600KB? That is a lot and I doubt you will get the other 40KB free.

how about freeing up memory in DOS under win 98? By the time i have loaded all my drivers it has gone down to around 550, and then some dos games refuse to run?

Set drivers to use upper memoty block instead of conventional.

This depends on what you mean by "under DOS". Back when I had Win98 I had a dual boot and I would recommend you do the same. You need to do some editing of the Config.sys and autoexec.bat files. Do some searching on the internet on how to set it up (cause I, for the life of me, don't recall how to do it).

I always had to use Boot disks to get games to run (mostly dos games that needed a lot of mem).
I used to use Quemm or something to manage my memory wonce I got Win95 and I didn't have to use boot disks anymore.

Eagle of Fire has posted a lot of stuff in Troubleshooting forum. You can get most of needed info right there.

I can get 610 :bleh:
My soundcard drivers take too much space. Before driverload: 590 kB, after driverload: 510 kB...

Dual Boot with Dos being the second system.
Autoexec with only soundcard drivers loaded.
No mouse driver/ Norton Commander loaded.
This made about 620-630 K for me way back when I still had my old PC and had trouble running Flashback.

You can create menu system where you create different configurations and different driver sets. This way you can for example disable CD (if not needed) to save couple more kb....
This is what I use to do.

If you're looking for a prog to do it for you, I used to use MaxMem (http://www.analogx.com/contents/download/system/maxmem.htm) by AnalogX. It's pretty good.
