:GI just because it plays from the same book as Myst (i.e. First person perspective) then you are missing out on one of the best first person adventures let alone one of the best adventures of all time.
I have played the game at least a dozen times over the years - I still can't fault it for anything.
One of my all time favourites :kosta:

Popular as in what? Full Throttle didn't sell very well at all.

Try to find Blackstone chronicles...It is very hard game, and unlike others is based on psychological terror.(you are in sanatorium of very MAD therapeut(and your father btw..) that is full of ghosts of pacients that DONT survive his attempts to "cure" them)
Dreadlord
03-04-2005, 07:07 PM
In Sanitarium you play a man with amnesia, he wakes up in a Sanitarium after having the brakes on his car slashed, where he falls of a cliff :ok: . You basicly take form of all the things he begins to remember, you play a chapter where you're his sister and you have to go through a circus stranded on a flooded island to kill a squid boy or such, or one where you play a four armed superhero, it's really wack.
But it's a good dark creepy game. One thing though, the storyline is so damn hard to understand.

"Beneath a Steel Sky" and "I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream," though IHNMAIMS is stil for sale it quite well done and well worth what money you may spend on it.
*edit* Then again, I am a fan of I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream. Sanitarium is great and you can pick it up as shovelware now, so no need for a silly CD rip. If you like the AGS engine (I know I do) 5 Days, 7 Days, and Enclosure are all good.

Wish I could share your optimism, I am NOT pleased with the idea of some quarterstaffswinging Amazony April, but I guess we'll see.
I don't believe anyone mentioned shadow of memories, which I thought was pretty good, if rather short. If you want something dark microids make a lot which I think are rather creepy (for example Post Mortem and Jack the Ripper), and have a dark mood about them, but I'm not sure that's what you mean :)

The Longest Journey is a great game, but the puzzles were a bit on the simple side (Except for a stupid puzzle in the beginning). It felt more like an interactive book, but a good one :max:

Sorry to say that by Action, we adventurers mean To Fight/combat, which is none in Broken Sword 3. All you need is some quick reflexes to overcome the arcade sequences and they are not too many, just 3~4 sequences. And I forgot to mention before, Good Keyboard skills. :)

hmm.. what do you mean? I haven't got them in one day or one week or one month or one year - I collected them as and when they were released and played them instantly.
Do you know how many adventure games release at average in a year? I think, not more than 12~15 games (except the years 1995, 1996, 1997). So, 15 is not a huge number of games to play and end in 1 year.
I can play and finish almost 10 games in a month. I even replay some old titles if I have nothing else to play (I even lost count of replaying Quest for Glory 5: Dragon Fire.)
Anyway, happy adventuring!
