This is the Challenge:
Complete Deus Ex 1 without killing ANYONE. (Animals do not count) This means that you cannot kill the head boss either.

Koen
21-03-2005, 05:43 PM
Hehe this is totally impossible, because in one mission, you have to take out 3 robots... And of course all the end bosses (Simons, Anna, The Boss, and that strange mech-like person, etc)... Nah... I'm nog gonna do this...

Yobor
21-03-2005, 05:46 PM
By mech like person, do you mean Gunther?

No robots do not count. Also, using Killswitch words does not count either, as you are not killing them, the stupid mechanism in them is.

Koen
21-03-2005, 05:50 PM
Yeah! Gunther I meant! Heck... I played it 3 times and still don't know the name

And what if you let an animal eat a person? Is that considered killing? :sneaky:

Yobor
21-03-2005, 05:56 PM
Nope, that is not killing, cause you didn't do it
Like when Navarre tries to kill Lebedev that is ok if he dies becuase you didn't do it.

Koen
21-03-2005, 06:06 PM
And like the MJ12 prison department, or whatever it's called, where those 2 monsters are locked near where Paul is? hehe... I imagine let them follow me all the way through the building, eating everyone!

Jim6
21-03-2005, 06:07 PM
You won't be able to get past Walton Simons - other than that, I'd say it's well possible - with the cloaking/speed mods

Yobor
21-03-2005, 06:11 PM
See, the way you kill him is lay LAMs. That way, he kills himself when he walks into them. He should have been smarter.

Koen
21-03-2005, 06:13 PM
 Then you can kill, ehm... selfdestruct anyone with LAMs...

Yobor
21-03-2005, 06:15 PM
Yes. Except where are you going to find the 1000 odd LAMs for killing everyone in the game?

Sean
21-03-2005, 06:21 PM
*Cough*Spawn Cheats*Cough*

Jim6
21-03-2005, 06:33 PM
That's ridiculous! You can't just LAM everyone!

Now that I think of it; there's a big monster in that room - but I think it'd attack you and not Simons...

Yobor
21-03-2005, 07:17 PM
But no, you can LAM everyone if you have enough LAMs!

Just remember, it has to be set on proximity mode, not just thrown mode.

Danny252
21-03-2005, 07:21 PM
LOL this all sounds extremely crazy
so if one were to fire a bullet and the enemy happened to be in the way and therefore got himself killed, would that count? ^^

Yobor
21-03-2005, 07:34 PM
Nice try Spammy Longstockings, but it would count.

Jim6
29-03-2005, 12:54 AM
Well, I've just found http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0286585/board/nest/11541675]this, which means you *can* get past Simons - meaning that this is possible.

I'd do it, but I'm only just after finishing it again... :(

So... Deus Ex, anyone?

The Levitating Nun

I tried this once, got past Simons too using tranqs until he passed out :D Didn't try any further so I might give it a go.

DeathDude
29-03-2005, 02:39 PM
I tried to cloak and use speed augs to get past simons, it worked for awhile before he spotted me, I try to avoid him whenever I can, plus you get a much better conversation with him if you leave him at the oceanlab and when you arrive at area 51.

Dreadlord
29-03-2005, 06:35 PM
I played this entire game through by shooting every single human being in the head.

Havell
29-03-2005, 06:36 PM
That's one way of doing it, and a mildly fun way of doing it too.

Dreadlord

You see, you got be at master level with Rifles, then you aim and go pow, either that or you use your pistol, I liked to stab people in the craniums too.

And in the game too? :sneaky:

Dreadlord
29-03-2005, 06:49 PM
What? You can do that seriously, you stab them in the head, and they make a really weird noise and fall down, sometimes they turn around and shoot me, then I stab them again, and they start to run, then I run after them because they're really slow, and stab them in the back.

Sometimes I stab them because of their bad AI, they stand there for a moment and say "I saw someone" then I go up and stab them.

It's fun really.

DeathDude
29-03-2005, 07:23 PM
Ah the famous death scream in Deus Ex, classic stuff.

Dreadlord
29-03-2005, 07:29 PM
It's somewhat of a combination of a choke, snarl, scream, and whimper, with a little dash of trying not to piss one's pants.

DeathDude
29-03-2005, 07:32 PM
LOL Yeah I think that about sums it up.

I never played it, whats bad about it?

DeathDude
30-03-2005, 07:57 PM
From what I heard, because I never played it was that the interface wasn't that great, it essentially looked like a port of the x-box version, which angered pc users, the story wasn't as deep as Deus Ex, and from some of the reading that I've done I agree.

Koen
30-03-2005, 09:16 PM
About Deus Ex 2

I never played it, whats bad about it?

Well, first, you can't use stealth anymore. It's just shooting around most of the time. Second, levels are small, so many (long) loading times. Third, there is only one ammo for every weapon. So if you don't have sniper ammo anymore, you also don't have pistol ammo anymore, because they share the same ammo. Fourth, seperated damage is gone. So you can't be hit in the leg or something anymore. Headshots don't work anymore. Fifth, it had many bugs, like going to desktop while loading, not playing any sound etc. It's a huge fallback if you look at the first episode. The only thing that's left is the story (you will meet chars from part 1), and the possibility to play it multiple ways (but after playing it once, I didn't want to play it a second time).

BeefontheBone
30-03-2005, 11:16 PM
That's what happens when a console game is moved to PC in today's marketplace - so much for "Xbox games won't do that 'cos it's basically a tiny PC in a box..."

DeathDude
31-03-2005, 12:46 AM
Yeah I still wonder why the game even got on the x-box, must have been Edios doing I suppose, I always imagine that the next x-box will have like a preloaded windows one day, heh heh.

DreadLord, does dying include letting yourself be captured by Gunther? If it doesn't, then I have completed the game (Gunther is literally unkillable at this point, I tried. Even LAWing him in the head at master Heavy Weapons for over 10k damage did not finish him off).

I also had a little experiment involving seeing if I could kill no-one and just knock them out/killswitch them. The stopped at the 747 when I decided to kill Anna, but started again after that interlude.

Even if I play as a killer, I let the door guy at UNATCO live (although I knock him out) because he's a very nice guy.

Did you know - MiBs DO NOT explode if you knock them out? Which means that once unconscious, they will never explode. If you did, then sorry.

Another point - In Hong Kong, did you know that in the Lucky Money when you meet the Triad leaders for wine, you can't kill Gordon Quick but you can kill the other guy (might be the other way around, I forget).

Oh and Deus Ex: Invisible war is sh!t. Don't buy it, it removed all of the cool stuff from Deus Ex, for example leaning and different kinds of ammunition. Yep, it all comes out of a big ammo pool, which is rubbish. Oh, I just picked up an automatic rifle clip! I'll fire off a GEP gun with one of these!

DeathDude
31-03-2005, 01:08 PM
Yeah I'm pretty sure I read that you can kill Gordan Quick from the Luminous path, but you can't kill Max Chan.

PrejudiceSucks
31-03-2005, 03:41 PM
*sighs* oh well...

btw have any of you found a non-harmful way to get rid of the prostitutes in Hong Kong? The only way that I could find was to knock them out. If you kill them the Militiary Police start fight with you, and you don't want that.

Koen
31-03-2005, 04:48 PM
Aaaah... of course! Knocking down isn't killing! :sneaky:

Dreadlord

Make them unconcious and hack them with a combat knife or crowbar until the body explodes, I've done this to unconcious troopers while their friends were around, and they didn't seem to mind.

DeathDude
31-03-2005, 05:22 PM
Yes they seem oblivious to you when that happens, I tried knifing them when they were on the ground, never got them to explode though, at least with the knife.

Dreadlord
31-03-2005, 05:23 PM
It takes awhile, just be patient, try entertaining yourself by trying to put the blood in places that'll make it ever more of a mess.

DeathDude
31-03-2005, 05:26 PM
LOL gotta try that then,

Looking back this seems a bit sick.

Also, I just quoted myself!

Another smart thing to do is go into the ladies' room in the main headquarters on Liberty Island, then shoot the lady in the stall with a gun.

Why, I don't know

DeathDude
31-03-2005, 05:36 PM
Yeah it maybe went a little too far on what you said, but whatever, it's worse in other games like Soldier of Fortune, where the gore is just overused.

Personally I always like going back to the Lucky Money Club, when the MJ12 Commandos go in and start randomly shooting at people, as long as you stay in the club, you shouldn't be attacked by the police and such.

Dreadlord

What are your favourite weapons anyway? I just loved the assault shotgun.

Dreadlord
31-03-2005, 06:15 PM
Uh, Sniper Rifle, can't remember it's proper name, something funky.

DeathDude
31-03-2005, 06:16 PM
For me either Sniper Rifle or Assault Gun, but I also love the dragon tooth sword, it rocks :ok:

Dreadlord

I like the crowbar too, just becasue it's a crowbar.

DeathDude
31-03-2005, 06:48 PM
Heh now I remembered something I also like throwing things like plants at the guards at UNATCO, always get a chuckle from their responses.

Dreadlord

PrejudiceSucks
31-03-2005, 08:20 PM
My favourite weapon is a Sniper Rifle which I mod out to the gills. Like literally all of mods og on it. By the end of the game it had less recoil than the starter pistol, a larger clip than a stealth pistol, was silenced, had a lasersight and was 100% accurate. WOOHOOO!

It got so powerful due to skill up grades that it could snipe alarms off the wall (very helpful, and silent as the grave).

LOL I liked the running gag about Sharron (the girl in the toilets). If you walk past her the second time you go to UNATCO she's like 'stop following me!'. Genius.

The Assault gun is lame, but the Sawn-Off is good (I like the way it looks) and the Stealth Pistol was good.

DeathDude
31-03-2005, 08:21 PM
Stealth is pretty good when you need to be quiet, on a side note, anyone play any of the mods like Zodiac? Redsun? Cassandra Project? etc...

Dreadlord
31-03-2005, 08:22 PM
There were mods? Ooooh...

PrejudiceSucks
31-03-2005, 08:26 PM
I played the Cassandra Project, that was good, and a little of Zodiac, bt then I got bored. The Cassandra Complex (its real title) actually added more weapons etc. to the game and was great. It even had a 'pimp gun' hidden behind a door that had to be cheated open. It fired prostitutes :D.

Oh, other favourite weapon - the Baton. One space for a whole world of hurt. Gas Grenades were good also.

DeathDude
31-03-2005, 08:26 PM
Want some links? Just going to take me a sec to find some.

Zodiac is prob the best.

Dreadlord
31-03-2005, 08:28 PM

DeathDude
31-03-2005, 08:32 PM
Whatever works best for ya.

Didn't like the Cassandra Project, bummer they only did one part and gave up there are 2 more still in production though.

The Nameless Mod and Unatco Born (Looking forward to this one, this mod will let you play as JC but on the side of UNATCO against Paul and Tracer and whanot.)

Dreadlord
31-03-2005, 08:34 PM
Pshaw, heresy.

They need to make a mod where you can kill anyone you wanted to kill from the game that you weren't able to kill.

DeathDude
31-03-2005, 08:35 PM
That'd be cool, technically if you do some searching around, you can change some of the options in the game, that make certain characters invulnerable, it's in one of the files, but then you might have probs later on.

Dreadlord
31-03-2005, 08:38 PM

Dreadlord

The most fun thing in Deus Ex is experiminting and killing.

DeathDude
01-04-2005, 02:11 AM
Fooling around in Deus Ex is fun, especially with the "great" AI there is, it's fun stuff, I always like to save and reign havoc on a level at times, then reload and do the mission again, fun stuff, plus I'm still finding things that I've missed after every game.

Koen
02-04-2005, 02:00 PM
What game would come nearest to Deus Ex?

DeathDude
02-04-2005, 02:33 PM
If I had to make a guess it' prob be System Shock 2, it does have a sort of skill based system, the missions are interesting and such.

BeefontheBone
03-04-2005, 01:45 PM
SS2 is great - not got it going on XP yet though :( It doesn't allow so much freedom as Deus Ex in terms of approach though, and definitely not in terms of running around dealing with enemies in a comedy manner.

Dreadlord
03-04-2005, 04:54 PM
What do you mean? I ran around with all my stats upped hitting robots and hybrids with a wrench.

I also ran in with heavy weapons and used a pistol instead.

PrejudiceSucks
08-04-2005, 07:57 PM
Whoever said that Sharron needs to be killed, you can have your wish!

When you are escaping UNATCO you can talk to her (handy, she sells scramble grenades) and then smash her to death with the weapon that does the least damage in your inventory (usually knife, crowbars suck as they are double the space of the baton for less damage) or indeed spawn loads of gas grenades and lob them all day long at her and she screams in pain

BWAHAHAHA

Or you can do as I did, which is kill no-one in the UNATCO HQ other than Manderly. I kill Anna on the jet, you see. (I plant a LAM next to the door that goes into Mendelev's cabin hehe)

Oh by the way there are two different cut-scenes on the death of Manderly! The first is if you kill him after you hear him and Simons talking and the other is if you kill him before (Thanks for doing our dirty work... 'I thought you'd like the guy, a real hard-behind'... No, on the contrary, he was too soft for us. *ends message*).

What I want to do is edit the game files so that you can kill Simons the first time you see him. That would be a bit bloody useful (fire a LAW into the room him and Manderly are in after mission 2 by opensesameing it!). I really hated having to take him on when he had his mods active. On the other hand, a LAW to the head does something like 2500 damage or something ridiculous. That would be perfect.

That and missing out on the Supertanker mission and having a lot more in Hong Kong (the best missions of the game are there and I like the city itself).

DeathDude
08-04-2005, 08:43 PM
Hong Kong missions are fun, it's just the voice overs for the level are autrocious imo.

Yobor
08-04-2005, 08:48 PM
Yes, the entire game is great, but sometimes the voice acting gets on my nerves.
Personally, my favorite area is France. I like the NSF because they look cool :-)

DeathDude
08-04-2005, 10:10 PM
I agree the NSF have got some smooth looking costumes, very cool stuff, it'd would have been nice if there had been a choice if JC could've stayed loyal to UNATCO, change up the game a bit, oh well hopefully when the mod UNATCO Born comes out, whenever that will be, we'll get the chance for that.

PrejudiceSucks
10-04-2005, 11:33 AM
Personally I think it all goes downhill after hongkong (barring that Sub Pen of whatever it is, 2nd last mission).

Paris is alright, although there are a quite frankly ridiculous amount of bots there and most of the people in that mission are annoying/armed, which is a shame.

I loved the missions in NYC too.

But the Supertanker was the pits... euch... it taekes ages to get anywhere, there are few enemy soldiers and the objectives are tedious... plus the sub pen you start in is boring and there isn't that much good for the plot either.

But there you are.

What was the challenge to start off with btw?

Yobor
10-04-2005, 02:29 PM
I would appreciate it if you actually read the thread!
The challenge was to go through the entire game and not kill anyone.

I've tried both, they're both OK.

I also tried an amusing version where, bar the first mission, I created a horde of those spitting creatures off the top of building by spawning them. They then proceeded to eat everyone on the map.

Handy on that mission where you take out the warehouse :D

PrejudiceSucks
29-05-2005, 11:22 AM
Oh by the way the challenge is just ludicrously difficult due to the sheer rarity of tranq. darts, which are just about the only thing that reliably knock people out.

If we can cheat then it's fine, otherwise it's pointless.

Frist press the "talk" key then backspace the word "talk", you are then left with the console, type:

Set DeusEx.JCDentonMale bCheatsEnabled True.

to enable the cheats, the do the same only type:

spawnmass xxxx ## (where xxxx is an ingame item and ## is a number)

It's hard. It makes you drop your modded weapons. You cry.

Absolutely correct. The only drag is that it is very big. You might be better off with a baton and some LAMs, if they dont count,

PrejudiceSucks
04-06-2005, 07:59 AM
Nope, one weapon only. It's very, very difficult, since you have to get a weapon which can take many different types of ammunition, just so that you can keep firing it.

I did it for about five levels and then I got bored of it in Hong Kong.

Oh by the way lockpicks and multitools are not technically weapons. Not is the spy drone.

But you won't want to play as soon as you get out of Hong Kong, it gets wearing to say the least.

omg
04-06-2005, 02:37 PM
1 weopen only, no cheats, well depends on difficulty level, problems with dragons tooth are 1: flame thrower dudes will muller you. 2: robots. if i had to choose a single weopen
, eek i dunno, i was thinking sniper but rof is slow an ammo can be hard to get at times.
if you could have lams as well i reckon i could do it with dragons tooth, if not then mb a combat shotgun. (u can kill bots with em but it takes a loooot of shots)

PrejudiceSucks
05-06-2005, 09:36 AM
You can swap your weapons, it's just that you're only allowed to carry one at one time. So if you know there were robots coming you could drop the sword and pick up an SMG with a grenade launcher (or whatever) and blow them up, drop it and then continue on with the Dragon's tooth.

Also, with no cheats you won't get the Dragon's Tooth until Hong Kong. This method of play really just shows you how much damage turrets can do, how useful computer skills are and most of all how important stealth is.

I am under some deliboration over whether the 'allskillpoints' cheat should be allowed. I think that it would make it a LOT fairer to all of us if it was. No other cheats though.

26-09-2005, 02:29 PM
There is a guy on the Planet Deus Ex forums who's playing through the game with no weapons at all. Don't know how he's doing though..

I just started replaying through the game yesterday on the PC, as I've only played the game on the PS2 in the past. Got through liberty island without killing anyone but as soon as I was in Battery Park I started cleansweaping the place :P

PrejudiceSucks
25-10-2005, 10:35 AM
You can play it without weapons, and providing that your Computer and Swimming skills are really high it might not be too hard. It's still a tall order though. It'd actually get easier as the game went on, I think. More turrets around.

Still... I think they'll be using lockpicks a lot and unless you drop them from a great height they're not easy to smash.

Personally, I just going around killing anyone I choose. The government's paid billions for me and no-one's getting my way!

That said, I didn't kill any NSF troopers, I knocked them all out. MJ12 got butchered, though. As did everyone other than Scott who worked for UNATCO. He was quality, everyone else I killed.

And Anna bought it as soon as I could kill her. I shot her in the face with my sniper rifle in the plane and she died straight away. Then I spared Lebedev.
