:wall: :wall: I want to create few .iso files and to compress them so that they occupy less space.

I was wondering if you can help me to find the best compression program.

HELP! :wall: :wall:

You know there are better compression programs than WinRAR but they are slower, and they are not supported with winRAR, so only people that have those programs could unpack the files.
You get what I mean?!

The best you can get for free is 7-zip.

Couple of my friends changed from zip and rar to 7-zip and have saved huge amount of space.

The best thing about the 7-zip software is off course its pricing :) (as compared to WinZIP, -ACE or -RAR) but the compression of the 7zip format is also excellent.

Check this site for a comparison (http://stuff.techwhack.com/archives/2003/12/14/winzip-vs-winrar-vs-open-source/) in compression, between zip, rar and 7zip

What about Power Archiver?

I heard it's better than WinZip and WinRar, but which one is better - Power Archiver or 7-zip?

*resists going into an essay about old archivers, like .lha, .lzx, .ace, .xpk, etc *

dont forget in winrar and other programs, you can select the LEVEL of compression..
maximum compression in rar is pretty good, and dont forget you can split a large archive into as many parts as you like, to fit on cd-rs etc.

New version of WinRar support to uncompress 7-Zip, if I'm not mistaken.

Not sure about Power Archiver, I know that 7-Zip become standard for games in rom format for emulators. For example, with merge tool friend of mine archived all his pokemon roms (more then 2 GB of GBA roms) in to an 18MB archive.

But took him over 2 hours to do this. Again, over 2 GB more room on his HD, and this was his first use of 7-zip.

roms are always great at compressing. i dont think you'd get 20gb into 18mb if it was mp3's or jpgs ;)

It's not 20GB, it was 2GB. Those roms were verty simillar, so that's why compress ratio was so great. If you have simillar songs, then you'll have nice compress ratio too.

If 7-zip is so good (can't comment.. i haven't tried it) are the abandonia archives compressed using it.

7-zip files can be uncompressed by winzip etc...

i know the MAME team get people telling them to change the compression of the ROMS for mame to 7zip, and they reply that its only like 5-10% better (or something) and it would mean everyone would need an unzipper that could handle 7zip. its not really an acceptable trade-off!

It will take some time and effort to have 7-zip on many computers. You can compare it with IE and FireFox. Even FireFox is much better, not everyone is using it, is it?

For my own needs I am using 7-Zip, but when sending stuff to others, I use Zip, as I know that most of them never heard of 7-Zip.

A bunch of sites I go to now are slowly starting to use 7-Zip I've noticed, it's slowly growing, but as long as I have winrar on my comp, I'll be fine.
