View Full Version : Populous - The Beginning [GOG]
One of my favorite oldies is Populous - The Beginning from Bullfrog. And still many players around who are playing it online using the matchmaker. :Brain:

I don't think even the general shape of the picture can be referenced to Populous in any ways. :bleh:

Let's get frank here, any game which take an awesome 2D concept like Populous and try to bring it to 3D will fail miserably if the goal is to try to make a game similar to the first.

Populous - The Beginning = Populous 3 :P
I played it a lot of times, and I even liked it so much that I made a map editor for it. It's so funny to see how good this game was for its time. Graphically, this game was perfect, and the gameplay was good too. So I got no bad words for this game. And the picture you see differs not so much from the original screenshot, except for the boat, the fish, and the tower...
Here a screenshot of the old populous:

They also made a reloaded mod:

Oh yeah, I guess you mean only 95% of the picture is irrevelant. My mistake! :bleh:

It looks like Empire Earth to me. My friend told me a few days ago that he had Populous 2 and after looking at Caesar 3 on my PC he told that is almost the same thing. Is that true?

It's somewhat simpler than empire earth, and you can run it on a 133 mhz machine... :sneaky:
I never played populous 2 so long, but I think ceasar 3 is a whole lot different than populous 2...

Totally different games in every respect. The Populous titles were RTS/action hybrids. Caesar III was the prototype used by Sierra (and various spinoffs since) for building sims: put a marketplace there, add a street and a temple over there, drop a bath and an aqueduct here--mind you link it to a series of underground pipes--and achieve the goals Caesar sets for this scenario. Then you'll be moved to a new province. Sound familiar? It was done as well for Egypt, Greece and China. They even did a recent 3D version, which was not successful, and showed zero creativity.

Borodin impressions had nothing do to with Tilted Mill (http://www.tiltedmill.com). The developer of children of the nile, which has many differences and is a very fun game.

I should have been clearer, but several of the development team that made the Impressions series spun off to make Tilted Mill. Chris Beatrice, the designer, was Project Leader on Pharoah, Supervising Designer on Cleopatra, Lead Designer on Zeus, etc. Mike Gingrich, Lead Programmer on Tilted Mill, was Directory of Technology on Pharaoh...it just goes on. ;)

i think later on settlers 3 tried to sort of step into populas territory ie the gods elements special powers etc. The different tribes.
There is now a free populas project (isnt there not for old games in the open source arena LOL) but what we need is an updated 2005 populas the return ?
Populous - The Beginning is certainly NOT abandonware, but its expansion (Undiscovered Worlds) isn't sold anymore...
Sound familiar? It was done as well for Egypt, Greece and China
And Pharaoh, and Zeus, and even more games... :P

Fans are making new populous games:

I looked about cos I really enjoyed Pop3. And I found this:
edit by data (full sounds like a warez)
If you download it, it has the patch for XP included, so that everyone can play it. Just run the popfix exe, the the game.
EDIT: Apologies. It had the fix in it, but it was the full game.
Please don't post warez link.
if it's a link to the fix feel free to repost it.

I'd really like a chance to play this game, can't seem to find it at any retailers and I've heard its no longer distributed. Abandonware? If so someone please link me to a download or upload it.

hi!
Sorry if this isn't the right place to do this, but this is my first post!
Anyone knows the name like this:
.kind of like a mix between black and white and diablo
.You played as a female soccerer, and could cast spells
.Your objective was to defeat an other soccerer
.It was also a management game, you had to grow your village, build barracs and stuff
.It was kind off in an old age but the characters didn't really seamed totaly human
.I remember the sorcerer had something like dreadlocks
.It should have been released 9 or 8 years ago..
Anyone?
Been looking for this a long time until it occoured me that my favourite site might know something about it!...
Thanks for the help in advance!
