Hi there,
I am fairly new to the abandonware scene and was hoping some of you guys could give me recomendations on really worthwhile olddies to try out.
I have been reading on various sites and there seems to be some kind of "rabid-dog" following with regards to a certain game called X-COM. Would this be a place to start at? :kosta:
Basically any game you guys feel is worth going back to, even now in the year 2005.
What are your timeless games :ok:
I don't think I could possibly give you a list of all the abandonware games that are worth playing, since there are a LOT, and I myself haven't played anywhere near all of them. It also depends what kind of games you're into. Personally, I prefer adventure games, so I'd recommend browsing that category of games on this site and read some reviews. If you're not into adventure games, just select another category that suits you better. You're sure to find something that will appeal to you.
But yeah, X-com is an excellent game, that you should definitely try out.

I will get the first X-Com, the review sounds good. I just hope its not too difficult to get into. Would you recommend getting a hint guide or something or just try to figure out the controls etc. by yourself?
Any reason why I should not get the sequel's or remakes?
Flop, I am mostly into adventure games, puzzle and rpg's. Any must plays in those genre's.
Just to clarify, if you didn't know already. The first x-com is called ufo: enemy unknown on this site (I believe that was the European title), and the manual is available for download as well, so figuring out how to play it should be easy.
Also, I don't think the sequels are that bad, they're just not quite as good. Terror from the deep is almost the same, and sometimes the tactical combat could take ages. After trying to hunt down the last remaining, hiding alien on a cruise ship you'll understand...
I don't know much about puzzle games, but with regards to adventure and rpg games that are available on this site, I'd recommend:
Adventure:
Beneath a Steel Sky
Companions of Xanth
Conquests of the Longbow
Indiana Jones (both)
Laura Bow (both)
Police Quest series
Rpg:
Bloodnet (more of an adventure game, really, IMO)
Darklands
Superhero League of Hoboken (again, more of an adventure game)
Ultima 6, 7 and 7 part 2
Ultima Underworld (both)
There are many other good ones but these are my favourites. I'm sure others would disagree that these are the best, so I can only recommend that you read the reviews and maybe some comments in the forums, and decide which you find the most interesting.

U should easily get into UFO (XCOM) its not really complicated. PM me if u find any difficulties. Dont get the sequel coz its really hard if u havent played the first one.And i really think that the first one is better.
For RPG id guess the Final Fantasy on the site is a good choice not as good as the other FFs but still a highly enjoyable game.

I'd recommend the following...
Dune 2 (RTS)
Sword of the Samurai (RPG-ish)
Civilization 2 (Strategy)
One Must Fall (Fighting)
Princess Maker 2 (beats me)
Syndicate (Strategy, I guess)
Red Baron (flight simulator, WWI)
C&C: Tiberium Dawn (RTS)
Moonstone (beats me too)
Wasteland (RPG-ish)
There's a lot of great games here... :kosta: at Abandonia.

I haven't tried it... Is it similar to Sword of the Samurai? In that case, I'll try it.
