View Full Version : What's Wrong With Homm 4?

I used to play HOMM 3 with my brother all the time and I recently found HOMM 4 in a bargain bin. I've tried it out and so far I have to say I like it. But when I read reviews and listen to peoples comment about it, I seldom read anything positive. So my question is: What's so bad about HOMM 4 ?

HOMM = Heroes of Migth and Magic

I liked it too, but most of my friends who i used to play hotseat with stuck to HoMM3 - I think they couldn't be bothered to get used to the ways it was slightly different to the earlier ones. It's not just you that likes it though!

HOMM 4 is a very good game, as a stand alone. But if you take into account that it's the sequel to HOMM 3, then it's a very poor game. For instance i didn't like the fact that it borrowed to concept of building your army from Disciples.

How does that necessarily make it a very poor game? Especially since all the concepts in the HOMM series came from other games, published earlier?

It's worst in gameplay than it's predecessor, i mean come on, don't you sense it??
And it really saddened me to see that they STOLE game concepts from Disciples...

But i don't want to flame anybody, although i am in the mood..., so i'll stop here, this is just my opinion

Have fun

i found HoMM4 bad because of....

i don't know really..... i just LOVE HoMM3 so much compared to this game

i guess HoMM3 earnt my love and HoMM4 is trying to use that love to get into my life without effort LOL

i love the graphics in HoMM3... the semi-alright 3d graphics of HoMM4 made me a bit sad :eeeeeh:

The point's already been made: While HOMM 4 might not be a bad game in its own right, it just plain sucks in comparision to HOMM 3 (I even bought all four add-ons... should give you an idea of how much I loved that game... ).

Why does it suck? What's better in HOMM 3? (Apart from the music and the fact that there are more towns in HOMM 3  )

Well, HOMM 3 is better balanced, graphics are better for it's time, it's got all that fancy shiz dealing with it's unit system, but HOMM 4 just let out with bugs and confusing interface probs.

More towns, units, items...

Graphics look much better (not just for that time, this pseudo-rendering in HOMM4 just plain sucks) and are more practical as well (iso is not really the way to go here)

Better balanced (more tactical depth, especially when including the add-ons)

better music

better controls

Better "overall-feeling"... HOMM4 just looks and feels so clinical. I love style of HOMM3. It might not look realistic at all, but it's just vibrant with all those colours, little animations etc... while HOMM4 tries to recapture that, it fails miserably. It just doesn't feel right... like a CGI-remake of the Muppet Show wouldn't feel right.

Well, HOMM 3 is better balanced

Ahem-Archangels-ahem
In Homm4 they put the Homan system on head.
Strange graphics(It really dont PASS in HOMM serie),
they allowed to fight with heroes(another major flaw.Heroes were in HOMM there for SUPPORT large army of monsters and not to slay them  )
Unbalance
Few playable monsters
Copied concepts from Disciplies(OK this wasnt that bad, but this copied system was WORSE than original. If you are going to steal something, make it at least better  )
Etc....
I dont think HOMM 4 is bad game.I just dont see it as part of HOMM serie...

In what way is it unbalanced?

Chuck the plant
31-03-2005, 08:17 PM
In what way?

Hmmm... how about "one way teleporters all around your town and enemy heroes constantly popping out of them"?

Good side is better than evil(again)
War is absolutly
Maybe I am just shitty player of HOMM 4 (i admit I dont played it for very long time) But I think the Life,Order and Nature are WAY overpowered

That was the way nealy every campaign-mission went... you ride away from your town, an enemy hero pops out of nowhere and attacks. Because normally there were one-way-teleporters right by your town.

I find it's useful to horde archers upon archers.

They usually die off from the stronger monsters, but they can take down any melee units.

Do you have the expansions?
It is much more balanced in expansions IMO, archangels are quite more expensive, but I think Castle is overated anyway, the units are normal, nothing special, except crusaders and archangels which get expensive as hell(5000 gold + 2 gems)...

I haven't played HoMM IV, but what I've heard of from my friends, and a review(budget) of the game, it's what all you guys have said, a good standalone, but just not Heroes...

Though I remember it being announced as 'revolutionary' and the very fist reviews of the games were, that it is great, but I guess that's a little bribing...

I played Heroes 3 for about two years and then pasted to Heroes 4.
I admit that in the beginning it was kind of repulsive, but when I got used to it was perfect. :w00t:
So my chice would be HOMM 4. :ok:

archers.... so many archers....

in HOMM3 all i used is ranged where possible, with the Golden Bow (i think... the one that allows you to shoot without penalty) i destroy all

i go for Tower because i love Ranged and Magic

Anyway back to HOMM 4. Judging by the comments there isn't really anything wrong with HOMM 4, it's just that it isn't HOMM 3 :max:

MOO 3 on the other hand sucked so bad compared to MOO 2 that I got huuuuuuge hickies just playing it.

MOO = Master of Orion

the biggest difference between heroes 4 and previous installments is that you don't need heroes to travel groups of monsters + that heroes are not longer standing in the back to watch over the playfield but activily take up the sword, when your hero get's killed you have to raise him in a town...

those 2 above facts I don't like, and add to that that without the patches the game is unplayable because of memory leaks... 2 thumbs down really... :not_ok: :not_ok:

Maybe I played too much heroes and just got tired of it...

Listen, this is the thing, This problem happens to all of a good seriers. HOMAM- is very good idea of system of the game, we can say first of homam kind, and this system was interesting to many people, but there was one thing that had gone with this great game and it was drawing (2D), non bad 3D graphinc drawing, FOR ME ITS THE SAME THING WITH MONKEY ISLAND 3 to MONKEY ISLAND 4. I thing that good 2D graphic drawing can`t compare with early 3D drawing, I don`t say that there shouldn`t be any but not in early developing 3D time in point-click adventures, and in HEROES we were used to nice 2D not some 3D graphic, do you agree? By the way there`s a nice comic of THE SECRET OF MONKEY ISLAND drawed by the same technique like the CURSE OF MONKEY ISLAND, it`s really nice, you should see him, but there`s only 46 pages, the autor is lazy, i think it`sw nice piece of work, here MI comic site (http://www.worldofmi.com/features/comics/vink)

HOMM 4 isn't 3D. It doesn't even pretend to be 3D. The only difference is the "camera angle".

I don't think there are that many new features.

I prefer Age of Wonders - Shadow Magic before HOMM, but HOMM 4 was ok. I had more fun with HOMM 3, but I think that's because the whole concept of HOMM felt fresh at the time.

As for HoMM3, I got the complete edition real cheap, so I thought I'd give it a try... Well, had I played it 10 years ago, I might have been impressed, but playing it now is just... boring. It plays like King's Bounty, just with more stuff all over the map...
